Woodside Bakery is a good choice for a varied menu and very good food. The service is also very good, but make sure the host checks you in as the restaurant is not good at validating one's OpenTable reservation. My party particularly enjoyed the bread served before our "daily special quiche," tuna melt panini, and lamb panini entrees.
Each was very good, as were the salad and french fire sides. We will return to Woodside Bakery some day soon when in Woodside.
Enjoyed our last meal here so much, came back for another within a couple of weeks. Last time I had the half rack of lamb and my husband was disappointed with his main and wished he'd had the lamb too - so this time he went for the full rack and said it was very good. It almost beat him though - he was too full afterwards, despite having a pretty huge appetite! They ask you how you want the lamb cooked: he asked for medium rare and it came a little pink in the middle, just how he likes it. This time it was my turn to be disappointed with my main course. I had the shrimp salad, but the greens were a bit soggy from the dressing and the shrimp didn't have too much flavor. I wouldn't order it again. For dessert, had the chocolate mousse again and we weren't disappointed - it is divine! Local wine by the glass was very good. I have to say, the service was excellent, yet again. Only 4 stars because of my disappointing main course but everything else was outstanding.
Food and service excellent. We were seated inside and the noise level was pretty high with both talking and banging of dishes etc. hard to talk. Have eaten outside before and much prefer that to eating that to inside seating. Parking is a problem at noon.
It was even more of a surprise to discover a large heated patio area out back. Busy and buzzing, very nice atmosphere (it was Saturday night). Friendly and attentive service, great food. I had very generous starter of the cranberry and apple salad; rack of lamb and accompanying sides cooked to perfection, and the chocolate mousse was heavenly. Husband had the mussels to start, beef hotpot as entree. Unfortunately this was far too salty - he was thirsty all night after that - but this was our only complaint. The double chocolate mousse cake also delicious. only 4 stars for the salty beef hotpot, but otherwise couldn't fault this place. Can't believe we've lived nearby for nearly 18 months and only just tried this place - we'll be back!
We were there for a Friday evening dinner. Service was great and all the food we ordered were excellent. Little pricy but worth it. Seating is very cramped. No privacy. Outdoor has lots of heaters, so very comfortable in the evening. Will go back again.
We went to Bakery Cafe for lunch on a Friday night! It was great! Food was just right, and service excellent.
I will definitely will come back to enjoy more food, and why not, some of the bake good sold in the front of the Bakery!
Restaurant is next door to better known Restaurant so is often ovwr looked. The Bakery & Cafe name does not do it justice nor the view of front room from outside. It look like a nice coffee-tea room. However, the rest of the facility is a wonderful whote cloth restaurant with indoor and patio seating.
We were seated immediately, took a while for someone to take our order but after that service was efficient. Wife had pot roast- excellent. I tried the garden plate, a mix of quinoa, kale, home grown root vegetables, served warm. It was delicious and filling.
The food was delicious and fresh. Ambiance was a little mixed, the seating is pretty tightly packed. Our waitress seemed rushed but it was a busy night. The service was satisfactory overall. I think that locals who come in more often definitely get preferential treatment at this place, but that's fine because nobody was particularly snobby. Hands down some of the best salads, wood-fired pizza, and baked goods in the area. Will come back for more pizza, house-made bread, and pie :-)
Great local hang out. Excellent local produce makes for interesting diversity in terms of the daily specials. I tend to get the fish entree which is always well done and have it with the garden vegetables. The desert options are unparalleled in the area, as the bakery knows how to manufacture miracles!
Be sure you plan to pick up some treats from their bakery!
We love sitting on the patio. We have been going less often as the patio seems to be increasingly dirty and the flies are getting out of control. We do love this place and hope a little more attention is paid to cleaning it up.
Really wanted an outside table and made a reservation to support that. Was told upon arrival outside was full. Would have gone elsewhere if I had known I'd be sitting inside. Also, salad plate was hot out of the dishwasher, which wouldn't have mattered if I was sitting outside!
Dinner was very good, my out-of-town friends enjoyed. Our server was very charming and helpful. So were "abuses". I am a local, been there many times.
Have eaten at Woodside Bakery many times, but this was the 1st visit for Sunday brunch. Broad menu with lots of choices and well-executed on the ones we tried. All of the little special touches like the homemade apricot spread for the toast...
The hard part was selecting! Definitely make reservations for brunch because it is very crowded.
