What happened to the Wine Cask? This has been one of our go-to restaurants in Santa Barbara for fine dining. But something has changed. The food was average at best. The waiter got our order wrong twice. No real apology was forthcoming. The prices are at the upper level of restaurants in Santa Barbara but not commensurate with the quality of the food and service. Strikingly, the restaurant was more than half empty on a beautiful evening with a concert at the Lobero a short walk away—I.e. the restaurant should have been filled with concert goers. I don’t get it—something weird is going on. Don’t let the Wine Cask drift—it’s too important to Santa Barbara.
This is our favorite restaurant in Santa Barbara. Exquisitely prepared food, great wine list and informed service.
It was recommended to have the ribeye and that it was really lean and no gristle. Well for all three of us it was full of fat. I only had about 15-20% of meat the rest was fat and everyone else in the party said the same thing. We also ordered the octopus and although it was cooked well it was extremely salty. Overall we were all extremely disappointed with the food. The music started out very loud but was later adjusted to a more normal level but the service was fabulous!
We had the tasting menu and it was AMAZING!! Very creative dishes with marvelous flavors - a real world class restaurant
Make sure you all for the tasting menu with wine pairing. Absolutely fantastic meal. Over the top service. Best restaurant in Santa Barbara by far.
Great for a quiet, romantic dinner for two. The food was delicious and the service was excellent!
This restaurant is an excellent date night option. The decor has dark woods and rich textures to give that old mission style feel with minimal pendant lighting. There is a patio separating two sides of the restaurant where you can dine as well. My fiancé and I ordered the chicken and lamb entrees and could not be happier. The meat was tender and full of flavor. The combination of flavors was outstanding from the chorizo in the brown rice to the subtle curry paste and tender carrots made the chicken outstanding. The lamb dish did not disappoint either with perfectly cooked sweet potato the beautifully cooked lentils just a hint of mint. We were floored by the excellent service and welcoming demeanor of all the staff. We will definitely come back for another decadent dining experience.
WONDERFUL SERVICE AND TERRIFIC FOOD -- PLUS WE COULD ACTUALLY HEAR EACH OTHER TALK!
Wow everything was delish and service excellent. Omg the bread!
Our meal started off well—great bottle of wine, tasty appetizers. Then we were ignored for a long time between courses. When our main dishes came out, one was wrong. When it was finally corrected, there was no apology. The main dishes, duck and scallops, were not as good as the first course and had clearly been sitting. Then we were ignored again for a long time—no checking in, no water refills. By the time they got back to us to offer dessert, we were so annoyed, we just got our check and left. Wound up having dessert and after dinner drinks back at our hotel. Would not recommend.
We had a great dining experience, the food is delicious, portions are just right and the flavor combinations work well.
The service is great , very attentive and accommodating. The ambiance and the venue is so charming & cozy.
I will definitely come back the next time I’m in SB.
Highly recommend the chef’s tasting with wine pairings. Amazing!
Loved our evening at the Wine Cask!
Our food was amazing. The ambience was perfect for an anniversary. We sat outside with our two fur babies and it was very relaxing - they can be high strung when there is too much stimulation. It was perfect. Thank you.
This was an early Mother’s Day celebration and we had always wanted to go to the Wine Cask so we figured it was the perfect occasion. It did not disappoint. So many restaurants in SB are somewhat crowded/stuffy. The Wine Cask was elegant with high ceilings. The noise level was just right, the service was outstanding and the food...wow. I would consider ourselves “foodies” and we all tried something different. All of the entrees were wonderful but my 11 year old son was the winner with the pork shank. The duck breast was also delicious and the scallops per my husband, were great. We are Greek so trust us when we say the octopus appetizer was spot on fantastic. It melted in our mouths. The wine list was wonderful as well. We even saved room for dessert which ended our night there with a bang. We look forward to going back very soon.
Everything was perfect! We will definitely be back.
I do not think there could have been a finer experience in all aspects of the experience....location, atmosphere, drinks, food, service...all was to perfection and all 4 of us felt the same way.

As always, we had a great dinner and the perfect waiter, Nuri
From the moment we walked in, our entire experience was carefully looked after by the maitre'd and our waiter. The ambience was absolutely wonderful and we sat by the wine bottles in the main dining room, which did not entirely insulate noise from the restaurant or club next door, which is the only complaint we had about the entire dinner.
