About Wayfare Tavern
Chef Tyler Florence brings his passion for high quality and style to San Francisco with his new flagship restaurant, Wayfare Tavern. A classic San Francisco Tavern featuring authentic American dishes inspired by local cuisine at the turn of the 20th century, the menu ranges from classic comforts to rustic delicacies. The beverage menu features locally-sourced wines including a selection of Florence's own label, quality draft beers and organic root beer as well as classic Victorian-era cocktails.
All three floors of the restaurant have been designed keeping historical accuracy in mind making Wayfare Tavern reminiscent of a Victorian parlor and an Edwardian men's club, where anything goes from black-tie to blue jeans. Pull up a stool to the Chef's Counter at the open kitchen and look on as Chef prepares your lunch or head to the Library and Billiard Room for a game of pool. Wayfare Tavern is a truly unparalleled dining experience translated from a century ago. Photo: John Lee.

Wayfare Tavern Ratings and Reviews
I liked the food but my Petrale Sole was n oily and tasteless. Also the waiter was not attentive at all. He also lied about the where our Oysters came from. We wanted Big ones from the East Coast and he insisted that the Small ones were from the East Coast. It was really annoying. We weren't going to argue about it, but it was not professional. I would recommend this place but the service needs improvement.
Underwhelming and disappointing meal. I expected better from a Michael Bauer top 100 restaurant. Restaurant does have great atmosphere and service. The meal started well with the popovers and salad and went down from there. The signature fried chicken was very ordinary-not crispy or especially flavorful. Have had much better elsewhere. Steak, for $42, was also very ordinary and not a great cut. Meal for 2 with a cocktail, 2 glasses of wine, no desert and tip came to $200. Had a much better meal for lunch that day for $66 with a cocktail, draft beer, desert and tip.
This was a disappointing and chaotic experience. First it took a while to get our servers attention. Once we placed our order which included two cocktails, we waited for a our drinks to come. Our appetizer arrived and still no cocktails. We were halfway finished with our appetizers when our cocktails arrived. I ordered the fish and chips sandwich. I took one bite of the sandwich and all the fish fell out of the sandwich and landed on my lap then on the floor. The servers came immediately and offered to replace the sandwich and get club soda to clean my shirt. The club soda never came. The new sandwich arrived promptly and it was delicious. My wife had the fried chicken and decided to take half of it home. We got the bill and they charged me for two fish sandwiches plus my wife’s meal. I said to the server that I didn’t know I was going to be charge for a second sandwich. He removed the second sandwich. We paid the bill and got our to go bag. When we got home we opened the to go bag and we got someone else’s lunch.
Positives: Great Ambiance and Drinks, Nice waiter and Bartender, Great food options for meat eaters (the fried chicken was a hit!). Moderate noise but great for a group or happy hour.
Cons: Hostess was disorganized and there was a significant wait for our reserved table (my advice would be to pester her sooner than I did so you don't get forgotten!), very limited options for vegetarians/vegans ( I called about this and there were not options presented- "it is what it is" was pretty much the response I got...) . Probably not a great option if this is you or your friends. Can be loud for a date or quiet dinner- would not recommend this earlier in the evening.
Beautiful restaurant. We had a reservation for 8:15 on a Sat night. We got there early to look for parking (there’s no valet) and found a spot right away. We checked in early got a table at 7:30. That was nice because both bars—upstairs and down were both packed. The cocktails...the first round was tasty; the second was way too strong. The bone marrow and the braised short ribs were amazing. The servings were bigger than we expected, so we didn’t save room for dessert unfortunately. The two of us ordered an appetizer, two entrees, and a side, and we couldn’t finish. We asked to take home the leftovers, and they gave us a claim ticket, and we picked up the bag st the hostess station on the way out. Cute system for leftovers. It was like a coat check but for food. The vibe was lively and fun. The service was great. The food was creative and delicious, and we had a great experience.
Atmosphere was great, and service was overall pretty good. Food was slightly above average, but nothing spectacular. It was a nice evening, but I was expecting a little more from the food offering. We had the fried chicken for a main, which was good, but nothing particularly special.