Our first visit-went for brunch with friends. Half of us were very happy with our food - so 3 stars. Shrimp frittata & veggie scramble were good. However, one person had to send back an eggs Benedict-overdone egg, muffin not toasted so it was soggy. Another person specifically ordered a scramble w/o mushrooms & the order came full of them. Asked for Earl Grey tea & of the 4 kinds brought to the table - no Earl Grey but made due. Had to wave down waiters to get coffee, hot water & eventually the check. The tables were not full so not sure what why service was slow. We were charged for the dish that was sent back but not re-ordered. The waiter seemed to try hard & was apologetic so they may have been understaffed. May try again another time.
Had a lunch on Saturday at Woodside Bakery. Took 20 minutes to get a table that was reserved. Initial table squeezed in between two tables and uncomfortable for all parties to the left and right. We requested a change and it was dealt with very reluctantly even though there were several tables for two that were empty. We sat next to the window that was filthy. And then there was a bee in the restaurant that hovered on our food and did not seem to be an issue for the servers. Although my French omelet was delicious, I would not return to Woodside Cafe for a meal.
We sat in the patio area for lunch. It is a little crowded making it difficult for the servers to maneuver between the table making serving ackward at times. Service was a little slow. Food was good and staff was friendly.
The food at the bakery is very good but unless you have plenty of time and don't mind waiting for your order until you've almost lost your appetite, this isn't the place to go. The servers are not only slow, they are inattentive, water glasses go unfilled, bread baskets are empty and nothing is replenished without a request,
Had excellent service, followed up by Manager checking same at end of meal. Tasty sandwich. Foccacia (really pizza dough) offered as appetizer really tough.
The food and menu are not very adventurous. It is mainly the same selection that you get anywhere. it is pleasant sitting outside.
The outside patio is full of flies. When asked to go inside to escape you are subjected to a environment of heat (not sure the a/c is turned high enough) and the clanking of dishes in the near the open kitchen.
The salmon was not very fresh and had no flavor. It was drenched in a river of watery sauce with onions and potatoes.
The only virtue was the good service. Being so close to the great Village Pub I am not sure how this place stays in business.
Waitress was clueless and service was too slow. We were charged for an item we ordered but was never served to us. Food was good.
We buy pastries at the Woodside Bakery often which are great, although the coffee is average. I wouldn't recommend the restaurant for dinner. The back dining area is OK for dining, but pretty rustic. We made reservations through Open Table and requested a table in the back and were given a table between the bakery and bar area near the reception area which was noisy with lots of traffic. When we complained about the table the receptionist was rude. Don't waste your money eating dinner at this place. The ambiance in my opinion is terrible. McDonalds is better. It's a bakery, a breakfast place and possibly a lunch place. No ambiance and very noisy. We won't go back for dinner again! Try the Parkside Grille in Portola Valley
On 9/26 our party of 4 had reservations for 6:30pm. We arrived about 5 minutes early. We were told our table was not ready. We had not specified any particular table, only that we wished to sit in the patio area. About 20 minutes waiting we were then ushered to a patio table. One of our party asked if we could sit at a different table which the Waite person agreed. We sat for a few minutes, and then told by the Mgr. we could not have that table as it requested by someone else. We were then moved to another table. I made a comment that because of the initial wait as well as the confusion upon seating us, they could at least provide us with a glass of wine. This was done. Service has always been slow at this restaurant, however, we have had many good meals over a period of about 20 or so years. The check was reviewed, and to my surprise we were charged for 2 glasses of wine and my glass only was not charged. How foolish the management is, and because of this we have decided to never return to this restaurant....
Our 1st mistake was to drive to Woodside on a Saturday from Atherton. Our 2nd mistake was to eat here. Even though the waiter seemed responsive, we waited over 65 minutes to get our food & had to ASK where it was--especially after seeing the table next to us who sat down 15 minutes ago receive their food. Also, why are there so many flies in this restaurant? Its not in the horse paddock is it? For that wait, the manager, who NEVER came over to apologize did not take off the one meal that had to be redone. Save yourself & go to Buck's.
I've been to this restaurant 3 times in the last month and enjoyed my meals - their bread is amazing. Recently though I ordered the Asian salad substituting prawns instead of the chicken and they charged me $6 extra for just 4 medium size prawns on my salad. I would think 4 prawns an even trade for the chicken so I was disappointed in what I feel was an excessive surcharge.
This is the second time that I have ordered an item on the menu and have been disappointed with the portion size. The first time I ordered the salad with grilled salmon on top and the piece of salmon was super small. This last time I ordered the tuna melt, it was not open faced but a sandwich with sourdough bread. There was barely any tuna between the two pieces of bread! Very skimpy. It would have been a much better sandwich with the right amount of tuna salad.
