The most unexciting of Puck's restaurants I've been to. The fish was delicious, the filet mignon was very tender but not flavorful at all-perhaps that's why they had sauce on the side and the bone in ribeye was good but not great. Not sure if they all use the same purveyors. The other Puck restaurants have served delicious meals. Perhaps it was an off night for this location
I ate at Pete Lugar's for many years when I visited New York for business in the 90's, and I remember Wolfgang from those years--he is quite the character.
Wolgang's is an old-school steakhouse at the top end. It is very traditional and very good. The lamb chops and lobster we ordered were excellent. The salmon was not not cooked to order--not wrong, just not what my persnickety girlfriend demanded--so they took it back and got it right (I would have eaten it).
Service was fine, and the bill was exactly what you would expect for a high-end steakhouse in LA.
Is Wolgang's better than the top end in LA? I would say no. It is as good as Larsen's, Grill on the Alley, Nik and Stef's and others. I think Cut is a more elegant room, and I like Jar better for the sides. But if you go, you should be happy.
Took 20 minutes after being seated to even get noticed by the server (for fun, I was timing it once I noticed we were getting ignored). Took another 10 minutes to get water after we asked...ended up flagging down another waiter.
Initial service put a damper on the enjoyment of the evening, but it did improve after that and I did leave satisfied.
We had a lovely birthday lunch. the ambiance, quiet sounds, delicious food and service were perfect. The piece de resistance was the "surprise" Birthday desert...Vanilla ice cream Sundae. We were kids again! And it was complimentary! Highly recommend! I would go back just for the ice cream sundae!! Best wishes, Grace
The food is horrible. The $10 steak fries did not taste like potatoes. The chicken Milanese did not taste like chicken. Tasted like rubber. The Chilean sea bass I had was not edible. We previously had steak in this restaurant and it was mediocre. It was a complete waste of evening out.
Food was very good and very well prepared, but the environment was WAY TOO noisy to have a simple conversation with the person next to you. The interior of the space consists of exclusively hard surfaces: big open space with no sound baffling whatsoever. Having to shout at dinner companions was a huge detraction from the overall experience. Also, the wait-staff were too eager to remove plates, and otherwise not really paying attention to what was going on with the tables. There were large TV's over the bar area playing sports (in full view of diners at the other side of the restaurant, and to add to the cacophony a jazz pianist with a synth bass backtrack (who would probably have been lovely to experience, were the environment not so noisy). I would expect a more restful, calm, and formal dining experience form a restaurant with this kind of price point.
This is the Third Wolfgang's Steakhouse I've visited, and the first time I left slightly disappointed.
When I made my reservation, and left instructions that my wife would be celebrating a milestone birthday. I asked for a romantic table or booth, and I asked them to help me make the evening very special. All I was expecting was their usual excellent service.
Instead the service was sub-par.
When we arrived, the restaurant wasn't full. So, the Maitre'd didn't bother to check my reservation (even though I told him I had one). He sat us at a random table right next to the loud bar when people were watching the a football game. Not the most romantic spot in the place.
There were other booths and tables available but my wife kept saying she was fine so I didn't bother to ask to change.
During the food service, the waiter's assistants kept coming by and remove plates from our table for no reason. For example, they took our bread saucers before we even had a chance to eat some of the bread.
They also began bringing out our food much to quickly. Our appetizer came out and then our salads 30 seconds later.
We both felt extremely rushed.
Our waiter had his assistants take the food back to the kitchen and did monitor them for better timely service.
At the end of the meal, we were offered a dessert menu. We didn't see anything we really wanted, but I was shocked that no birthday dessert was offered.
In fact nobody wished my wife Happy Bithday.
The food was good as always, but I was very disappointed by the service offered that day.
I hope this establishments takes the time to at least read the reservation requests people make. There's more to the dinning experience than the food. It's all about the customer service.
Sadly, the service wasn't the best this time.
Not very impressed with the food. I ordered the Ribeye and it was not well seasoned and the cut of meat was tuff. The mash potatoes were over-whipped. The drink I had from the bar was excellent. I ordered a kettle one dirty martini. The service was good, not exceptional, but good.
Group of buddies and I grab steak together every few months at a different steak house around LA, and had been looking forward to Wolfgang's on account of the owner's track record & history of top-shelf service at Peter Luger. That record made the poor service we received all the more disappointing. We were seated for 15 minutes before our waiter made an appearance, at which point he just popped up with "Are you guys ready?" No greeting, no specials, no rapport...nothing. The courses came out on a halting timeline - some quick, some with long waits in between. The bone-in ribeye was a fine (and very large) cut of meat, well-seasoned, and well-prepared. But everything surrounding it was unremarkable. The steak sauce was watery and tasted more like shrimp cocktail sauce. The German potatoes were dry. And the mushrooms were small and didn't add much at all in the way of flavor.
One last thing on the service: we've been to our share of fine steak houses at this point, and the best of the bunch run like Swiss timepieces. Staff swoops in and out gracefully, with the precision and timing of ninjas. That was not the case here, from the waiter on down. Clumsy interludes, crumbs left on the table, silverware clanging around...by the meal's end, as the restaurant started to thin out, servers were milling about the restaurant floor aimlessly. This was no well-oiled machine. I realize this complaint may come off snooty or whatever, but when you're paying for a $53 steak there's a certain experiential aspect you expect to come with it. Seeing a top-flight service staff executing the delivery of a top-flight meal is like watching choreography in motion, like a ballet or a perfectly blocked sweep off tackle. This was...not that. At all.
The meat's the centerpiece of any steak dinner, and to that end it was a fine steak. But you can get a fine steak in a lot of places, and everything else about this meal was pretty sub-par.
Das Restaurant war, aufgrund des offenen Bar-Bereiches, sehr laut. Unser Tisch hat stark gewackelt, was von den Kellnern gesehen aber nicht behoben wurde.
Allgemein wurden wir sehr schnell abgefertigt. Man hatte stark das Gefühl nicht willkommen zu sein. Normalerweise hat man in guten Restaurants die Zeit sich zu unterhalten und den Abend zu genießen, stattdessen sollte man nach 30 min mit allem fertig sein. Die Kellner waren nicht besonders freundlich und bemüht.
Das Steak an sich war sehr lecker. Wir hatten als Beilage das Kartoffelpüree, welches stark an Püree aus der Tüte erinnerte. Das Dessert hat leider auch geschmeckt wie im Supermarkt gekauft.
Also alles in allem stimmte dort das Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis überhaupt nicht. Wir haben woanders, für wesentlich weniger Geld, wesentlich besser gegessen!
I enjoyed my evening at Wolfgang's. The service is really wonderful. The food, unfortunately, was not as good as the service. The tuna tartar had no seasoning -- in general, all of the food (we ate steaks and sides) was under-seasoned. It was the best service we've had in a restaurant in a very long time -- I didn't love my meal, but it was OK.
Started slow, wasn't addressed for a while after seating, BUT I talked to the mgr briefly and he was amazing, totally flipped the switch on the evening. He bought us the first round of drinks and personally tended to our table several times.
Shrimp Cocktail was legit, Porterhouse for 2 was amazing, creamed spinach was tasty and creme brulee was on point.
When I first made the reservation I thought is was a Wolfgang Puck restaurant, it isn't but didn't disapoint.
