This visit to IMG for our anniversary was an excellent choice! Our waiter could not have been any better - from greeting us immediately to suggesting the perfect wine. Starting off with delicious crab cakes. My husband had the prime rib and raved about the side mac & cheese! I had the scallops & lobster - done perfectly. During dinner a solo guitarist played - this was a wonderful complement to our meal - replacing the usual restaurant sounds with "not too loud" music.
I would have given less stars but I have had awesome meals and amazing service at wendells but on Valentine's Day it was horrible. Our waiter was never to be found and when he did appear you would have to stop him as he would just try to cruise right on by our table. Our meal came out cool like it had been sitting in the window for several minutes before being served to the table. This is just not the service or experience anyone should receive especially when it's one of the most expensive restaurants in the area if not the most.
It was my 75th Birthday. We were celebrating it with friends. Everything was excellent - wine, salad, entrée and desert. The service was wonderful. Everything is a-la-cart, so it is an elegant expensive restaurant, not for the faint of heart. We had a great time.
We've been to Wendells numerous times in the past. It use to be an excellent 5 star restaurant but our last experience was terrible. The Caesar was not a Caesar salad, The crab-cakes were luke warm and the main coarse was luke warm. The service was extremely slow. They have quickly deteriorated from a 5 star to a mediocre 3 star. It's truly a shame!
The wife and I went for dinner and had a good time. The waiter was very helpful and they had a gentleman playing guitar in the front. His music was excellent. This restaurant is really great for dates or special occasions. The food was delicious and they don’t hold back on portions. Overall we enjoyed our experience at Wendell’s.
The reservation and seating processes were smooth. The 12 oz. prime sirloin was a bit overcooked; we had ordered medium well, and it was cooked well. The desserts (the New Year's Eve special and the Lavender Crème Brûlée) were good but not great. Our server, Alex B., was outstanding, both in terms of his attentiveness to our needs and his friendliness. The highlight of the dining experience was the guitarist who was playing. The location at Inn of the Mountain Gods was both convenient and beautiful, and I enjoy the "story" of the restaurant/resort. Overall, a very nice dinner experience.
We ate here 4july17 and it was delicious. We came back 30Dec17 with the same server and it was absolutely awful.
The food was late and cold when arrived. We ordered the filet which was tasteless and cold, the elk which was tough and cold, the crab legs which were good but cold and the stuffed shrimp which were cold and the rice was tasteless. When the food arrived the Mac and cheese side was missing. It arrived after we had finished and was returned.
We had read about the guitarist being loud but he was not playing in July when we were there. Dec 30 he was loud and arrogant. He was asked several times to turn down the volume and he never touched the dial. The manager came over and told us he was a well know guitarist and the guitarist was surprised by the request to turn down the music. We had to shout above the music and it ruined the evening. His music is suppose to be background and it felt like we were at a concert with the speaker in our ears.
We were so disappointed and will not return - EVER!!!
The wine list is mainstream selections you can find at a grocery store with 300 to 500% markup.
The beef can be better selected as my NY strip was not normal width, it was more round shape than lengthy and not prime from the texture and flavor.
The price on the food is above average and but the flavors lack the price value.
Overall it’s the only place to go for fine dining in the area
Wife and I went to Wendells to celebrate 52nd anniversary. We were seated immediately, our server, Scott, was very attentive and the food was very good. We have been to Wendells several times in the past and enjoyed each time but we're shocked at how much menu prices have increased.
I hadn't been to Wendell's in over a decade and I was pleasantly surprised with the level of service and the quality of the food. Clearly the management has made some positive changes over the last decade. The waitress had too many tables, and was frankly in the weeds. But still, she took our orders, answered questions, and delivered the meals with knowledge, skill, and professionalism. The setting was formal and elegant. The four of us found a great wine on their note-worthy wine list. We had a combination of seafood, red meats, and vegetables and everything was excellent. Of particular note were the crab legs, the mixed seafood cocktail, and the wedge salad. We highly recommend this restaurant considering the geographical context. This place is the best new American cooking within two hours drive.
