Bowl & Plate at White Shallot is a Vietnamese restaurant located in the Winchester Shopping Center. Formerly known as just The White Shallot, Bowl & Plate is dedicated to serving the very best Pho and Vietnamese grilled dishes possible to its many guests. The restaurant is simply decorated, but aesthetically pleasing with white tablecloths and bright red flowers adorning each table.
Ordering at Bowl & Plate is simple, on the left side of the menu is the Pho selections where guests can work their way down the menu checking boxes for which ingredients they would like included. The right side of the menu follows the same concept, but this time with ingredients for the large and hearty grill plates. Each ingredient for both sides is accompanied by a price, so guests are welcome to spend as much or as little as they would like.
Very sorry to see that the restaurant is going to change, but I am certain that the new concept will be fabulous. Chef Li is changing the direction of the restaurant away from French/Vietnamese and going strictly Vietnamese. Her grilled shrimp and beef with vermicelli noodle dish is truly fantastic! A must try! Looking forward to when Chef Li reopens and trying the new food! Plan on being back as soon as she reopens!
Pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food. We had escargot and fresh rolls for appetizers. Escargot was very good. Entrees were Filet de Beouf and Duck L'Orange. Both were amazing. Duck was cooked just right. Completing the meal we had for dessert Banana Fosters and Profiteroles.
The soup and the mussels were spectacular. The beef dish and fries were tasty, but average-fries tasted like they'd sat a couple of minutes before serving. Service all evening seemed slower than usual. Maybe a new waiter still getting the hang of things. Overall a pleasant evening, but not quit as good as this restaurant usually does it. We will be back, since this seemed like a slightly off night vs a real miss.
We just discovered a French/Vietnamese restaurant right around the corner and we are glad we did! The food was delicious and the service was great. I had the salmon from the French side and my husband had a beef bowl from the Vietnamese side. We were both pleased. The pear pudding for dessert was wonderful.
This was a truly delightful experience. Outside, just another restaurant in a row building. Inside is nicely appointed. Small but cozy and the waiters (2) were really hustling to serve. Overall great food experience and reasonably priced. Try it, you'll like it!
My husband and I and two friends had dinner there on a Sat night. The place was crowded, with patrons leaving yet soon to be filled by new comers. The staff was great, always polite and wearing a smile. Good was delicious. Perhaps the only thing that bothered us a bit was the noise level. No one was shouting but for some reason, the overall noise level made it hard to listen to people talking at the same table. In any event, we all enjoyed the evening.
White Shallot is a tiny place in an otherwise unpromising-looking shopping center, but once you enter the service is serenely adroit, the food is divine,-- imaginative, well prepared, and quickly served. Despite the tiny space the staff accommodated our party of ten people with ease, and the menu was perfection: Asian delights for the adventurous, French classics with lots of meat for the guys, but enticing vegetarian and vegan options for those who don't eat meat. We asked to see the chef, small lady whose name I missed, who creates miracles in a miniscule kitchen. I cannot think of a better dinner I've had in this area. Every bit as good as Arcadia or Papillon, but less expensive, and with a bit more panache...
The menu is split in half with a French half and a Vietnamese half. We had samples from both. French food you kind of expect to be good if done at all well, and the dishes we tried were very well executed. But the Vietnamese dishes we tried were what was special about White Shallot, as these were remarkable (when compared to usual Vietnamese fare). The ambiance was OK but not high end. I was impressed that there were multiple children present (OK for us). Our waiter was on the inexperienced side, very attentive in the early stages when the restaurant was less crowded, less so as the place filled up. There was a mix up in the desert course which was irritating but was rectified.
We are never disappointed in their food. Chef Lan is very creative with the menu and her specials are also spectacular!
This place is no-nonsense delicious; it hasn't been renovated like some super-trendy fusion place in the Mission but seriously everything I've tried here has been simply fantastic. I can't recommend it enough. One of the better (if not _the_ stealthiest) restaurants in the South Bay. It doesn't try too hard either: it's just straightforward and tasty food.
