West Cafe Ratings and Reviews
Unfortunately, we're entering the last week of West Café. We have found this to be an excellent place in which to hold meetings every couple of months or so - we gather from both the metro area and the south Willamette valley - and have always enjoyed the food, the service and the atmosphere.
Best wishes to everyone as they enter a new phase in their lives, and thanks for wonderful evenings!
We have been to this restaurant before and it was fabulous. This time 4 out 4 meals were absolutely terrible. Not edible. The smell of bad seafood was present the minute the food was served. Our server kept apologizing for the delay in our service and meals. She did have time to actually sit at a couple guests tables while we waited for our drinks. They were served after the meals were delivered. I will try this place again for many reasons. 1: The owner is delightful and works hard. 2: My previous meals were perfect.
We tried West Cafe for the first time; it may be our only visit. Almost to a person, reviews indicated friendly, attentive service. We had the opposite experience. They came to my attention via Open Table. We live 30 miles away but frequent the Portland area about 2-3 times a month, checking out eateries with good service and food reviews. On entering the restaurant, someone at the bar hollered, 'we'll be with you in a minute' -- there was no greeter or hostess up front. So I stood there for a couple of minutes, then a young gal walked up & asked if I needed a table. "Yes, my husband's parking the car," I have a reservation on Open Table. From there, she didn't utter a greeting, just silently led me to a table, explained the extra sheet was the day's specials and left.
About 5 minutes later, she returned, again NO greeting. I explained this was OUR FIRST VISIT -- Again, no WELCOME, no Hello, just ZIP. Things got worse from there.
We eventually ordered after she delivered beverages. Husband ordered a waffle, I ordered the scramble special of the day. They brought his order then mine- but they brought me the wrong entree (delivered by another waitress). When I explained it wasn't what I ordered, she replied, "Well I didn't take your order so I don't know what happened. I'll get you what you wanted." What happened next has NEVER HAPPENED! The original non-communicative waitress returned with the same incorrect dish, a brunch menu and said, "Didn't you order the 1st item on this list?!?" Whoa! I replied, "No, i ordered the 2nd item on the list." She did NOT apologize, just turned around & left. OMG!
Eventually, I got my entree. It was delicious but nearly impossible to "enjoy" ~ it felt as though I was the one who hadn't listened PROPERLY. And when we left, NO ONE said "Thanks for visiting, have a nice day, ZIP! Our waitress looked right at me as we left, just stared BLANKLY. Truly, one of the strangest dining experiences of our lives!
What a little gem! The wait staff was so friendly and helpful. The menu was creative and had something for everyone. Lots of good brunch items, but it was nice to have all the regular lunch items also available. The specials were terrific. Portion sizes were perfect- not too little, not too huge. All of our meals tasted like fancy home cooked food- no over-use of oil or butter. Definitely stop in!
Very lovely staff in this quiet, comfortable restaurant. I had the hanger steak, which was tender and well-seasoned, and came with serviceable sides. The arugula and the greens served prior to my main dish were not as fresh as I would have expected. I would come back for group dinners, a nice dinner out with a friend, or as an option I could take my parents to.
it was mother's day and we waited an hour and a half before asking about our order which they checked on and let us know that they had lost it. They brought us one piece of banana bread to split while we waited. Any good restaurant would have comped part or all of the meal. Food was nothing special.
We were underwhelmed by the success of the vegetarian options this time. The soup and the special vegetarian entree were both bland. Our dining companion, who ordered the sole special, was very happy with her meal. Desserts--key lime pie and lemon sorbet--were both excellent, as usual. The presentation of the sorbet inside a frozen, carved-out lemon was charming.
The West Cafe is a great spot on the south end of downtown with an extensive menu including small plates. The owners are great people and are very welcoming. I also enjoy the weekend jazz groups, especially The Originals which play on the second Saturday of the month. Great jazz paired with a fun, varied menu.
I made a reservation for 13 people at the West Cafe to celebrate my nephews graduation from OCI. They called me the day of the party to confirm, and were prepared for us when we came. The service was exceptional....relaxed, attentive, friendly and patient. The waiter asked us if we we wanted separate checks for the several family groups that were there, and happily and quickly sorted the bills out. The food was very tasty, and portions were satisfying There was only one appetizer that someone thought was okay, but not wonderful. Everyone else raved!
My family is very diverse in their food preferences, but everyone found something that they enjoyed. I got thanks from several people for making this choice. One said there were " good vibes " in the restaurant. Oh, and as an added part of the experience, there was I've music that was just the right type of music and volume to enhance the ambiance. I wholeheartedly recommend West Cafe!
We especially want to recommend the desserts at West Cafe. We are huge fans of the key lime pie, which is on the regular dessert menu, but this time we ordered one of the dessert specials, coconut cream pie. It was divine, rich and creamy, with toasted coconut on the whipped cream, and the surprise of a dark chocolate cookie crust.
As always, a wonderful meal and visit at West Cafe. This occasion was a friend's 62nd birthday and we had a delicious meal and yummy coconut cream pie for dessert, with a candle for her slice of pie. Sean and Doug do an outstanding job and I am so fortunate to live just a block away from West Cafe.
One of our best experiences at West Cafe, which is in our neighborhood. The service was particularly good, friendly and attentive without being obtrusive. The carrot cauliflower bisque was creamy with a delicate flavor, the potatoes au gratin a sinful treat, and our friend's prawn special pronounced delicious. West Cafe has an excellent dessert menu and the key lime pie is a standout. Our only complaint is that the live music is too loud.
Good venue for before performances at performing arts center, art museum, historical society. We felt a little rushed in 4/8 meal. We had 6:00 p.m. reservations and performance was 7:30 - we barely made it. Staff was slow in taking our original drink order and also slow in taking dinner order. We already knew what we wanted, so it wasn't us taking time to deliberate.
It was entirely OK. It was tough finding a table for ten on short notice, with moderate (well, on the high side) prices and (essential for us) very quiet. They talk about 'comfort food' and that is really what it was. Nothing so fantastic that we must return, but all satisfactory. Service satisfactory, but we are generally turned off by "My name is ___ and I'll be your server this evening." "Whisper of salad" is a silly name for a pleasant enough plate of greens. The featured "crack cake" was decent enough, but one of our party, who had had the 'real thing' at Momofuku was not wildly impressed.
We met friends for lunch at West Cafe. The food and service was very good. We hadn't seen these friends for a while we wanted to be able to talk, enjoy a goodo meal together and not be rushed. West Cafe was great for this. The noise level was low so conversation was easy. A great place. We enjoyed it very much, and will return.
Arrived in the pouring rain and welcomed warmly, along with hanging up our wet clothes. Pleasant, but not overbearing waiter - helpful, enjoyable. Prompt gracious service. OUTSTANDING food - hard to choose from so many appealing things. Quiet except for the gentle background murmur of guests enjoying their meal. First time there - what a gem! Will definitely return - can't wait!
West Cafe has excellent food and wine. It is close to the Portland Art Museum, making it ideal of after an after Museum meal. The menu features a number of specials. This is definitely a farm to table restaurant. The highlight of our most recent meal was the service. We requested a particular pinot noir to pair with our meals and the manager went out of his way to bring us the last two bottles. He also gave excellent advice on the menu and kept the cafe open late for us.
Went for the music but found that to be by far the highlight of the evening. Service and kitchen problems led to a very long evening waiting for food and/or any kind of service. They were apologetic and the food was good but still they neglected to bring the salads and timing was horrible. Sadly no reason to give it another try
