At Wing Lei, rising star chef Ming Yu masterfully blends the flavors of China with Western technique to create a singularly delicious cuisine. Its just one delectable reason this is the only Chinese restaurant in North America to be recognized with the prestigious Forbes Five-Star Award. The seduction begins as you enter this exotic space, dressed in glimmering glass, tiger onyx, mother-of-pearl and gold accents. The décor, with its curved lines and rich gold accents, is meant to evoke the idea of 1930’s Shanghai. Every inch of this restaurant has been meticulously planned and lovingly crafted, from the ultra-plush, deep tapestry chairs and to the gold-tipped black chopsticks that grace the table settings. Large picture windows look onto a charming outdoor garden, replete with two 100-year old pomegranate trees. Despite all of the grandeur, the haute Chinese menu remains the focus, with its luxurious mix of Cantonese, Shanghai and Sichuan specialties.

We had eaten at Wing Lei a couple of years ago, and decided to revisit this special dining spot at Wynn & Encore on our last evening in Las Vegas. The broad menu offers plenty of options, and there were also some specials explained. We decided on a trio of appetizers that included a Shrimp Toast, an Avocado & Crab circular cake, and another tasty bite. Before that, a small lagniappe of caviar, crab, watercress on toast was presented -- and disappeared, putting a smile on our faces. For the entree, we ordered the Peking Duck (a half order, not on the menu, but accessible) to share. The crispy skinned duck was carved table side: some duck and green onions wrapped into three crepes for each of us, and a bowl of a dark, thick sauce; the waiter then explained the remaining duck would be chopped up in the kitchen and returned to us. Watch out for the bones! We did a fair job of finishing the bird. And a small cheesecake with a candle came to light the birthday girl's face. Following that, they still offered a metal pedestal with small chocolates and pastries. You'll be pampered at Wing Lei with servers in white gloves making sure your every need is attended to. And ladies, your purses will be resting on their own special seat next to your chair. How the waitstaff has to dance in, and around, the purse rests is amazing. NOTE: Next to us, a Chinese couple ordered Red Snapper dish that had a beautiful presentation. It made me want to book another night in Vegas, just to try that fish dish. Beautiful decor. The music suites the setting, too. You can carry on a conversation without having to strain your vocal chords. Try Wing Lei's comfortable dining room for a special, or any occasion.

A very good meal that will impress anyone you bring. The only knock is that the service was slightly inconsistent with our drink order taking more time than it did for them to take our order which left us sitting without drinks or food for quite some time.

Great ambience and service. I felt the prices were a bit high. One dish for example was the spring roll. Tasty, though the portion was really minimal with more dipping sauces than spring roll. I asked for still water and should of said tap as I paid dearly for my Fiji water.

I came to Wing Lei expecting to be disappointed. The menu had several staples of Chinese cuisine but at significantly higher prices than usual. I was further put on edge by a telephone call from their staff "reminding" me that dress was business casual so I needed a collar and no open toed shoes. However, upon arrival my reservations were quickly dismissed. We were shown a table in the front corner of the restaurant at the edge of the main dining room. The dining area was bright and open, but still fostered a quiet stillness perfect for intimate conversation. The staff complemented this atmosphere with there diligent but unobtrusive attention to our dining needs.
We started the evening with the Wing Lei sampler which came with shrimp toast, ribs and a crab salad. The shrimp toast was a hit with my wife and I, but the ribs and crab salad were strong as well. The crab was fresh and blended well with the sweetness of the mango. The ribs were good, but ribs just can not be eaten with a fork and knife. I felt uncouth, but had no choice but to pick the rib up and eat it barehanded.
My wife and I shared the hot and sour seafood soup next. The soup had a nice mild flavor and the seafood had a clean and fresh flavor. For our entrees we shared the garlic beef and sampan prawns. The garlic beef was amazing! It was so tender we cut it with a butter knife. I generally do not like beef tenderloin as it has less flavor than most cuts but the garlic punched it up nicely. The prawns were the big surprise to me though. It was battered and fried then served dry with diced jalapenos as an accompaniment. The batter was not heavy, but instead was light and crispy. The jalapeno heat was there but not overpowering.
In the end I was so happy I had not cancelled my reservation. It will definitely get another visit when I am back in Vegas.