Terrible place. The food is below average, service is terribly slow. The place is also small, if you are tall you may not have enough space to sit comfortably at the table either.
Food was just OK...would not go back. Only 1 server, the server was very nice. Service was very slow and only 6 tables were occupied.

waiter was not knowledgeable about the wine or the beer (he was really young). food was amazing. i had the salmon (best salmon I've had). I would say overall, it was just okay.
White Shallot is always wonderful. The food here is fresh and flavorful. This restaurant is a hidden gem and one that we always recommend to our friends. Chef Li is very talented and we try to patronize this restaurant as often as possible. Try the incredible ice creams!
From the reviews we knew not to expect a fancy place. The restaurant is in a very uninspiring strip mall. But it's perfectly fine as long as you're not expecting romantic ambience. We sat in a booth and it felt quite private. The food was excellent. I had the vegan spring rolls and the vegan lemongrass tofu. They had multiple vegetarian and vegan options, although more in the Vietnamese section than the French. (OpenTable menu mentioned gratin but they don't have it anymore. Ratatouille instead) The lemongrass had a lovely and spicy flavor. My husband had Vietnamese soup and bouillabase. The soup was fine but he absolutely loved the bouillabase. We got the profitoroles for dessert. They were tasty. Will definitely be going back and am looking forward to trying more dishes. Probably better than half the restaurants in Santana Row and quite reasonable prices.
This place is in a strip mall of Stevens Creek so don't go in expecting some hyper-trendy decor; it's pretty straightforward and frankly it doesn't look like much. But the servers are great and the food is simply fantastic. It's not necessarily a place to take to impress people, but the cuisine makes this an immediate favorite of mine and I look forward to coming back time and time again.
The price is fair considering both the quality and the quantity of the food: I would actually say it approaches inexpensive for what you get. I left very full and very satisfied!
The restaurant is much smaller than expected. The service and food are first rate. My meal with one glass of wine, soup, entree, and dessert was about $57, including tax and gratuity.
The menu is divided into half French and half Vietnamese. There's a couple of vegetarian options, seafood, lamb, chicken, and beef choices. I look forward to going again soon.
We have been here often ,but this visit was under staffed and noisy. I hope it is not their new normal.
Dinner and service were very good. Had both French and Vietnamese dishes, all were done very well, including desserts of yummy chocolate ice cream, bananas foster, passion fruit cream brûlée. Shaking beef, beef and shrimp vermicelli , calamari , vegetable terrine very tasty.
Lunch on another occasion, food was still very good, service was not. Inexperienced server (?), argued with us on which order of food we had given, had to get own menus, service was just not up to par. This was unusual, as service has always been much better. Will go back again and look for another server.

White Shallot is an unassuming restaurant in a strip mall but the food is fantastic!! Menu highlights: sea bass clay pot, Shaking beef, beet salad, all delicious! We had a late reservation; service was a little rushed but server was nice. Nice place to have so close to home.
The food here is always fresh and wonderful. The grilled shrimp and beef is a great choice, as is the croque madame. Chef Le is truly gifted when it comes to her home-made ice creams. Her lavender-infused ice creams are my personal favorites. This restaurant is a neighborhood gem and I highly recommend that you try this place!
We haven't ordered anything from the Vietnamese menu and those might have been better. Most of the other guests were eating Vietnamese food.
In any case, not worth the time and money for the French food.
This visit we had beef pho, vegtable gratin, and poulet 'estragon with escargot as our appetizer. The escargot was very good. The vegatable gratin was not good to look at and only fair tasting with tomato paste smeared on the top? The pho was bland but general okay and the chicken was fair but not accompagnied with any vegatables or anything. The waiter was all by himself and was slammed. But he did his best with help from one other man who wasn't a waiter. We normally think WS is good but not all the dishes are good, you have to choose carefully. However, the service is good when there are enough servers. And the food comes quickly enough.
Our server, Mike, was outstanding. We were celebrating a special occasion with friends. Start to finish, we were there for nearly three hours -- appetizers, wine, entrees, more wine, dessert. We were never rushed. Interactions were warm and friendly. The food was delicious. And, unlike many other restaurants, even of this caliber, it was quiet enough we could carry on conversations and actually hear each other. It was a wonderful evening and will stick with us for a long time.
