Xiomara on Melrose Ratings and Reviews
We had 30 people at a cocktail event on Sunset in WeHo and maid the last minute decision to take them all to dinner. This wasn't a flock of hipsters, it was corporate professionals who like nice food in a nice environment. Thanks to OpenTable, we found Xiomara relatively nearby and asked if they could accommodate a crowd at 8:15. I give their whole team, including Sigrid many, many compliments for not buckling under pressure and putting out a great family style dinner of palellal, salads, short ribs, and breadsticks which I am sure we're dipped in crack, they were so addictive.
All in all, a wonderful experience
There's something very special about the energy of Xiomara. It always FEELS so good to be there. I would go much more often if my (heavy travel) schedule allowed. Food, service, ambiance, prices -- all great. Among their many tasty dishes, Risotto with rock shrimp, wild mushroom, and truffle oil remains my fave.
Xiomara is an all time favorite of ours and we go there as many times as we possibly can.
Great ambiance, food and service.
Quiet and a great place to have a conversation and catch up with old friends or have a Romantic dinner. Truly a gem. Unique in every way with great cocktails as well.
If Xiomara the owner happens to be there make sure to chat with her..she is a beautiful and delightful lady.
My wife and I truly enjoy this restaurant. Xiomaras is a true LA gem. For starters, they have the best mojitos! We came back from Cuba a few weeks ago and we tried all types of mojitos. Nothing came close to Xiomara's mojitos. We have been coming here on and off for a few years. The food is consistantly good. I had the Churrasco and my wife had the Cuban Chicken. The dessert was delicious. I forget the name but it is similar to a molten cake. You need to order it 30 minutes ahead of time.
I am unwilling to endure excessive cacophony with fine cuisine! I will not conduct dinner conversations by text! Xiomara is such an welcome retreat from all this. The room is intimate, tho' the windowed walls are high, (there is a mezz/balcony that would be a swell private party spot & not too dark); I feel almost in a private dinning room. The jazz background music is just right; enough to hear but not intrude. The Bar is ample and clearly well stocked but attentive to the detail of finely muddled mojitos or a white sangria! The tables are napped with cloth, glass and cutlery. The waitstaff is attentive, informed and present but never intrusive or obsequious. This is a place to stop, breathe, linger, taste, connect and re-connect because the bowls and plates that arrive at your table are for savoring and sharing. (I'm particularly partial to the simply & utterly refreshing tomato gaspachio last night + the risotto...to be cross-table- shared with my friend's corn soup and pepper'd salmon. And they have a wine list that is complete, varied and not overpriced or daunting. I favor Spanish Albarinos and they have a very fairly priced one that suits me very much. This is a spot more should know...make it one to be your "quiet" discovery very soon.
While the service was attentive my rating is based mostly on the food. I remember the food at Xiomara's in Pasadena( many years ago) as outstanding and I was disappointed at Melrose. We ordered the prix dinner and maybe that was not the best choice. I was really looking forward to the mojito which turned out to be too sweet and the cane sugar did not seem to be fresh. Started with sweet potato croquettes which were tasty and had a bit of a bite from the chile sauce. The gazpacho was good and refreshing although a basic gazpacho. The salmon was decent but no flavor- except from the large peppercorns. We also tried the poblano risotto which was good though not a dish I would run back to eat. Dessert was either a trio of sorbet or ice cream and we got one of each. The caramel ice cream was good, nice burnt taste like a dulce de leche should have, the chocolate and vanilla were bland. He sorbets had the same issue the pineapple had the most flavor the other two were just Ok. I would expect a Latin restaurant of this caliber to have more vibrant flavors. I had high hopes which were not met.
We each chose options from the price fixe menu. My gazpacho soup was great and my friend's sweet potatoes were delicious. Both appetizers were spicy, but not excessively so and the portion size was right.
I had the chicken served over polenta and both were moist and flavorful. The chicken was tender -- cooked just right. There was also a refreshing radish salad on the plate -- a bit spicy and so a nice compliment to the chicken and polenta.
My friend had the salmon, again well cooked. The fish was moist and tender and the seasonings were great. She was very pleased with the meal and would definitely order it again. As with the chicken, the salmon was not heavily spiced but just enough to bring out great flavor.
