For over 15 years, this unique eatery, located on the campus of Sullivans University, has offered diners a culinary tour of the world, from hearty American favorites to artful, nouvelle cuisine. Under the direction of master chef John Castro, Winston's Restaurant prepares a wide variety of dishes, from breakfasts and lunches to dinner entrees and decadent desserts. The restaurant also boasts a full bar, featuring beer, wines from all over the world and craft cocktails.
what a gem! chef does the best lamb chops with couscous i've ever tasted, and all accompanying items are superb. don't miss the sauteed scallops/grits for an appetizer - succulent, perfect sear and sweetly divine. and then there's the decadent chocolate cake w/orange cream between layers and chocolate ganache icing - OMG! Ian's and MJ's friendly, spot-on service make the experience a total TEN!!
We love Winston's, but this night was a definite miss. The food was B-flat at best. However, we will come back.
This was our first experience at Winston's. We were greeted warmly and quickly seated. I tried the Not Brown and Creme Brulee desert. Wife tried the Filet of Beef with Truffle Fries. We enjoyed them immensely. We will definitely return.
I took my boyfriend to Winston's for his 50th birthday after learning about the restaurant from a Sullivan staff member. We were both impressed by the amazing food, service, and ambiance of the restaurant. The boyfriend made the comment that if we steered clear of adult drinks we could afford to eat well at Winston's every weekend.
We enjoyed a wonderful meal with the lobster dip appetizer and the pancit (which was eaten as a meal!). Fabulous quail with maple sauce on a savory waffle and sea bass over potatoes. The Sea bass had a delicious crust of seasonings, very unique. Would not hesitate to recommend the food and beautiful ambiance.
I love going to Winstons! The food is terrific and it always feels special being there. Great service, can't ask for more!
Food was good but expensive. They ran out of their bread product on a Saturday night with only four tables full. Our server was very nice but we had to ask for more tea, more water, lemon for the water twice, etc.
Fantastic! Delicious! Will definitely visit again for brunch!
I had the Nutella French Toast with a side of eggs. My children finished off what I couldn't. Portions were nice size. Very friendly staff.
Wow talk about an amazing meal - total perfection, Winston's Restaurant and Executive Chef John Castro presented their 18th Annual Tribute to the Heirloom Tomato Dinner Friday and Saturday night at Winston's Restaurant at Sullivan University. Every course of the 6 course dinner, yes including desert, featured Heirloom Tomatoes from Brooke Eckmann's Ambrosia Farms. Big fun, and is just the start of amazing things that happen weekly at Winston's under the guidance Chef Castro. This hidden gem is always amazing. If it's a special event , a dinner for 2 or a Sunday Bunch it's is always perfection and always deserving of 4 stars.
Nice presentation. Good food and good service. We have always had positive experiences at Winstons.
This was our first visit to Winston's, and we went for an anniversary dinner. The 2 ladies serving the few diners on a quiet, slow, very warm Friday evening did a good job. There was not a printed wine list- our server showed me the selection of wines from her hand written notes. She recommended a white, from a "bottle that had just been opened", later making me wonder how long the red blend wine I selected had actually been opened. I rated my food great for presentation and ok for taste- baked quail, haricots verts (few, skinny and warm when served) and a nutty (fairly dry, unfortunately) cornbread made in a waffle iron. My husband LOVED his steak, but had to request that his baked potato be heated some more.
We had a wonderful time The food was plentiful and delicious.
I was very impressed by this restaurant, especially our server. I asked for a lemonade, which wasn't on the menu. He actually took the time to make lemonade for me, which was absolutely delicious. I enjoyed the bread baskets that were placed on the table (the banana nut bread that was included in the variety basket was quite tasty). I definitely plan to come again.
As usual, Winston's came through with a wonderful evening. The lamb chops were the best I've ever had (and I love lamb, so I order it as often as I can), with a crispy sear and just the right temp (I prefer most meats on the rare side). My server, Ian was attentive, friendly and extremely professional. He made sure my tea was refilled without being asked, answered all my questions about food prep, and, since a thunder storm kept the usual crowd to a minimum, was able to make time to chat with me about the restaurant and his very positive experiences there! He (and Mary Jo, the other server that night) personify the Winston's reputation: excellent food all the time; and a bright, personable and HAPPY staff!