Mike was our server and he was amazing start to finish. His suggestions were home runs and he was humourous and accommodating. All of our dishes were mouth watering. From the shrimp cake to my saumon aux amandes and my boyfriend's hot pot. And the homemade profiteroles were some of the best I've had. It is a small, intimate restaurant and the acoustics are such that you can definitely hear the chatter of others but we were chattering away as well so I didn't mind. This place is definitely becoming part of our regular rotation. Great open table find!
This restaurant has by far the worst service I have ever experienced. It took 40 minutes to bring Coke, waiters excuse was that they only have one chef and he is in charge of the drinks. Yet I saw at least three people working in the kitchen. Half of our group got their order half didn't, after being there for 95 minutes we asked for a check and left with half of the people not receiving main course. Appetizers were nothing special. As a result family dinner turned in to nightmare with half of the group being hungry. Waiter told us that he can't do anything because he doesn't want to lose his job and will not complain to the kitchen. As if it was our problem. Open table should not have restaurants like that in their rotation.
First the food...our spring roll, and squid appetizers were both fresh and tasty. The squid was deliciously grilled to perfect texture and served with sweet chili and ginger sauces for dipping that really enhanced the flavor of the squid. My husband ordered the duck curry for his entree, he enjoyed the flavors and portion size but prefers more spicy heat in his curry. I ordered the sea bass clay pot which was excellent- the sea bass was cooked perfectly and the pork belly slab sharing the clay pot added a nice depth of flavor to the savory/sweet dish. The portion size was just right. We had a choice of jasmine or brown rice with each entree which are nice options. There is a varied wine list with several choices that compliment the food nicely. Also, a couple of beer cocktails are offered that we had never seen so my husband ordered one (Panache) and our server was nice enough to bring the other (Monaco) gratis.
Now the rest....Our server was friendly and pleasant, he was able to answer any questions we asked about the menu and obviously cares about the restaurant and chef/owner. Unfortunately, White Shallot has no atmosphere or ambiance and a lack of decor in what could easily be a cozy an/or romantic setting with just a little creativity and tender loving care (the carpeting should be removed immediately). I hope the owner takes notice because the food is delicious but right now there's no case to make White Shallot a destination for a night out on the town.
Nice Place with good French/Vietnamese fusion food, simple presentation, nothing fancy. Usually tables available. Tried only French part of the menu - it was good.

Unique menu, but portions just average. Salmon was great. Bouillabaisse was not. Fun to have so many choices. Good drink menu too. Would go back for special occasions, but not often. Not many French places around, so good to have this one. The place
Took forever for food to arrive despite only 1 other table in the restaurant and this group has already finished their main course when we arrived. Only 1 waiter for the whole place and hard to get his attention when the restaurant started to get busy after a while. Another long wait for the bill!
This was the best meal we have had on a long time. Better than any Santana Row had to offer. Mika out waiter was fabulous! Thank you White Shallot.
The atmosphere at the restaurant was pleasant, but our meals and service were less so. The pork chops were leathery, and the carrots with the duck entree were overly doused with gran marnier. The servers seemed harried, yet completely inattentive to our table.
I hate writing a positive review because I really dont want everyone coming here to eat at this great restaurant! My wife and I have been coming here for a couple years and have never had a bad meal. We bring friends and family here and they end up doing the same with their friends and family. Great place, great food, great staff. Highly suggested, hopefully they will still keep that small place charm as they grow. The restautant seems to be more and more filled each visit. Great news for them but I think our secret is out ;)
Our server Mike is personable and professional. We enjoy dining at white Shallot on Friday evenings because Mike is working. Chef Lan is amazing. She always takes the time to visit with her customers and prepare special desserts for them. She cooks with love and her food shows it! White Shallot is our go-to restaurant when friends are in town, for special occasions and whenever we want a delicious meal. Chef's specials shouldn't be missed!
