About Wayfare Tavern

Chef Tyler Florence brings his passion for high quality and style to San Francisco with his new flagship restaurant, Wayfare Tavern. A classic San Francisco Tavern featuring authentic American dishes inspired by local cuisine at the turn of the 20th century, the menu ranges from classic comforts to rustic delicacies. The beverage menu features locally-sourced wines including a selection of Florence's own label, quality draft beers and organic root beer as well as classic Victorian-era cocktails.

All three floors of the restaurant have been designed keeping historical accuracy in mind making Wayfare Tavern reminiscent of a Victorian parlor and an Edwardian men's club, where anything goes from black-tie to blue jeans. Pull up a stool to the Chef's Counter at the open kitchen and look on as Chef prepares your lunch or head to the Library and Billiard Room for a game of pool. Wayfare Tavern is a truly unparalleled dining experience translated from a century ago. Photo: John Lee.

We drove up from San Jose for my mother’s 75th birthday at her request. We had reservations and were seated very quickly. The staff was very friendly and very attentive The food was very good as we are a sharing family so we all ordered different entrees and sides so we got to try a good portion of the menu. All was excellent

First time to visit, heard slot about fried chicken, it was good. Usually don't order fried chicken because it's messy. This was worth it, deviled eggs were good mac and cheese was so so, chocolate pie was tasty but crust to thick and hard to eat, wouldn't order again. Overall I would go back, but with so many choice of places to eat not sure when I would.

Great spot with even better food. Loud, but not a turn off if you don’t mind it.

While rather loud, this was a great choice for meeting my son's future mother in law. The starter bread is amazing! We had the bone marrow, a first! It was so delicious, I definitely recommend it. The brie starter was delicious as well. I had the steak and while delicious it was a bit fatty and hard to chew. The potatoes were whipped so hard they were like gravy. :( But the fried chicken they are famous for didn't disappoint. Service was fast and courteous. They let us be seated before our companion arrived which was greatly appreciated because the bar was full and it was standing room only! I definitely recommend having a meal here, just plan on about $100 a head for your party.

Service was terrible: 15 minutes to receive first round of cocktails because the wait person had to return to the table THREE time to either confirm the order or report the bar no longer stocked a menu item. Then in a party of three one of the dinner orders was completely forgotten and had to be re-ordered, arriving to the table as the other two diners were finishing.

Apologies were given and accepted but that didn't make up for other lapses in service during the meal.

Of the meals delivered on time one was cold and one was missing a requested item.

It was my first time here, can't say I'm a hurry to return

It was great all together. Food was great as well as worth it. Didn’t realize that it can get really loud when there’s lots of people. That was the only thing about it so you can’t really have a decent conversation.

Food was good (not great)but significantly over priced. Service was terrible. Reservation was for 8pm and we got to the restaurant 15 minutes early. Was told that our table would not be ready for 8. Bar service was outstanding while we waited. We were disappointed that other people were seated ahead of us even though we were early and they had the same reservation time. No apology came from the staff. Server was terrible and one of the sides we ordered came under cooked. Also the bread was burnt. We were rushed into ordering. Not a very good experience and we will not go back. This was our third time eating at Wayfare and unfortunately the last.

I have been to Wayfare a few times and I'm sad to say that my last visit was a major letdown. We made a reservations for 7:45p and weren't seated til 8:30. The hostess had to then leave us a the upstairs bar because the table hadn't been set. Clearly it was an off day because she had to set it herself.

We then waited a good 10minutes and were never officially greeted. Water came, plates were taken but the server didn't say anything to us or even mention that he would be back to take our drink orders. We finally asked to see a manager in the hopes that things would get better. He wasn't very surprised to hear that it took this long and was only mildly apologetic. I guess perhaps they care less about complaints since it clearly doesn't make them have any less business. When the food did finally arrive it was just so-so.

I hope that their team takes issues like this more seriously or it will eventually heart them. I also hope that if I return, my experience is more like my first visit vs this last one.

Food: Pop-ups to begin the meal were a nice touch. Parsnip soup and Baby Arugula salad were both just ok especially for the price, although the presentation of the soup was great. The side broccolini was excellent, although it the remoulade was a little too mayonaise-y. The star of the show, the fried chicken with the great flakey crust and moist meat and the roasted garlic was excellent and can see why Food & Wine deemed it to be one of the best. The fried thyme & rosemary really comes through on the crust and gives it a much different taste than most fried chickens.
Service: Was good, although our waiter was also prepping for another big table, so he vanished on occasion. When around, he was excellent.

