Wrench and Rodent Seabasstropub
Founded in 2013 by Davin and Jessica Waite, Wrench & Rodent is a space for culinary exploration and collaboration. This cozy, eclectic restaurant quickly became a destination for those who appreciated Chef Davin’s creative approach to celebrating local and responsibly sourced fish and produce.
In addition to a set sushi menu, Wrench offers an omakase as well as a list of specials that change daily. The team is committed to reducing waste and enhancing flavor by elevating all cuts of fish and veggies, as well as featuring a diverse range of species. Many menu items are simple, fresh and creative, with a lesser-known fish species complimented by ingredients from the backyard garden. Byproduct utilization drives the menu as well, and recent explorations with aging techniques have led to a dry aged fish program. Plant-forward preparations are also celebrated, and a vegan omakase is available upon request.

Had a couple of rolls and shrimp fried rice. Everything was delicious!
The food was amazing as we chose to have the chefs experience. The service was good , but felt there was several delays in between courses and at the end felt rushed out. Put in the reservation that it was my friends birthday to surprise her and the host mentioned when we arrived which kind of ruined the surprise but the server never mentioned anything to make it special. I would go back because the food was amazing but feel a personal touch could be added.
Best seafood in town! Ramen is to die for and make sure to get the spicy sauce and garlic chips.
Awesome night! Our waiter was great. Food was fabulous.Thank you!!
Came here for my birthday dinner. Husband and I shared the chefs choice sushi/sashimi tasting menu. It's was beautiful. The quality of the fish impeccable. Great wine selection and I believe an extreme value on the price for quality of food.
Great fresh and creative sushi in a low key setting.
Overall great experience! Food tasty and great service. The sashimi pieces have decreased in size since our last visit. Backyard dining experience and white table cloths is a great addition
Great food, great service! Try the chefs choice for sure!
Outstanding food I’m a Corporate Chef for a large company and really appreciate the thought behind the dishes etc
Amazing experience! Great food and amazing service!!! Will come back!!
Surprises all around with this delicious menu that changes:)!!
We had a 9pm reservation and they were rushing us, brought all of our food out in under 10 minutes, and starting closing down the restaurant during our meal. They brought out our sushi before our seaweed salad and apps. If you want to close earlier… don’t have a 9pm reservation….
The food was very good / drinks are a bit high priced - $4.50 for a soft drink is ridiculous. $12 for small glass Of sparkling wine ! Service started off well but fizzled out and it wasn’t busy.
Loved that they have veggie rolls - Patrick the Great .. yum
This place is a total gem! It has an unassuming exterior but the FOOD, people... THE FOOD! The chefs there are total artists and the plates look like works of art. The sushi itself is melt in your mouth and buttery (mmm that Toro especially). We got the ceviche tostada, yellowtail with Tom Kha puree, Chronic and Holiday In Cambodia rolls, Toro nigiri, Matcha panna cotta, and Sayuri Nigori sake. As we bit into every plate, my fiancé and I went "ahhhh" and sunk into our seats a little more. It was that good!! Our server was lovely too; sadly we didn't catch her name, but she was Server W on our receipt. Do yourself a favor and come here!
Great food - perfect small space with amazing ambiance.
The food was great. Very uniques sushi rolls at a reasonable price. We sat on the patio and it was a secluded, lovely atmosphere. Great service.
Very nice place. Great food and different presentations. The omikase is amazing.
Omakase was excellent. Nice selection and very well done.
Great dry aged tuna. Overall excellent flavors but a fair amount of tempura in rolls.
Spectacular as always. The food, service, ambience and general atmosphere is wonderful. I had guests from Chicago and the outside dining is perfect.
I have been enjoying this restaurant for a very long time and will continue to do so!!!!
A real treat.
Everytime Ive eaten sushi at other places, Ive left comparing it to here, and I've left disappointed. Hands down the best, freshest fish offered. I'll drive from another county to each here.
Best sushi and music in town. Hands down.
Great dining experience-unique menu…very appealing to vegans! Excellent service-everyone was pleasant and happy to accommodate! It was my husbands birthday and we had a memorable time!! We will definitely return!!
Great food, great service! We sat outside and there were many flies.
Any time we pass through Oceanside we stop here for dinner. It is always one of the highlights of our trip.
Best sushi in San Diego!
This was our 4th dinning experience here and we’ve not been disappointed. We had items off their 9/5/2021 “Special” menu. We loved everything including the Opah green eggs and ham, very unique and delicious. We were not as crazy about the smoked salmon collar, it was undercooked in some areas and others were charred black. Not sure how that is “smoked”…. Lastly, we enjoyed the peach dessert, it was light and refreshing without being too sweet.
The service was excellent and the server even grabbed a fresh fig from their fig tree! We’ll be back for the variety and great tastes!
After this restaurant was named ‘best sushi’ by SD Magazine’s Troy Johnson, we made the 45 minute drive to Oceanside on a Friday evening. We didn’t really like the atmosphere - more British pub than sushi restaurant. The service was attentive and the food tasted fresh, but it was in no way worthy of being called ‘San Diego’s best’. The prices were very reasonable, however!
It was my husbands birthday and our first time there. The food was amazing!!! We ordered omakase “chefs choice” and we were blown away! I will def be back again!
Super fresh seafood. Always good. One of our favorite places in San Diego area.
This is a hidden gem in south Oceanside. Their menu is creative and the fish is so fresh. Can't wait to go back!
The vegan omakase was beyond amazing. Innovative, creative, and delicious. It even won over the non vegan !
I took the Omakase menu. I really enjoyed the sushi but the other courses didn't impress me.
Fish was really fresh. Had the smoked kampachi special, cod with truffle oil and the Holiday in Cambodia roll.
Started with the roasted cauliflower.
Good recommendations from Rai our waitress. The experience was really excellent. Just get passed the name. :)
Everything is good or great. Love the always changing specials. Excellent seafood and plant based options. Been here many times and always a treat.
I must be a sushi purest since everyone seems to like this and I just didn’t. I won’t be back but I can see how others enjoy.
Interesting and well prepared fresh foods and seafood with friendly service
We sat on the back patio. Relaxing ambiance, friendly staff, and great food!
I applaud the creativity but the balance was off. The sauces were too strong for the fish and the sushi rice was not done well
Absolutely delicious!!! Definitely a hidden gem in North County!
