I thought it was highly overrated. I waited a week for a reservation and found that I was disappointed. There were so many more better options. I think it’s one of those neighborhood spots that are only popular based on the location to the neighborhood.
I would return, but with much lower expectations and I wouldn’t wait more than 10 mins.
As usual, the food was really very good. And as usual, the noise level was pretty high - so much so that it gets in the way of conversation a little . Service is good, but often can feel a little stilted. Not bad, just somehow not entirely gracious, like they're working from a script that needs some editing.
The food was outstanding, for the most part. We had a hard time, literally, with the crust of the pear tart, which could not be cut with a fork, and was hard to cut with a knife. Instead of puff pastry, we thought that a pie or tart crust would enhance the delicious pear concoction.
Otherwise, top of the line.
Food was very tasty with good-sized portions of meat. We ordered a lovely duo of cheese and Chicken Liver Pate as appetizers which we thoroughly enjoyed along with well-made cocktails. My dinner companion loved the duck and I enjoyed the Double Pork Chop with Butterbeans and Collard Greens. We shared the Dark Chocolate Torte that was our sweets splurge inasmuch as we were celebrating his birthday. It reminded me of a flourless cake, dense, intense and rich.
Overall the service was satisfactory with the exceptions that the waiter had to be reminded to deliver part of the order and a container was requested for the remainder of my entree and sides . One box was delivered to the table and I erroneously assumed it was the entree ( one of the most expensive items on the menu ) and discovered the next day that it was merely 2 slices of the Acme bread and a cup of Olive Oil. Such a costly mistake and disappointment for me!
Food was disappointing and lack creativity. Crab salad appetizer could have been served at a nondescript hotel restaurant. Pork chop & ribeye entrees were overwhelmed by unnecessary sides and smothered in sauces which is too bad because pork was really tasty just by itself.
They took 55 minutes to bring us our food for lunch service. They were not very apologetic for it. They seemed a bit annoyed that we were annoyed it took so long, With that said it was a darn good pastrami sandwich but for a lunch who wants to wait an hour for it.
Wood Tavern is one of my favorites spots to eat. The food is off the hook and the staff is hella cool. It's a great spot to go whether you're on a date, or flying solo, but plan ahead. It gets packed quickly, however if you going for it a late dinner, you all good! It's my favorite spot on this side of the Bay!
I've been wanting to visit Wood Tavern for a few months after I first heard about it. The restaurant is always fully booked, so best to make reservations in advance. There are a few bar seats and some are right in front of one the cook's grill station. I thought that would be interesting to watch, and I noticed some of the patrons having a conversation with the cook. Overall, the atmosphere was lively and friendly. The food was outstanding. Very hearty and warming. Our service was superb, with one caveat. We arrived at 6:00 pm on a Friday evening. We shared an appetizer (the pork belly appetizer was amazing) and then had our main courses (I'd recommend both the duck breast and the halibut), and skipped dessert. The service was attentive throughout, and the courses arrived promptly, until it was time to leave. We noticed other diners who arrived later than us waiting for their next course. It took about 30 minutes after our plates were cleared until we had our check paid. There were 3 groups of 2 waiting outside for tables when we left. I don't know if it was just a busy Friday night or if they were a little short handed, but I would recommend arriving early. It's too bad about the slow down in service. Up until the end, I would have said that the service was VERY good. They were very attentive with water, clearing plates, stopping to talk about the menu, etc....And the food was really good. I recommend trying Wood Tavern.
Enjoyed a wonderful lunch to celebrate our 33rd wedding anniversary. Our waitress was terrific, offering helpful suggestions and seemed to really be engaged in making sure everything was to our liking. From the cocktails, to the delicious meal, to the cappuccino prepared by our waitress and the very reasonable prices, everything was terrific
This place was great. Warm and inviting. Great meat and cheese plates. The daily pasta dish is tasty and rustic. The pork chop is huge and very tasty. Highly recommend. Next door is Southie their sister restaurant; grab a drink there if you have to wait for a table