"Fancy" restaurant located in large Inn of the Mountain Gods resort/hotel/casino in Ruidoso NM. Service/food qualilty in this expensive restaurant is always hit/miss. We went to both their Thanksgiving and Christmas buffet brunches this year and the service and food were night and day in quality. (Thanksgiving was fabulous, Christmas only so/so). Brunch is advertised as from starting time until 3:00 p.m., and exactly at 3 p.m. buffet service is stopped and dining room staff begins cleanup. Good guitarist. For nearly $150 for two people things should be a bit more carefully thought out and people who make reservations for later times in the schedule should be advised of service/buffet ending time. We saw people being seated at about 2:45. Bet they were disappointed. Beautiful location, good parking, fabulous views, clean. Not as smoky as it used to be in public areas but of course extremely smoky in casino area.
For brunch, Wendell's is a much different experience than what one would expect from a restaurant of this quality. It was akin to a coffee shop experience. The waitress was shrill, rude, and very abrupt. The kitchen staff has never heard of Eggs Florentine. The presentation of my friend's breakfast was bizarre - at best. It was impractical at worst. Her breakfast was served in a tiny, little, green vessel, rather than on a plate, and it was difficult for her to maneuver the food without getting it all over the table. The food itself was delicious. But the service, presentation, and knowledge in the kitchen was precarious. The management of the restaurant could ameliorate these flaws by sending the manager to a Four Seasons Hotel, for instance, and ordering brunch there to see what the experience should feel like. They would find a 180 degree difference. I do not think what exists now is what Wendell's is going for; it should be fixed.
I've been going to Wendells for over 5 years now and I've always had a great experience and great, delicious, handmade, great quality food. This visit was a dissapointment; the food was not of a high quality. The wontons were frozen from a package, not hand made. I ordered a $70+ porter house steak and received a $15 quality steak. It was cooked perfectly, however, the quality of the cut wan horrible and definitely NOT worth $70+. The dessert was also generic and was nothing special. In the past the food at Wendells had been excellent and this visit was EXTREMELY dissaponting and will not be returning. P.S. my most favorite item on the menu , Oysters Rockefeller , were taken off which made the experience more dissaponting.

Food was amazing. Absolutely amazing. After our meal I asked to meet the chef and was immediately ushered to the kitchen where I thanked them all for a great night and a perfect dinner, with my beautiful wife. I’ll be back again and again and again!!
This is an expensive restaurant, and no one wants to be served by a buffoon when buying a $500.00 dinner. The service was bizarre - at best. The waitress kept calling me, "Milady" which was weird and a bit off-putting; it was as though she had just left a renaissance fair. Further, she kept interrupting conversation to point out to us when she served or picked up plates from the wrong side, but she didn't notice when diners were missing cutlery after the first course. I had to recruit a knife from another table; our waitress was frequently missing when she should have been present (right after food is served, for instance). Also, it took her 10 minutes to acknowledge us at table when we arrived, and then it took her another 10 minutes to ask what we would like to drink! Then, it took another 5 minutes to get our wine. So, we waited 25 minutes before we even had a drink! Not what one expects at such a pricey restaurant. The chef made a special meal for me (because there are ZERO vegetarian options on the menu) and it was one of the most outstanding vegetarian meals I have ever tasted. Everyone else also immensely enjoyed their repasts; the food was phenomenal. The semi-massive wine list is very well chosen - there are so many great American wine options that it is difficult to choose. There was a classical guitarist and words fail me as to how good the music was - how talented this fellow is. This bit of the atmosphere was absolutely wonderful. They must be short-staffed; frequently there were tables missing table cloths for extended periods of time, and one of the lead guys in the restaurant was wearing a bright green t-shirt with his suit jacket instead of a tie, which was also strange. Overall, delicious food paired with marvelous wine and fantastic music, with a very bizarre dining theatre (except for the lovely live music) and a staff of hugely unprofessional people who don't seem to have ever been in a nice restaurant before.