Homemade ice cream for desert -- say no more! The ice cream was delicious and a perfect compliment to each meal. Well chosen finish for either of the two dishes we had!
The service was impeccable from start to finish. Our server was attentive but not hovering; he had that fine sense of timing to be there just at the right time. And, to not be there otherwise. Its rare and refreshing to find a server with such perfect sense for the job, and he enhanced the sense of a great evening. Five out of five stars for the server and staff.
I enjoyed Xioamara when it was in Pasadena, and it was good to rediscover the restaurant. The Mojitos are still fine, still made with fresh cane. The glasses still lean as they used to and the food is still very good. The ambiance and service is still excellent and I even enjoyed the bill, with its old fashioned nod to ladies and gentlemen. Thanks for a lovely evening.
The first time we dined at Xiomara, the food was wonderful, as was the service. Unfortunately, this time, although our waitress was a dream, the food was not up to that of the past experience. One of the dishes of the day was very good, the ropa vieja, but the hors d'oeuvre mushrooms on a crisp bread was drenched in oil and not crisp. The pork hash my friend didn't like at all, but the salmon another friend ordered looked good as was the black bean soup. The mojitos remain very good. Perhaps we will return if the chef uses less oil. The souffle and cioffees were yummy so we left moderately appeased. The restaurant is very pretty, and was quiet so we could talk with friends before going to theater. Don't know if we'll return, and can't recommend this restaurant to friends.
I had fun watching my dining guest try the Sweet Potato Croquettes for the first time. I thought he was going to pass out from pleasure. Now if only they would bring back the Mushroom & Burrata Crostini! Even without that, though, this spot is an absolute gem!! Service, atmosphere, food -- all delightful.
We discovered Xiomara after a recent move to the neighborhood. We booked on OpenTable after a quick search on Yelp that netted mostly high reviews and an attractive menu.
When we arrived for the reservation we were quite surprised to find three tables dining. Remaining optomistc we chalked it up to a slow night. Once seated the server greeted us and suggested the mojito to start out with. This happens to be the signature drink. All four in the party were less than impressed and agreed if the drink was any indication of what was to come we might consider getting the check before placing our dinner order. Instead we took most of the waiters menu suggestions when placing our orders.
The ceviche and nuevo cubano salad were both pleasant and the only reason I rated the food fair rather than poor. The steamed mussels, served in a citrus and wine broth, had good flavor but the portion was small. The sweet potato croquettes, not terrible but also not great (another signature item). Then there was the wild mushroom risotto, fried plantains and chino-cubano fried rice which put the nail in the coffin.
The fried plantains were not warm when served, leaving me to believe someone prepared them earlier in the day. The size of the serving also disappointed us, it appeared less than the equivalent of a full plantain. Both the chino-cubano fried rice and risotto lacked flavor and freshness. In fact, both were such a disappointment that it wouldn't be much of a surprise if they came from the frozen section of Pavilions located a few blocks away.
Love this restaurant! a perfect place for a drink or an intimate dinner-- the house made breads are best, the servers and bartender friendly and the setting perfect for a grown up dinner. Appreciate that conversation is not drowned out by a loud sound track. A hidden gem on Melrose!
My husband and I recently checked out Xiomara for a date night. We were delighted to find lots of great food plus a wonderful ambiance. I particularly enjoyed the vegetarian dishes - poblano risotto was super yummy, two veggie soup options were great, and we split a salad that was crisp and tasty. My husband had the rack of lamb and almost licked his plate clean. Would definitely come back!
First timer to Xiomara, and I must admit I fell in love with the place. Overall everything was excellent. Very intimate and serene. The food was well plated and the mojitos; of course were a delight! Definitely would recommend this beautiful place to the world!
Food was excellent, service top notch and unobtrusive, drinks esp the mango mojito out of this world. Standig menu items for our party of 7 included the ceviche and shrimp appetizer, pork hash, the lamb shank and the short rib. A great meal in a beautiful setting. We will be back!
