Woodfire Grille at Diamond Jo - Northwood Ratings and Reviews
We came to the casino to celebrate a birthday. We had heard good reviews about the restaurant so made reservations on line. Everything was great until we waited and waited and waited for each course. It look at least a 1/2 hour between our drinks arriving and our soup or salad. We then waited and finally received our bread basket, which was never refilled. We had to ask about our main course and it finally arrived after 1 and 1/2 hours. After 2 hours we finally said no thanks to dessert. We were going to be comped two desserts because of our wait, but that even took too long. While the food was excellent the wait was ridiculous. The restaurant was not packed and there were only 4 of us.
First, let me say this is a restaurant in a casino, in Iowa. It is NOT fit for foodies. We were in Albert Lea MN for a memorial service and sought out this restaurant to avoid the other options which were all either fast food, convenience stores listed as restaurants?? or very sketchy looking. When we arrived, I was surprised that we could only access the restaurant from inside the casino. There was no exterior entrance. Given that casinos still allow smoking, this was an immediate turn off. The restaurant itself is nice, clean and staffed with friendly people. The menu is kind of what you’d expect. Steaks, seafood and a la carte sides. The French onion soup, which is a sort of thermometer for me, was edible but not great. Quite on the sweet side. My caprese salad came out immediately following my soup and I sent it back. It turns out, they simply put it in fridge. Once I was ready for it, she brought it back and the plate was ice cold and had started to sweat. The mozzarella was now too cold and had morphed to a strange, gritty texture. The tomatoes looked like Roma’s, and unripe ones at that. Worst yet, there was a strange, leafy, dressed salad (not garnish) in the middle which amounted to more food than the caprese. My scallops, shrimp and polenta were good but pan seared in exactly the same seasonings and the shrimp were VERY done. My husbands ribs were bland and quite the opposite portion size of my meal. Overall, it’s a casino restaurant trying to be way more than it is. There’s no quality ingredients here and I doubt the idea of farm to table is known. The patrons here are your typical, small town casino gamblers who probably wouldn’t know a quality cut of beef from roadkill. So, lower your expectations. That sounds harsh, but I’m only trying to paint a valid portrait of the caliber of the restaurant.
The service was great, our waitress knew exactly the to keep our experience on track and yet let us enjoy our conversation. The food was ok , large portions , too large about half as much or less price would bring us back more often, we can't afford the return very often.
Not very good. High prices for what I thought was low quality. Food was cold (especially the beans and ribs). Appetizers not very good- crab dip tasted very fishy. Flatbread very boring, not much flavor. The king crab itself was of very low quality. Butter that came with was tasteless. My husbands prime rib was overdone and very small, thin cut. For the price they charge I thought it was a terrible value. Not busy at all at 7pm on a Saturday and now I know why. Would not recommend or return. We did like the wine and nice pours so that was one highlight.
Food was fantastic! Would recommend to anyone! Steaks were melt in your mouth and the baked potatoes were the size of small footballs! Walleye was as big as the plate and just as scrumptious. Wonderful atmosphere, calm and relaxing. Could easily visit with friends.
The Dining experience was nice. The atmosphere inside the restaurant was outstanding. The only issue I had was with my waitress.
The waitress didn't know the difference between a flat iron and a sirloin.
She was beyond slow, the service was below par. The couple next to us complained as well.
You can expect to wait roughly an hour before you receive a meal that takes 10 minutes max to cook.
For a meal for 2, you should expect to pay $+100
That is horrible considering the service. I will try again, but I won't have such high expectations next time.
I was very disappointed in our dinner! I have been here several times before. It was great and I highly recommended it. I will not go back or recommend it again for that kind of a meal. I was embarrassed that I had taken guests to eat there. Something has changed for the worse! The grilled Prime Rib was horrible as it was not even close to Prime Rib. The Prime Rib had been fantastic last time I was there. I understand Ala Cart but it came as a thin slab of meat on a white plate. It was not appealing from the start and tasted nothing like Prime Rib. Yes the menu did say, "grilled Prime Rib" but it is very misleading. The piece of meat was not high quality. I can not believe others who think they are ordering Prime Rib wouldn't have our same reaction. The side dishes; potatoes, mushrooms, lobster mac & cheese were ok but not nearly the quality preparation as in the past. Portion size of side dishes were smaller but similar price to the past and nothing special like they had been. I do not mind paying high prices for quality food. Now grilled, questionable cuts of meat, new or poor chef to save money?? This meal was not worth the money and not what we expected at all. I am sad if this is the kind of restaurant Corporate wants to promote in this Casino. In my opinion, previously it had been an outstanding restaurant in North Iowa. This is no longer the case. I will say our server Clara was great!
