Wishbone - West Loop
Also, please note that we do not accept reservations for Saturday/Sunday Brunch.
Love the new location. Although I had a simple salad with chicken, it was very delicious!
we had a 9am reservation on mother’s day...before the big breakfast rush so it was not crowded and plenty of seating for 4 in the main dining room. i have always felt if you take the time to make a reservation the restaurant should provide decent seating, save a table if needed, but nope, we were taken to the back room and literally put in a back corner. the server came to the table and took our drink order and i kid you not, it took 20 minutes to receive one of the four drinks, another few minutes to get two more drinks and a good five more minutes to get the final drink. I have eaten at wishbone before so i was familiar with the food, my breakfast: crab cakes Benedict with poached eggs was disappointing. the eggs were cooked through...no yummy runny eggs...big bummer. the potatoes were delish, and the other meals: spinach omelette, brisket hash and pancakes were “good”. of course while eating, looking for the server for a second drink was challenging. i would like to chalk this up to it being mother’s day, but first there was no mother’s day rush when we were there, and second this restaurant is not unfamiliar with high volume dining. overall a disappointing experience.
Excellent spot for a business breakfast - casual, great food, great location relative to downtown... and you can make a reservation
This location is closed permanently. Wish you would not have let me make a reservation for a location that is closed...
Hi Mandy, Thanks for your review but just wanted to let you know we are not closed. We moved to a new location 6 blocks east at 161 N Jefferson St. on Oct 1, 2018. Same owners, same menu, just a different address. I would love for you to come check us out and see how you like the new space. Ask for Julie or Joel when you come in!
The food was fantastic! We will definitely be back
The staff was so welcoming and attentive! The head chef and his sou chefs came out to check on us and talked to us! It was a great dinner and I highly recommend it to anyone!!!!
I was under the impression that Wishbones would be a vibrant, modern, hip, spot. It may be to the locals, as I am from out of town. We came an hour prior to closing time so I'm sure that affected the ambiance. I was really bummed that the bar was closed. I didnt necessarily want to order a drink but It would have contributed to the lack luster ambiance. The service was prompt and friendly and I was relieved when my food came out hot. I'm not a huge fish consumer but the catfish was a little mushy for me but the side items were some of the best that I've ever had. I ordered the mashed sweet potatoes and cheesy grits; we were brought corn muffins which were perfect. There was a wondering man who came in and could have been upset by a waitresses callous demeanor but he quickly was put out. For the reason that I was able to easy my leftovers two days later and it was still delicious, I'd come back or recommend wishbone to someone in the area.
Nice rib-eye, mashed sweet potatoes are a must, and the corn bread with whipped butter are to die for. A generous glass of wine was a very nice touch.
It's nice to know there are places like this for a large group! Great beer selections, as well as wine and mixed drinks. The food is hearty and very, very tasty! The barbecue is great as well as the seafood. It was very fresh! And our server was outstanding!
I really like this restaurant. The food is good, prices are reasonable, people are friendly, you can sit and talk with friends.
I had a wonderful experience back in 2008 when the chef had put out a wonderful tasting menu for us during lunch, so I was excited to come back for dinner with a date!
I made reservations for 7pm on a Saturday night which were not even needed as we walked in and there were many open tables. The waiter was fairly quick to take our drink order and bring us the drinks. We ordered the hurricane, which was delicious! Then we got to the appetizers. There wasn't much to choose from and the waiter was not helpful in our decision. We ordered 1 crab cake and shared it. The crab cake was good, but we really wanted something more. For dinner I ordered the backend trout with spinach and cheese grits. The trout was super salty. It was cooked well but the salt definitely over powered the rest of the spices. The spinach was half raw and the amount of lemon used made mouth pucker. The cheese grits were ok, but there were kind of bland. My date ordered the brisket. It was cooked well, but a tad tough. She too had the spinach and grits with the same issues. For dessert we had the bread pudding. The bread pudding was more of a piece of bread cake with a tasty bourbon sauce. It was good, but not very traditional. I don't know if I'd go back for dinner. I hear lunch is good, we shall see.
The Fat Tuesday buffet was excellent. Mixed drinks were good and, when my whiskey sour wasn't sour enough, the waiter made sure to have it made to meet my expectations. The live music was great too.
My first time patronizing this restaurant was on Valentines Day and I was extremely disappointed. It was not extremely crowded but maybe that was crowded for them but since I never been there I don't really know what their normal crowd is. The server took forever to take our order and even came to get the specialty menu from us to let another party see it, therefore once our food came we had to rush and most of my food was in a to go box because we had another scheduled event to attend. My husband did finish his and said the burger was great, which is the only good thing I have to say!! I also wanted to order the banana pudding with my food and the server told me to wait until later because otherwise he would forget which didn't make much sense to me because that was the purpose of me telling him then, so I never got it! I ordered the shrimp and grits which was gross and okra which tastes like it was fried or baked in old grease! By the way I made reservations and still had to stand in line like everyone else, so it was pointless!
Dined on Valentine's Day before a concert. As always truly enjoyed the meal. Great comfort food at reasonable prices.
Great place for down home/New Orleans style cooking with a large selection for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
I haven't gone to Wishbone in years so I thought it would be a good time to head back and get some good ol comfort food...well let's just say I haven't missed much. The shrimp and grits along with the margarita I had was not the best. I should have known the food was not the greatest because I was able to change my reservation the same day. Nonetheless, I won't be back for another visit. I wish them the best of luck for the future.
