Wrench and Rodent Seabasstropub
Founded in 2013 by Davin and Jessica Waite, Wrench & Rodent is a space for culinary exploration and collaboration. This cozy, eclectic restaurant quickly became a destination for those who appreciated Chef Davin’s creative approach to celebrating local and responsibly sourced fish and produce.
In addition to a set sushi menu, Wrench offers an omakase as well as a list of specials that change daily. The team is committed to reducing waste and enhancing flavor by elevating all cuts of fish and veggies, as well as featuring a diverse range of species. Many menu items are simple, fresh and creative, with a lesser-known fish species complimented by ingredients from the backyard garden. Byproduct utilization drives the menu as well, and recent explorations with aging techniques have led to a dry aged fish program. Plant-forward preparations are also celebrated, and a vegan omakase is available upon request.
Teriyaki Tofu Nigiri
Very nice place. Great food and different presentations. The omikase is amazing.
Omakase was excellent. Nice selection and very well done.
Great dry aged tuna. Overall excellent flavors but a fair amount of tempura in rolls.
Spectacular as always. The food, service, ambience and general atmosphere is wonderful. I had guests from Chicago and the outside dining is perfect.
I have been enjoying this restaurant for a very long time and will continue to do so!!!!
A real treat.
Everytime Ive eaten sushi at other places, Ive left comparing it to here, and I've left disappointed. Hands down the best, freshest fish offered. I'll drive from another county to each here.
Best sushi and music in town. Hands down.
Great dining experience-unique menu…very appealing to vegans! Excellent service-everyone was pleasant and happy to accommodate! It was my husbands birthday and we had a memorable time!! We will definitely return!!
Great food, great service! We sat outside and there were many flies.
Any time we pass through Oceanside we stop here for dinner. It is always one of the highlights of our trip.
Best sushi in San Diego!
This was our 4th dinning experience here and we’ve not been disappointed. We had items off their 9/5/2021 “Special” menu. We loved everything including the Opah green eggs and ham, very unique and delicious. We were not as crazy about the smoked salmon collar, it was undercooked in some areas and others were charred black. Not sure how that is “smoked”…. Lastly, we enjoyed the peach dessert, it was light and refreshing without being too sweet.
The service was excellent and the server even grabbed a fresh fig from their fig tree! We’ll be back for the variety and great tastes!
After this restaurant was named ‘best sushi’ by SD Magazine’s Troy Johnson, we made the 45 minute drive to Oceanside on a Friday evening. We didn’t really like the atmosphere - more British pub than sushi restaurant. The service was attentive and the food tasted fresh, but it was in no way worthy of being called ‘San Diego’s best’. The prices were very reasonable, however!
It was my husbands birthday and our first time there. The food was amazing!!! We ordered omakase “chefs choice” and we were blown away! I will def be back again!
Super fresh seafood. Always good. One of our favorite places in San Diego area.
This is a hidden gem in south Oceanside. Their menu is creative and the fish is so fresh. Can't wait to go back!
The vegan omakase was beyond amazing. Innovative, creative, and delicious. It even won over the non vegan !
I took the Omakase menu. I really enjoyed the sushi but the other courses didn't impress me.
Fish was really fresh. Had the smoked kampachi special, cod with truffle oil and the Holiday in Cambodia roll.
Started with the roasted cauliflower.
Good recommendations from Rai our waitress. The experience was really excellent. Just get passed the name. :)
Everything is good or great. Love the always changing specials. Excellent seafood and plant based options. Been here many times and always a treat.
I must be a sushi purest since everyone seems to like this and I just didn’t. I won’t be back but I can see how others enjoy.
Interesting and well prepared fresh foods and seafood with friendly service
We sat on the back patio. Relaxing ambiance, friendly staff, and great food!
I applaud the creativity but the balance was off. The sauces were too strong for the fish and the sushi rice was not done well
Absolutely delicious!!! Definitely a hidden gem in North County!
Absolutely the best. You have to try the dry aged toro! Salmon with citrus salt, so simple and delicious.
Great food and great service. Most importantly, would return.
Very fresh and creative sushi. Outside patio in the back is lovely. Service was very good on a Friday night. Hope the ramen will come back in the winter!
The best “non-traditional” sushi we’ve ever had. Creative and surprising flavors. The service was fast, attentive and friendly.
The wines were interesting but we would have liked a wider selection of wine by the glass.
The first time I ate there, I had a very nice Albariño, but it was not available.
I had a great time at this restaurant. Having been a fan of the chef for a while it was a true pleasure to get to eat his food. The food lived up to all the hype and expectations and was out of this world. The omakase was an amazing deal that kept us on our toes and continued to wow us. The specials were out of this world. We were able to see the chef in true action and had the opportunity to speak with him as well. The experience was one of a kind and truly unique.
The food and server experience were excellent! That is why I keep coming back.
A lot more casual than expected. Food quality was good and great service but this is not your typical sushi restaurant. Definitely fits into the local Oceanside vibe. Overall, a good casual dining experience.
10/10 experience! It was amazing!
We absolutely loved the cauliflower and the scallops apps. Followed by 6 different rolls, all different and delicious. All 6 of us were stuffed an very happy.
We love this place, give it a go! Essentially a sushi place with some eclectic options. The ramen is really good go with the embellishments, adds an egg and
My daughter and I eat a lot of Sushi up and down the coast, I came here based on a recommendation from a friend. Menu sounds different and exciting however nothing we tried wowed us and it was expensive. Flies kept landing on us in the back patio. Service was quick but we both left sad how much we were underwhelmed. Maybe we ordered the wrong rolls? We were still hungry and would have ordered more if we had liked either of the 2 we ordered.
Great sushi! Fish Ribs are excellent. Back patio is romantic for a date night.
We tried the omakase, which was unusual (ours included a tuna pancetta and aged yello tail). Our waitress, Devon, was very fun and responsive and the atmosphere was welcoming (with 3 or four separate rooms) to us and our small dog. The owner's bulldog came around later to say hello!
This restaurant was awarded best sushi restaurant in San Diego. Yes it is. Such good sushi and sashimi. Good vibes
Been here a handful of times and it’s always mind blowing.
We did the omakase and highly recommend if you want to see what they can really do. The food is always creative and delicious.
Will be back.