I've ate at restaurants from around the country and this experience was one of the top five worst I've ever experienced. Came here for my first year anniversary and was expecting to pay for great food, however this was not the case. Waiters are wear t-shirts but the dress appeal is supposed to be smart casual. Food was as bland as it could be for a $36 steak, potatoes, and mushrooms. Steak was burnt along with the asparagus. Best part was the appetizer. Avoid this place at all costs, definitely not worth the $120+.
We went for an expensive special birthday date-night meal and we they only fulfilled the expensive portion. We had the crab dip starter: the bread was great, but while the dip was tasty it was very oily. For the entrée my husband had a 10 oz prime rib, the house salad and glazed carrots. The steak was partially overcooked, partially undercooked and had little flavor. The carrots were undercooked. The 7 dollar salad was fine, but who can really screw that up? I had the house WFG burger specialty. The meat had good flavor, but the patties were too small for the bun and the curry aioli tasted pretty much like mayonnaise out of a jar. The garlic French fries were crisp, but the garlic taste was minimal. I've had better garlic fries at Red Robin. Ambiance and waitstaff was excellent, but overall a disappointing meal.
Went to the New Year's brunch. It was quiet because there was no one there. The flyer we had lead us to believe we would have Bloody Marys and Mimosas with the brunch. Not true. We were told right away by our waitress that was an error, the Bloody Mary bar was an additional $10. We had lobster linguine and frittata. The lobster linguine price was $28, it was good but had small pieces of shells in it. Told the server to tell the chef. Never heard anything after that. The frittata had prosciutto, mushrooms and smoked cheese. It had no flavor at all. You would think that $20 eggs would taste good....nope.... Don't know if the regular menu would be any tastier or not, but this experience was not a good one.
Our waitress was very knowledgeable and helpful with the food and drink choices. When that appetizers and food came they were some of the best I have eaten. Our group ordered the prime rib and filet mignon and both were among the best we have eaten. The scallops were large and had wonderful flavor also. Overall a great experience with great food would recommend to everyone looking for a great steak.
We were seated at our reservation time however once ordering it took an hour and 20 minutes to get our food. We were told a party of 21 people were there just getting their food and then we would get ours. No matter if it is large groups or small groups, it should not have taken that long to receive our food. We asked for the manager and she brought the chef to our table and put him on the spot which was awkward.
My sister, nephew, and I went for dinner. We enjoyed the quiet atmosphere and dim lighting with a lit fireplace. Our waitress was friendly and provided great service. I had Prime Rib which was a bit chewy, and not a lot of flavor, but my sister had thee most tender, delicious
Rib eye. Both steaks came with asparagus that was cooked perfectly. The sides were enough for us to split...Mac and Cheese with Lobster, and Mushrooms. Very Good! My nephew had the portabella fries, and a salad. Both were really good. I will eat there again!
This the third time we have been here this year, and it was the third time either service or food was beyond unacceptable. First, the server got our order wrong. We waited for her to return, which she did 5/6 minutes later. My husband is diabetic and needed to eat, so we ate what was given, even though the order was wrong. Told server about it, after she came back to check on us. She did offer to correct it, but it was too late, as my husband need to eat, and we were splitting a meal. We were never offered a second beverage or water refills until she brought the bill, after the second correction. Then said server said to me, "Well, you don't have to get so upset." What the F@*k Over!!!! I should have stiffed her, but I did not. She got 10%, not our usual 20 to 25% . Then the other visits: One occasion we waited 25 minutes for drink (no bartender on duty) & they could not make the drinks listed on their menu; followed by a 40 minute wait for food in a quiet restaurant makes one wonder who is in charge. Combine the above with burnt food on the first visit, is totally unacceptable. I have been in the restaurant management business for over 25 years with some of the largest upscale sit down chains, and hotels. Plus 8 more years in food service business working as a consultant, so I am totally appalled by the service and food. We will never return. You are better getting a sub sandwich or burger at one of the fast food places. Better yet, drive by and forget The Woodfire Grill.