Wouldn't waste my time going here anymore. It isn't like it used to be. The service has gone down, as well as the quality of the food. The filet we had was equal to the filet at Outback. It is a quiet place, this is the only positive. They close at 10:00pm on Saturday, and at 8:51 we were the last guest in the restaurant. Before we received our bill, they were already cleaning the bar area and closing it down. When we received our bill at 8:53, they already started taking off table clothes and cleaning to close up. This made us feel like we were simply in the way, and an inconvenience to them. When we walked out the door, they still had an hour before closing. We have been here many times and recommended it to many people, but would never recommend it to anyone ever again.
Fabulous romantically quiet ambience. Great food! Great service!
Lovely corner table with pleasing atmosphere. The food was delicious & Ian, our server, was charming, sweet, & efficient. I'll be back!
The service was first-rate and the food was outstanding! The lobster frittata and Not Brown were worth driving 3 hours each way to eat :)
Our server was efficient and pleasant and the food was wonderful.
Very limited menu - three salads, five entrees. Not vegetarian-friendly.
PRO: The food was very good, my steak (steak and eggs) was exceptional. My wife's quiche was also very good.
CON: Our coffee was very weak. Our waitress gladly replaced it but something is wrong here. Our original seating was in a booth where the cold air blasted down on our heads, we moved to a table. It was still a bit cold in the restaurant.
The staff weren't very attentive. I had a problem getting their attention a couple of times while they were within view over in the corner chatting.
I've always enjoyed Winston's, so chose it for a Saturday night family dinner when my children came to town for Easter. I knew it would be a great meal in a low-key setting. The two toddlers were made welcome and their needs were accommodated cheerfully. Our dinners were excellent and service was as well. It was a satisfying experience for all of us.
I had ask if the Grilled Chicken Salad was chicken salad and the gnetleman told me yes, so that is what i was expecting. Instead I got stripped of grilled chicken. Also overheard a waiter tell another table about the chocolate cake layered with orange filling so we ordred that for dessert and i received a piece of chocolate cake with a drop of orange on top It was good just not what i was expecting.
My wife and I went to Winstons a number of years ago and based on that excellent experience we decided to take our visiting daughter there for a nice meal. It turned out to be a poor choice.
Service was not great and compared to the last visit where we were attended by several cheerful and helpful waitstaff this was a major disappointment.
The food was OK but not great. The best thing we had was the "Not Hot Brown" as an appetizer. I ordered the "Mojo Risn" which was a $39 seafood dish. It was served in a plastic bag which was not visually appealing at all. The lobster in the dish was completely overcooked and it was welded to the plastic. It appeared to me that this dish was simply microwaved in the bag.
There were only 4-5 tables occupied and by the time we finished dinner at 8:30 pm on a Saturday evening we were the only patrons left in the place. That should have been telling enough.
I will not go back to Winstons again.
Winston's is a gem on the Sullivan University campus! With extremely well-prepared, high end dishes, it can get a little pricey, but is certainly worth it for a special occasion.
Had a great lunch on Valentine's Day. Food was great and the service was fantastic.
After hearing so many positives about Winston's we decided to try it, but were disappointed in the quality of food. Food was served lukewarm (Spinach crepes) and a Phillipino noodle dish was try and bland. Fresh bread was very good. Desserts looked tasty though we did not have any. Our server was not attentive, didn't check back with us, also did not bring sweetener after asking him twice. We know these are students, but better teaching would help that situation. There are many excellent restaurants in Louisville and Winston's is going to have to step up their game if they intend to compete.
Staff struggled with service. We noticed other diners who arrived long after we did were being served before we were. Our waiter came to our table and said our order had been dropped (?) and had to take it again. To his credit, he offered us a discount. However we noticed several meals being delivered to wrong tables and we were delivered the wrong entrée and dessert. We'll give them a pass - they are students after all.