The food and service were great. Wishbone is always great. We will definitely be back again!
We went to Wishbone for an early dinner before a concert at the UC. We were quickly seated, due to it being early there was no problems. Our waitress Charmaine was wonderful and answered any questions we had about the menu. Service was great and the food exceptional and a good value. We will return and recommend this good southern food oasis.
The jambalaya entrees that we had were average, low on seasoning. The side dish of green beens with parsnip was absolutely delicious. The cornbread was tasty.
Was really looking forward to checking this place out for dinner. My girlfriend had the fried chicken and I the ribs. We weren't impressed with the food. There are many better options in Chicago
Sat outside, has a great waitress and a good menu for the kids. Had the pulled pork platter with Mac n cheese, spinach coleslaw. Both BBQ sauces we great...even better mixed together:).
We sat outside for dinner before attending a concert at the winery on Randolph. The service was great and the food was delicious. Very laid back relaxing atmosphere.
I've been going to Wishbone for many years. We often go for brunch but will occasionally go for dinner. We had a show at City Winery and decided to go to Wishbone for dinner instead of paying through the nose for fancy food. Wishbone is excellent, southern style comfort food at it's finest. The West Loop has become a haven for fancy, expensive, experimental food - and that's great because there is a time and a place for everything. However, when you are looking for something more down-to-earth, that offers EXCELLENT food, keep Wishbone in mind.
This is one of the few places that everybody in the family likes. Wonderful Cajun food. Tried crawdad cakes for the first time. They had big chunks of crawdads throughout. Service was a little slower than usual but overall very nice.
Beef brisket was tender, BBQ sauce was tasty. Various sides to choose from, the home fries were made with garlic and onions, YUM
After hearing about this restaurant from several people, I decided to take my husband there for Father's Day brunch. While the food was good, the service and atmosphere left a lot to be desired. We had a party of 9 and the seating was so tight that it was difficult to find room to place the food and drinks on the table without a lot of maneuvering and rearranging (people, chairs and plates). Perhaps it was exceptionally busy and cramped because it was Father's Day. However, if that is the case, they should warn large parties ahead of time that there's a chance they will be extremely uncomfortable while dining. Other than that, the food was ok but if you're looking for great Southern cuisine, go to Heaven on 7 instead.
I chose Wishbone for Father's Day for the variety of options on the menu. After making a reservation in advance, I needed to add to my reservation. I called and was told it wasn't a problem since they had advance notice. I should have gotten that person's name because when we arrived, it was a problem. The hostess said she didn't get the message to add five people. We had to wait 45 minutes past our reservation time for our table. The seating was a bit uncomfortable (several tables pushed together with a corner booth as anchor) but we made the best of it. Everyone enjoyed the food. There were only two mix-ups in the orders but they were corrected quickly. Our server was great, very attentive. We'll return, but not in a large group.
Wishbone is truly one of the best brunch spots in all of Chicago. Highly recommended!
We planned to have Sunday brunch and taste a sampling if all their food. However, once we arrived, there was no brunch, in the typical sense of the word. But we stayed, ordered off the menu and enjoyed everything.
Reasonable priced dinner. Not the typical neighborhood reaturant. Food is good
My guest and I had a great time at this restaurant. They didn't rush you to eat and let you dine at your leisure. The wait staff was excellent and the food was great. Would recommend to anyone and plan to visit again in the near future.
The food is southern to a tea! Try the grits they are the best.
This was my first time at this location. We are occasional visitors to the Lakeview one (3-4 times a year). The only reason we went here was because were meeting some out-of-town visitors who were staying downtown. We had a 6:30 OpenTable reservation (1st time I have used OpenTable for Wishbone), we were not seated until 6:55 and weren't addressed by a server until 7:20 (we went ahead and ordered everything right then). Things thankfully sped up from there as we were served our food at 7:40. So, we were able to enjoy a pretty good dinner.
I don't feel like the OpenTable reservation made much of a difference. However, I have had enough good experiences at Wishbone that I will probably go back (though not sure about the downtown location).
The food was decent but the service was terrible. We were seated and waited at least five minutes before we were acknowledged. This would be fine had the restaurant been crowded. I asked for water on 3 separate occasions and unfortunately never got my refill. Really? Is there a one glass limit? The server couldn't remember whose entrees was whose (we were a party of 2).
Another great dining experience at wishbone!! This time we want for dinner, usually we go for brunch!! The food and drinks were great and dessert was fantastic!! We will definitely be back again!!
Wishbone is a great place for comfort food. They have a heart for kids, but don't impose that on guests without children. My guest and I had meatloaf in different varieties. Delicious and about the best cole slaw I have had anywhere. Reasonable prices and pleasant atmosphere. During the summer, very nice outdoor spot.
My phone died and I asked the server if she could find a charge for me and she did. She went asking everyone worked there until she found me one and was watching my phone for me while it was being charged at the counter. Can't also for better service than that.
Great place for a family birthday dinner. Lots of meal options including breakfast for kids to eat unlike other restaurant that say they are kid friendly but offer limited choices. Attentive and polite waiter service. Dinner was pretty good and reasonable in price for a large party of 9 people including kids. would definitely recommend for other people to try out the place for a brunch or dinner.
Southern with a twist...plenty of non fried choices...surprised they didn't have some form of fried cocktail but maybe that's in development. Great taste, casually courteous service, and plenty to look at in the room. We all ate way too much and just kept trying things. Urp.
