XO Cafe Ratings and Reviews
My boyfriend and I came here for dinner before a show for his birthday. There was brown duct tape on his chair covering a hole of the booth cushion. For the price of the food, this place should be pristine. The waitress wasn’t bad, but wasn’t the best. She didn’t tell us about the specials (I overheard another waitress tell the table next to us about them), she brought us bread after our app came out. We got the tuna tartare to start. It was very small. Smaller than the waitress told us it was and she admitted it when she brought it to the table. I got the tuna and my boyfriend got the duck. Overall the food was overpriced for what you got. It was good, but wasn’t excellent. My cosmo was very sweet and and the espresso martini wasn’t anything special. Overall this place is meh at best. I probably wouldn’t go back considering there are better options in the Providence area.
We dined here few months back. I ordered the
burger medium cook, but because it was a very
big burger, I bit around it just to find out it was cooked rare after all. I complained to the manager who apologized and offered me another one, but my date (husband) already finished his food so I declined. The manager did not charge the burger .
So this time (7-29-2017) I decided to go back.
Ordered the same thing (burger) with now
cook to medium well. When I got the burger I cut it in half to see the middle of the burger, it was still oozing with a little blood so I asked the waitress if it can be cooked to just a little bit.
My burger took a long time to comeback (the place was not busy at all!). When I finally got my burger it was very well done, the burger was to hard to bite! I was then very hungry so I ate most of it. By then I had decided not to comeback to this place.
Always a favorite. Dinner before Waterfire with friends who had not been to XO before. They loved it. Tammy was our server and she was beyond fabulous. Great personality, friendly without being overly familiar. I had the scallops with sweet corn risotto. My wife tried the swordfish. We both loved out food. My wife said she avoids swordfish because it gets dry and tasteless but the XO version was cooked to perfection. A really good experience. And I love the artwork.
5 of us had Mother's Day Brunch at XO Cafe. The hostess sat us within minutes of arriving, and we were early for our reservation. Service was prompt and friendly. Menu was a bit limited but we all found something we liked. Portions were good sized, especially the french toast! Had some yummy cocktails too. Prices were reasonable, other than a burger I saw for $18. We didn't order one, but I saw one come through and it was huge, so maybe could feed two! We were visiting our RISD student so we will definitely return on another visit!
In a nutshell, food was good with appetizers being better than the entrees. However, the service ruined the dining experience.
The night started out ok with our waitress coming to take our drink orders. We put in orders for appetizers and entrees next, no problems there. The appetizers came out fairly quickly (maybe 20-25 minutes after ordering). However, the entrees took nearly 2 hours to be served!!! When we brought this to the attention of the servers, we were told "it's really really busy". However, we looked around and 5/10 tables were empty, and everyone else had already received their entrees. We asked AGAIN and the waitress told us that we ordered at 8pm when everyone else ordered so the kitchen was backed up. However, again, we noted that everyone else had their food.
Finally, after waiting almost 2 HOURS for our meals, a male server started bringing over our food. He was the only one who apologized for the delay in service. We finished our meals (I was told that the scallop dish was too salty, salmon was so-so, burger good, chicken good, and my dish (the meatloaf) was also so-so) and asked for the checks. By that time, we had already been there for almost 3 hours.
When we checked our bill, it was for the FULL AMOUNT. No discount for the wait, and of course, no dessert or other appetizers for our inconvenience. I would not recommend this restaurant, as the service was incredibly slow and completely unapologetic. Food was ok to good, but there are plenty of other places in Providence where you can get both good food and good service. I have never written a review like this before, but then again, have never had such a terrible dining experience.
I was recently at XO cafe for Sunday brunch having never been there before and it was amazing. The food was even better than I expected and the service was outstanding! My server Tammy was the most pleasant and helpful person I have ever seen at a restaurant! I would highly recommend this place to a friend it was a great experience.
While the overall experience was very good we were very disappointed by the Caesar salad we shared. The romaine was a bit limp, the dressing bland and even the anchovies were so mild they were tasteless. Our entrees were well prepared and our waitress was helpful and enthusiastic. I could recommend XO, but with limitations.
Brunch is just as good as dinner!
When you walk in for brunch on a Sunday, you'll see a range of people as eclectic as the food! From students in their pajamas to well dressed seniors and everything in-between, apparently this is the place for brunch in Providence!
Unique ingredients (lamb chorizo) and great cocktails make XO cafe as special for brunch as I've found over the years for dinner. My favorite restaurant in the city gave me another reason to stop in when I am passing through.
The food was amazing. Easily the best brunch I've ever had. (Had a party of 6 at 11:30am on a Sunday.) Perfect Bloody Mary's- even the complimentary ones you get for wearing PJs! The atmosphere was comfortable, modern and relaxing. The service was phenomenal. We will DEFINITELY be back.
We chose to spend our anniversary at XO Cafe. They made a special effort to ensure we had a wonderful time from the moment we sat down until we left. The food and drinks were magnificent. In any busy restaurant there are certain to be delays, the manager went above and beyond to make up for this. We can't wait to go back!
All in all, it was a very good dining experience. The dining room is a little quirky and a single restroom used by customers and staff was a bit of a pain. I liked the commitment to local ingredients. I went with the 3 course prix fixe menu, which our server said rotates weekly, and was reasonable at $34.95. There were some good options. Mushroom crostini and Flat Iron Steak with Chili Butter were both very good. Lavender Crème Brulee was tasty, but was more liquidy than I would have expected. Tortilla soup was tasty, but was served lukewarm at best. Sea Scallops were executed very well, as was the Chocolate Lava Cake (Life's Short... Dessert First). Beer menu was light on good craft beers, but there were definitely some interesting craft cocktails. Bar looks like it has good potential for people watching later at night.
I've been to XO a number of times in the past and was generally pleased. This dinner was disappointing. The entrees were overpriced and not particularly good. A number of options were not available. Service was slow. However, to their credit, the chef and server gave us a free bottle of wine even though we had not complained. So they did realize how poor the experience was.
My group was excited to do the Pajama Brunch (free mimosa/bloody if you wear PJs). We were sat early for our 11:45am reservation and the restaurant was able to accommodate our last minute change from a party of 6 to a party of 8. From there forward, brunch was a disaster. It took 35 minutes for all of us to receive our drinks. We only ordered entrees — No apps. After having been seated an hour no one had refilled our water glasses, no one asked about second rounds of drinks, and no one checked in with us to say why our food was taking so long. Most of the table had neglected finishing their first drinks because there was no food to eat them with, and no one wanted to have a full glass on an empty stomach.
We could see the kitchen working furiously, but it seemed like they just couldn't get the food out. At 1 hour and 15 minutes, someone who I assume was the manager (he didn't say) apologized for the wait and dropped off fresh brioche to hold us over. They didn't drop off enough for the whole table. The food did not come out at the same time: 3 dishes, then 3 dishes, then 2 dishes each separated by 5-7 minutes. By the time the last 2 guests received their dishes, the first group of 3 were nearly done. One guest is allergic to dairy, gluten and nuts, which we communicated. She was 1 of 3 omelettes ordered, but the server input the omelets incorrectly. We had to take 5 minutes to figure out which omelette she could eat, since none of them were correct. We were thankful that the food was hot and very good and that the bill was calculated correctly (not all of the drinks qualified for the special). Even when the check was dropped, there was no apology, no explanation, and no comps or discounts beyond the drinks that were already included in the PJ brunch. We left at 1:56pm so anxious to leave and get on with our day we forgot to take a picture of our PJ-clad group — All we wanted to do was get back to the hotel, change into clothes, and get on with the rest of our day.