My wife had the asparagus, broccoli, and leek soup and I had the ahi tuna sashimi, which were exquisite. We ordered the porterhouse for two, which was cooked to perfection, and the Nutella cheesecake was delightful. Our cocktails were perfectly balanced and refreshing, and the Wine Cask Red Syrah we had with the main course paired amazingly well with the steak. Our waiter made sure to see our every need was met and we were pleasantly surprised by a sparkling Chardonnay as this dinner marked my wife and my anniversary. That little treat capped off everything and my wife and I both agreed that the dinner was practically perfect. If we have an opportunity to dine here again, we will be back.
Limited menu so was expecting the food to be amazing, thought it was good. For the price would have expected better. Service was outstanding, lighting is great, and good place for a quiet evening out. Just didn't fee the menu offered enough choices and all of our meals were ok. Now the deserts are another thing, they are outstanding.
Great food an ambiance. Service was attentive. Lots to choose from. Would highly recommend this restaurant.
Scallops were excellent. Pork shake a little dry. Service very good.
Husband’s 1st bday gift to me this year.
One of the best meals I've had in a long long time! Everything was impeccable, from the chive butter for the bread, to the amazing wasabi mashed potatoes! Don't miss this outstanding restaurant nestled away downtown!
Great food and service!
I did not have a great experience at The Wine Cask. I've been there several times. This time, the hostess (who seemed to be the owner?) looked right through me when I arrived and began a conversation with the people behind me. I was traveling alone so this was quite unsettling. After being seated, I waited, in a deserted dining room, while the hostess chatted up her friends and a waiter completely ignored me. I never did get to hear about the specials, though my salad was good. The Crudo, however, was very ordinary. I will not go there again. I have had a much better experience at Intermezzo, their casual eatery next door and will go there instead.
Fabulous evening! Delicious food, great service and atmosphere
The Wine Cask was one of the first restaurants we visited when we were first dating, 21 years ago. It was romantic then and remains one of favorite places. We always enjoy a unique dining experience there. The excellent food is matched by the ambiance and the service — always welcoming, never stuffy. We just celebrated our 21st wedding anniversary there and it was as wonderful as our first date. We look forward to sharing many more anniversaries at The Wine Cask.
We went here with my parents who were visiting from out of town and they loved it. The food and service were very good. I eat a vegan diet and the cook made me something special —creative and delicious!
The food - exceptional. I had a local SB black cod which could not have been more perfect. My wife had the duck, which was equally perfectly prepared
The wine selected for my wife - excellent suggestions by the server whose attn to detail was stellar
And the cheesecake deserves to be in the “Hall of Fame” — I don’t know what is beyond best, exceptional, incredible, but whatever it is, this cheesecake defines it
This is a very special occasion restaurant
Lovely as usual. Only thing missing was a fireplace table but we did book late
The food was excellent . The waiter was very knowledgeable about the local wines and the menu . Great bread and butter which in my experience is always a good indication of what the quality of the food will be .
The food was delicious and our waiter was very knowledgeable about which wines would pair with the food we choose.
Used to come here often, then it fell off our Radar. Came back during Restaurant Week SB and again yesterday. Chef that had left has returned and the Chicken main dish is exceptional. Only item in 2 visits of several people, is one main arrived 'not hot', just barely warm., while others were all perfect. Unusual?! Mentioned it to waiter and I'll pay attention to this next time we go. They did offer to redo it, but I declined.
Delightful in every way. We always recommend!
We had a wonderful dinner-chicken and black cod-
and the desserts-chocolate cake and berry tart- were amazing. Even the bread was the best we’ve had in ages. Our every request was handled and their wine list is well rounded.
We’ll be back!
Great place for dinner. We had the five course dinner with wine pairing. It was a wonderful experience.
Top notch service!
Amazing food at exceptional price since it was restaurant week.
Will definitely return.
We went for the Santa Barbara Restaurant week. Pre-Fix menu (starter, main and dessert). All the food was delish and the presentation was beautiful. $25 corkage fee is pricey though.
Overall we had a great time. Server was very friendly. Wine was great. The potatoes leek soup was fantastic and my husband loves his cod, but I didn’t like my lamb Alfredo. The dessert was great.
