West 29th Ratings and Reviews
Our first time at this restaurant and we were pleased. We were seated immediately (with reservation made earlier in the day); our server was excellent, water glasses kept filled up, drinks and appetizer served timely, and meals out after appetizer dishes were removed from table. The food was very good, although I thought the meals were a bit pricey. Husband's trout was delicious, slightly smoky tasting. My gorgonzola stroganoff was creamy with tasty mushrooms but the meat was tough. My friend's duck breast was delicious, with great roasted veges but the accompanying lentils were undercooked. All in all, I can't give an excellent rating because two of the three dishes were not 100% perfect. However, we would come to this restaurant again and try some other dishes.
I am hesitant to write a bad review for a meal on New Year's Eve because, like Valentine's Day, it is an impossible night to dine out. However . . . we had 5:30 reservations and when we arrived there were only 2 or 3 other tables seated. Even by the time we left at about 6:45 the restaurant was not full. Since it wasn't busy and they were at the beginning of service, I would have expected a lot more.
We have eaten here several times in the past year and that's why we recommended it to our friends that we were going to be dining out with. They will not be coming back. We likely will come back (sometime in the summer when it is nice and we can sit on the patio).
Out of the 5 entrees ordered, four of them arrived cold. The only one that arrived hot was a pasta dish so we are assuming all of our meals were waiting for the pasta to cook. Service was sloppy, albeit friendly. Two dishes were cleared almost uneaten and no one questioned why. Normally if a dish is cleared uneaten the server inquires if there was a problem. It took three attempts to get our checks right (we asked for two split checks).
It was a disappointing night.
That said, this place normally has really good food and service. The menu hasn't changed at all in the year and a half or so that we discovered this spot so we don't dine here often (we get a little bored with the menu) but generally enjoy everything we have tried. Except for the carrot-ginger soup. Don't even try it. There is no carrot flavor and no ginger flavor. It tastes like gravy soup to me.
I recommend trying this spot, but don't rely on it for a special occasion. They don't seem up to the task.
Our annual Christmas Eve dinner. Fourth straight year. Had the Filet Mignon special. It was nothing short of spectacular! Best steak I’ve had in a long, long time. Chef Corey Matthews is a genius. The butternut squash ravioli and gnocchi appetizers were the bomb. Prosecco. No dessert.
While this was not our first time at West 29th, it may be one of our more memorable experiences. We brought our family, who were visiting from out-of-state, for a nice meal out at West 29th. It was truly wonderful! When I made the reservations some time ago, I had asked if we could have a table near the fireplace. They had one set aside for us! With it being the holidays, everything was decorated beautifully, and added to the ambiance of the evening. The staff are always very kind, and this trip was no exception. The wine selection was fantastic, and we enjoyed appetizers, salad, and entrees, all of which were delightful. And the dessert was, truly, icing on the cake. (While it couldn't have been planned, it started to snow as we sat and enjoyed the wine and the fire...perfection!)
Highlights: Parisian-Style Gnocchi, Butternut Squash Ravioli, Soup, Seasonal Greens, Ratatouille Lasagna, Chocolate at West 29th Dessert.
Thank you for a great evening, and for being a highlight in our community! We will be back!
I like the ambiance of this restaurant - its a nice place to go to celebrate a special occasion. We went for sunday brunch - food was good, but nothing gourmet or outstanding, just good with reasonable prices. I love going here in the summer and fall and sitting in the outdoor patio areas. I wish they had more vegetarian choices.
Very nice, low-key, attractive place where we could actually have a conversation! The restaurant is warm and inviting. One of us enjoyed his entree very much, the other not so much, so 'mixed review' on the actual food. Nice deal on half-price bottle of wine on a Wednesday evening. Also, because it was our anniversary, our shared dessert was complimentary, which was a nice touch. Best of all was our waiter, Erin - she was also our waiter the last time we were there, and she's great - friendly and cheerful but unobtrusive and not the least bit pretentious.
The butternut squash ravioli appetizer was delicious. Vegetarian lasagna was also good, as was the bone-in pork chop. Pretty basic menu with a few creative dishes. We had the pumpkin roll for dessert, which was new for the season and also very tasty. Service was good.
I found this little up scale place about a year ago. I love coming here for special occasions with my wife. To me this place has the look and feel of 5 star restaurant without the 5 star price (i would rate this as median price range compared to other places). All I can say is that i love this place. Oh did i mention they have a great bar and know how to make a great old fashioned.
One of my Favorite spots to Eat around the Highlands is West 29th!!! Great food and good service. This is a neighborhood Gem for sure!! Good Prices allow for nice creative meals and good atmosphere with friends with out putting a burden on your wallet. Good service and a nice wine list too West 29th also makes great cocktails!
The food is truly amazing with a refreshing menu. Wait staff are always exceptional and make you feel like you are truly their favorite customer. During our last visit the bar was being used for an engagement party and the restaurant was packed. The noise level was high which we’ve never experienced before. This was a Saturday night and we usually come during the week. Wouldn’t keep us from coming back but just a note for anyone wanting a quiet/romantic Saturday evening dinner out.