Food was exceptional - which made up for the service misses. We'll definitely give them another go.
Loved the fried oyster appetizer. Seafood mix entree needs smaller pieces of seafood.
Winston's, on the campus of Sullivan University, is a wonderful place to dine. Students are paired with master chefs to make magic happen in the kitchen, so it is a win-win for everyone.
Lovely spot, friendly staff, excellent food, was surprised to find only one vegan offering (soup of the day).
Winston's changes their menu each quarter which is nice. My wife is a particular diner and only eats chicken or turkey. When I went on the website on 1/22/2015 before our dinner on 1/24 they had a stuffed pan roasted chicken breast that sounded like it would be right up my wife's alley. I though since we were already over 3 weeks into the new year the menus were updated. Man I was wrong she ended up being able to only eat a Caesar salad with a piece of chicken they had prepared from lunch that day (it wasn't reheated or anything and she still liked it). I try to go out of my way for my wife and plan dinners around what suites her tastes so when I thought I found a diamond in the rough, I was upset to see it was just a cubic zirconia. I would still go back there again but would want to make sure the menu is what I think it is first.
simply, food, service, bar were all excellent. everyone at the table commented with amazement about some part of their meal
Winston's is a great place for a quiet dinner with GREAT food selections prepared to perfection.
I had never heard of Winston's Restaurant before my husband found it through Open Table. I admit I was highly skeptical when I found out it was associated with Sullivan University's Culinary program. Wow! Was I ever impressed. The decor, ambiance, menu selection, Sirius radio playing quietly, the friendliness of the employees/servers and the most delicious meal I believe I have ever eaten. It was amazing. The occasion was our 33rd wedding anniversary. It was hands down the most enjoyable anniversary meal we've had. There was no pretentiousness at all, just a delicious, elegantly prepared and appointed meal that could rival any 5 Star restaurant in Louisville, maybe other cities as well, I just don't travel much. I hope to return for another memorable meal.
One other note, there wasn't' any part of the meal that wasn't perfect, in looks, temperature or taste.
Great date night with my sweetie! Food and service were great. Quiet place for dinner and unwind a long week
The atmosphere was relaxing and quiet. The wait staff made sure your drinks were constantly refilled and your needs met. Will visit again to try other dishes that looked and sounded delicious. Everyone in our party was pleased with their meal and service.
This would be a great place for the ladies/groups to have lunch.
This was my first time to visit Winston's. My grandfather had not visited you in almost 9 years. He could not believe how nice everything was and quiet. I enjoyed the atmosphere, food and service. My grandfather is 96 years old. We were dealing with a walker, his feebleness, and hearing aids due to hearing loss. It is hard to find a place that gives us an atmosphere that does not take from our conversation. The staff was very helpful to me. The food was fabulous. A great find for me. I have lots of out of town guests. I plan to bring them in for dining. Thank you
I love Winston's, either solo or with friends. You're always welcomed happily & treated like a valued guest. The staff is top-notch professional, yet warm and friendly; you never feel like you're a "job" to them. Nick is the best server i've encountered here or at any other restaurant i've visited this year; he's the perfect balance of attentiveness, food knowledge, and friendliness. Mary the hostess (manager?) is always very gracious and worth mentioning for her warmth and quiet supervision of the restaurant! And then there's the food! I try to get something different each time i come here, and am never disappointed: the beef cuts are obviously superior quality, needing no sauces for embelishment. & you must do the sunday brunch!
Our lunch was delicious (the Cuban sandwich) but the dessert really made the experience memorable (for a chocola-holic!) We ordered the chocolate cake with orange butter cream. It was great, not sweet, an overall great chocolate flavour with a butter cream that was not overpowering. One of our friends ordered the 'Not brown' and had never eaten something like it, so unusual. He also ordered the cheese cake and even that was out of this world, so light and airy, not your regular dense cheesecakes.
Both desserts were artfully displayed worth a picture (first time ever).
Thanks for a great experience.