The young woman serving us was outstanding with service. She was always aware we were there and we were two women...... Checking on us, asking if we needed more tea, etc. She seem professional unlike some of the male servers that don't know the first thing about "service"
This was my first visit to Woodside Bakery for a meal, and it was a lot of fun. The service was excellent, and, even though one of our group of 3 was rather late in arriving, there was no pressure or stress to order or to leave once lunch was finished. The ambience was very pleasant in the outdoor setting. My salad was delicious, and as I saw other plates being served, it appeared that the presentation of food was very well done. Will definitely return for lunch and will hope to sit outdoors again. The interior seems to be rather dark and a bit crowded.
We were here April and had a bad experience re: the service, which had never happened before. I hate to say this but : the Woodside white-going to college waiters were gone. Service was severely lacking. This time service was a bit better; we did not have to wait 30 mins for our order to be taken. However the friendliness of the wait staff was not there. The food was good but the staff was not. Not sure we will be back.
We sat outside and couldn't bear the flys. And the yellow jackets. And when I asked if they had a candle or something to help with them, they had nothing. We moved inside, and I have to say the waiter was helpful. Too bad though it was a nice warm evening. Overall the food here is quite good, but the atmosphere isn't my favorite.
Perfectly fine place for a quick meal. Nothing glamorous, even if they do feature Brunello's on their wine list. Service was better than noted on other reviews. Pizza & bread were excellent & baked goods looked very appealing. Spinach salad was ok, as was their risotto. Enclosed outdoor patio in back.
No gluten free menu or noting of items that are gluten free.
This is unusual for that caliber of restaurant in the Bay Area.
Went to the Woodside Bakery & Cafe for dinner. I have been there for lunch and breakfast a few times. Our dinner taste good and was a good value for the money The home made bread was great. The wines are a bit expensive. Corking fees if you bring your own wine is $20. The service was a but slow and the waiter never really checked on us after we were served to see how we were doing. The restaurant was pretty full, we had seating towards back, which was a bit cramped with other couples right up next to us, so not very private or intimate. Overall a good meal, would probably stick with it as a lunch or breakfast place.
They were running over an hour late on reservations and then my daughter's food was not cooked and that was delivered 45 minutes after ordering! We asked the waitress if there was a kid's menu and she said no but then kids at other tables seemed to have kid meals cooked from off the menu. She was not helpful.
I have been here before and loved it and this experience was horrible in contrast.
We have been here many times before, but this time was just a mess. We went for Father's Day and had a 10:30am reservation. We weren't seated until 11:10am and food did not arrive until close to 12:30pm. Other people left their tables without receiving their food. We were not warned it would be such a long wait. I was not offered a refill of my coffee until my food arrived. They must have booked too many reservations, accepted too many walk-ins or not hired enough staff. Just not the way to run a restaurant. I think once before we had a long wait to be seated /food as well. But, the bakery is high quality and delicious. We may consider buying desserts there in the future, but we won't be back to eat a meal.
We were excited to learn that they have a garden that started yielding vegetables and hoped that they would offer vegan alternatives in the menu. We were disappointed to see a menu that consisted of only animal flesh such as the flesh of baby animals like lamb. Can't the Chef at least leave baby animals off the menu given that he has access to a garden that yields vegetables? Since our group did not eat animals, the only choice we were left with were salads that contained cheese which the server claimed were vegan. In this day and age this restaurant should keep up with the times and offer cruelty free vegan alternatives in the menu instead of being so dependent on the flesh and milk of animals. Our salads were ok -- nothing special.
The computers were down at Woodside Bakery, I know this because our waiter told us about ten times….He was completely frazzled. They should have practice runs with old school hand written tags….for just in case. He forgot our popovers…four times…finally got them after our food was delivered because I asked someone else. The food was good never the less and I'll be back but, will ask for our regular waiter who would just deliver good service and stop making excuses. A family sat down nest to us…waited for some time with no attention and walked out. Good thing the computers weren't cooking breakfast cause what we got was really good!
We arrived before the lunch crowd hit, and so service was just wonderful! The quiche that I ordered was a generous size and quite tasty. With it, I had the soup of the day, a pureed lemon, artichoke, zucchini delight. It was the perfect note for meal.
We have had better experiences at this restaurant in the past. However, this time the food was very salty, salad greens were limp, coffee was bitter. They can do better