Wendell's is a lovely restaurant but unfortunately the food quality is poor. We ordered the Sea Cakes as an appetizer and they tasted like they were thawed out...I've had better from the freezer section at the grocery store. The presentation was extremely poor, the plate was covered in sauce with 3 small cakes that were largely left uneaten. Our entree was no better. It was the most tasteless piece of Sea Bass I've ever eaten with a crunchy side of rice pilaf, a salty mushroom and spinach dish and some bright green unripe asparagus with a mystery sauce that tasted very much like margarine. The best thing about our meal was the bread...at least it was fresh! It was a very disappointing meal with a rather hefty price tag.
We have visited Wendell's for years. The food and service is always very good. I am disappointed that the Caesar Salad is no longer prepared fresh at your tables. It is still good but not as good. The salad was a reason to make the 2 hour drive but not anymore.
We were celebrating our 1st year anniversary. Alex our waiter did everything possible to make this a great memory for us. Our only comment concerning how to improve would be to change the chicken dish. For $31 I expected more than dry chicken with creamy penne pasta. My husband loved his tenderloin tips. The wine selection was excellent and very reasonably priced by the glass.
We celebrated my birthday at Wendalls. It was a lovely evening with a super waiter. I had the shrimp with capers and my husband had the beef tips with mushroom sauce. We also had an appetizer of cold boiled shrimp and we had the cheesecake for dessert. We watched the sun go down behind the mountains. Just lovely!
Over priced. Understaffed and the maître d' opined that there were only 3 waiters on duty. Bought a 2005 bottle of wine that was nice but not decanted so the last quarter was not drinkable due to the sediment. I had the Elk which was inconsistently done and for $44 for a small serving, I would have expected better quality. The other couple we were with commented that this used to be a good venue that was worth the inflated prices but alas, not anymore they also would also not return.
Wendell's offers a nice selection of entrees, and the ones we have chosen in two visits have had excellent preparation. The portions are generous, and I'd suggest sharing salads or other appetizers to leave room for the sizable entrees. Service can be slow, but a table at the window provides a lovely view of the lake and the mountains beyond.
This was a very special evening.

Our waiter Alex was fantastic. He was very attentive to our dining experience at Wendell's.
Food was excellent, prime rib and shrimp with stuffed crab was cooked to perfection.
The New York cheese cake with berry sauce for dessert was superb.

I have eaten here many times before and have been completely satisfied. I looked forward to returning and eating here everytime I visit Ruidoso. My wife and already knew what we wanted and ordered right away. We ordered the queen size prime rib to split and two sides. We were giving our water and glass of wine right away. This is when the service started to get out of control. Our server told us there was no bread at the time we said it's okay no big deal we will wait. A party of 5 sat down roughly 15 minutes after us and immediately got there bread with water from their server. Finally about 5 minutes after them we get our bread. After eating all the bread waiting for our meal we had drank the bottle of water left on our table. I waited 10 min to even see my server walking around to get his attention. He was no where to be found so I walked up to front desk and was met by a supervisor. I explained about no service from our server and being out of water for 10 minutes. So the supervisor brings us water and we sit and wait again for our shared meal. At this time we had already been sitting for an hour and seen our server twice. I again got up walked to the front to speak with the supervisor about our food order. He told me it was on the way. I sat down with my wife and our server finally shows up and said I maid mistake on someone else's order and walks away. When he came back with our food I asked him what does your mistake with someone else's order have to do with our order. He said nothing not a sorry or let me make it right just walked off again. I grabbed this young supervisor and explained this whole bad dinning experience. I explained to him about the bad service, the wait for our food, and when we got it COLD how upset I was. I told him this place is on the pricey side but my wife and enjoy coming here when we visit. His answer to me was " your not the only people who eat a lot of people do and walked off. I paid my tab and walked out.