We set a reservation off of open table for 10:45. When the hostess sat us she didn’t say anything about a time constraint when placing an order though we knew the restaurant closed soon and we knew exactly what we wanted.
The server came over and said did, “did they just seat you?” And “did anyone tell you the kitchen closes in 3 minutes?” We said we had a 10:45 reservation from open table and just sat down a few minutes ago and no no one told us the kitchen was almost closed but we were ready to order.
He then said they take their last seating at 10:30. It was a bit awkward how he approached it but after that his service was fine and the food was delicious and came quickly.
However, he did offer us donuts as a dessert option and then came back and said sorry they were out so that was a let down for sure.

This was my second time in, and it was just as good if not better than the first time. The service is always spot on, extremely professional and attentive. The kind man who has corked my wine each time - I think his name is Michael? is the sweetest. Bone marrow and chicken are to die for!

My friends and I had a treat yourself day at Wayfare Tavern and it did not disappoint. WT is sort of a "classic" SF spot, but I always think of it as sort of stuffy, meant for FiDi work dinners. It was a misty, gray day in SF and we were looking for someplace cozy, with a fireplace and a good champagne list. We settled on Wayfare Tavern and it checked all of the boxes. Between two bottles of champagne, the Plateau de Fruits de Mer, prime beef tartare and deviled eggs, we had a very good time and I would absolutely come back.

Loved our lunch! Three of us enjoyed the Tavern Burger, fried chicken, and a daily special Ruben sandwich. Our server, Johnny, was amazing along with the rest of the service staff. Kudos to the friendly and efficient hostess who effectively managed a booming lunch-time crowd. Next time we're in San Francisco, Wayfare Tavern will be one of our stops.

I've been to Wayfare Tavern quite a few times and always enjoy it but this time was exceptional because of our waiter (I wish I could remember his name). He made us feel so welcome and was the perfect blend of friendly/funny and attentive to our needs. He even brought out a complimentary piece of birthday cake for our friend (it was her birthday lunch). There were 3 of us and we shared some sides and the salmon entree to get a few bites of different dishes and everything was "make me stop eating this" delicious! The whole experience elevated this from a fun birthday lunch to something truly memorable. Thank you Wayfare!

Hello, I just want to say that normally, Wayfare is one I always recommend to family and friends visiting. We have a lovely time and everything is stellar - from service to food to ambiance. HOwever, On Sunday 5th everything was disappointing. From the Popovers (lukewarm) to service (server left off one of our items, service was slow - table next to us had arrived after we did and were done and gone before our entrees even came and server recommendations weren't helpful - just reiterated what we could read on the menu and we didnt see her for long periods of time) to dinner items themselves. Food came lukewarm and normally excellent chicken was grisly and dry. THen leaving we had to have our to go items rebagged because they'd been tipped and juice soaked through bag etc. For the price we paid for things, my friends were disappointed we went here and for the first time ever in my coming there (which has been often over the past few years) so was I.

We arrived at 5:45 for our reservation and ended up being seated 30 minutes later (I think they forgot about us). We also did not have an intimate table as requested for my wife’s birthday, which was no big deal - until the waiter delivered the birthday desert to the table next to us instead 🙄. Great food and great atmosphere but these two problems with our dining experience are not what I would expect when spending $200 on dinner.

This was the 3rd time I've been here but the 1st time I was a bit unhappy with how the experience went. We had an 8:25 reservation and arrived 10 minutes early. However, we had to wait and were not seated until closer to 9. When we did get seated, we realized the the noise level was way too loud (louder than the previous times I had been). I felt we had to yell at each other at our table in order to be heard. We were provided an order of deviled eggs and it was mentioned that it was complimentary, but when we got the bill, the server charged for them. We had to another 10 minutes to flag him down and have him corrrect it.

The food was amazing, no doubt about that. But the whole experience this time was just very unpleasant.

This was my first time at the Wayfare Tavern. My guests and I were very happy. The upstairs dining room has a great feel, with wood and great music. The show kitchen downstairs is very cool too. Service was casual but friendly and efficient. The food was great - the salmon was fresh and perfectly prepared. The 2 month aged steak for two was phenomenal. Oysters were good, but not the best we've had.

We came into town on a cruise and had wanted to have a fun night out and found it at Wayfare Tavern. I'm so glad that we didn't have time for lunch. Markis R was out waiter and made the best suggestions to having a great dinner and evening. Markis came to our table just the right amount to make sure that we were having a wonderful evening and was charming. Thank you to the cook staff for a wonderful cooked meal. Come hungry, share a couple of starters, have a main meal and end the night with a yummy dessert. When coming ask if Markis is working and try and sit at one of his areas. Can't wait to come back to San Francisco for a great day and a yummy dinner.