A long time patron of Xiomara, my last visit was a disappointment. The small dining room, though tastefully decorated, doesn't work well with the happy hour folks talking loudly and laughing even more loudly at the bar. The deconstructed take on traditional arroz con pollo was more like a small plate than an entree. The service remains friendly and attentive, but the new menu, which seems to have raised prices and decreased portions, isn't working for me. We've eaten at Xiomara at least two dozen times. We probably won't go back.
On a crowded, hot summer Saturday night, Xiomara was cool, peaceful and serving excellent food to a small group of diners far from the see/be seen scene a few streets over. Why more people weren't eating here is a mystery to us. Every item we ordered was spot on--fresh ingredients, beautifully prepared, and delicious. Service was understated and well-paced; there was never a reason to worry. Highly recommended for a quiet, satisfying meal in a beautiful setting.
The restaurant was quiet. There were other patrons but it was fairly slow for a Saturday night. The server was extremely attentive, refilling our water constantly and checking in on us regularly. I had the pollo cubano and my friend had the pork hash. Both were good and just enough. They seem to be known for their mojitos but we didn't try them. The decor is classy.
For meeting up with someone in a nice place that I'm confident will give a good impression, I like Xiomara, especially when the focus is on having a quality visit together. No crazy scene, just a beautiful, comfortable space with a gorgeous energy about it, where you get delicious food, and excellent service.
I have been a fan of this restaurant for years. Being a former Pasadena resident, I have followed Xiomara from Pasadena to Melrose and have never been disappointed. The food is always delicious and outstanding and it is true the mojitos are the best in town !
I went for the Taste of Cuba prix fine menu special. Had the salad and Arroz con pollo, with their note-worthy mojitos. Everything was delicious!
The mojito was better than I last recall. The salad has really good flavor - avocado, tomatoes, etc. The chicken dish was not heavy and the chicken was quite juicy. It also came with fried plantains.
The meal was a steal... $20 for everything. We go there so often, we get emails about their specials.
This place is a must-try in my book!
Great food, excellent service, close to home - what is there not to like? Every time I have dined at Xiomara, the food has been consistently superb. I understand that all their food is prepared in-house, and stick to organic as much as possible. It shows.... or rather, it tastes accordingly. And, the services has been also excellent to match the food. Great place!
Xiomara has become one of our regular lunch spots for a reason -- or, rather, for several reasons -- including the flawless service, delightful ambiance, and everything we've ever tried from the menu! I may be running out of new ways to rave about this place, but I have yet to run out of enthusiasm for it. Love it!!
We came here for a birthday dinner. The food was marvelous (risottos are AMAZING); the waitstaff was attentive yet unobtrusive, allowing us a very leisurely evening. They even comped a dessert for the birthday girl, which they didn't have to do. It may get noisier later in the evening, but for the time we were there it was ideal -- clearly some regulars both at the tables and at the bar. We loved that there wasn't a single Little Black Dress anywhere to be seen.
I find Xiomara always reliable for friendly and flawless service; and delicious regular menu items (like the Rock Shrimp, Wild Mushroom, Truffle Oil Risotto). The times I've strayed from my faves and tried the plat du jour have been happy occasions indeed. This time was a Mache Salad with Figs, Blue Cheese, and Prosciutto, and a Balsamic Drizzle. WOW!
We really enjoyed how pleasant an experience it was. The wait staff is attentive, but not pushy, and we have never felt rushed. There is time to digest between courses; time to enjoy leisurely conversation. The food is quite good & well-prepared. I had the cold avocado soup & peppered salmon - cooked just right. Started with some pork belly that was the absolute perfect taste & texture. If you're seeking authentic Cuban cuisine: this is not it. My husband is half Cuban & found the black beans to be good, but nothing like his mom's. They also rave about their Mojitos, but we thought them a bit salty or somehow strange. I switched to wine and was very pleased with the Pinot recommended by our waitress - a nice red that worked with my salmon!
Several in my party opted for the DineLA week menu. I had a Caesar Salad, Pepper Crusted Salmon on spinach w/mashed potatoes, and a tres leches cake. Everything was delicious! The ambiance is lovely with the high ceilings and great music. This is a great place if you want to have a leisurely dinner to catch up with friends or have a date that you don't want to end. Service is friendly but the food is somewhat slow coming out. I definitely recommend the restaurant and look forward to returning.