I love Wayfare feel. I love Wayfare food even more. What lacks CONSISTENTLY and always, is good service. Last Saturday was the worst service I have ever had there. One persons food Came 10 minutes later than everyone else’s. It was a burger.
Dessert came out before the coffee ( ordered at same time) Appetizers came out and were set high on the back of the booth- airing near other booth with other people. All because we didn’t have plates yet.
Been wanting to try this restaurant for quite some time since a fan of Tyler Florence. The fried chicken was as advertised and the mussels were fantastic! Don’t pass on the donuts for dessert because they are that good. Service was spot on and they always make sure your needs are met.
The food was very good, Green Goddess dressing and Fried chicken were the outstanding parts. wines by the glass were excellent. The service was initially poor. I was seated and waited for 10 minutes before a server who was not the one assigned to my table noticed that I had not yet been helped and took care of me. He was very help and knowledgeable and continued to come by during the rest of the evening to make sure everything was OK even after my assigned server took over.
Fried chicken was tasty & filling. Highly recommended for SF restaurant week, and even when the promotion has ended. Tcho chocolate dessert is a perfect ending to a lovely dinner. Service is attentive, water glasses are never empty. Ambiance is warm and charming. Looking forward to our next dining experience.
This is the fifth time I've dined at Wayfare and of all my visits, this was the least impressive. Sadly, the service was slow and inattentive - yes it was busy but I feel like it is always busy here, and this evening's service was especially lacking.
My friend and I ordered drinks and two appetizers. My Reconstruction was good and he seemed to like his beer. The bone marrow, which normally is quite good, ended up being under-cooked. The marrow was solid and a little cold. Disappointing. This might have contributed to my friend's upset stomach mid-meal. The tartare was, as always, delicious - no complaints there.
Of course, I will return to Wayfare in the future. It is a great restaurant overall. They must have just been having an off night.
I have been here once before. This time the waiter may have been busy, but he yanked the menus when we were done ordering our drinks & food & was not cheerful at all. My husband ordered their "world famous fried chicken" and ate all the white meat and saved the best pieces (dark meat) to eat at home. We did not finish our entrees so they were kind enough to box our leftovers. They FORGOT to add my husband's fried chicken, and they only packed half of my entree. I understand that mistakes can be made and that we should have checked the to go bag.. but that's only something that I would do at a Chinese restaurant and not a place of this caliber. Would I come back? Probably to try the fried chicken (dark meat only).
- Rock Star street parking on a (early) Sunday evening...
- Quick seating
- Quick service *
- Popovers to die for!!!!
- Really tasty french fries, sautéed mushrooms, butter lettuce salad & fried chicken!
- Absolutely fantastic chocolate pie... I was expecting a dull-tasting sugar bomb (like the giant brownies you get in other places). But NO! While certainly a sugar bomb, it's an extremely fine tasting chocolate cream pie!!!
- Great drinks (and they've got St. George Terroir so what could be bad???)
- * Despite every other service-related interaction being quite expeditious , for some unexplained reason there was about a 30-minute pause between our salad and our entrées (fried chicken with french fries and sautéed mushrooms sides). Other patrons who seated after us received their entrées before we did. Never did find out why, though we asked. Worth the wait, though.
My first time here, my wife's third. We took advantage of the Dine Out SF special. Really fun, great food & drinks, good service... we will be back frequently.
Highly recommend this place!!!
I've been an Open Table member since its inception, but I've never taken the time to post a review - mostly because I've had good experiences. However, the disappointing experience my party had at Wayfare Tavern merited a review which I hope the restaurant management takes to heart because I've had lunch, dinner, and drinks there many times before - all positive - and I hope they can get things back on track.
The hostess greeted us. We were waiting for one of our party of four, so we went to the upstairs bar for a pre-dinner drink. When all four of us were ready to be seated 10 minutes after our scheduled reservation, the staff told us the bar tab could not be transferred to our dinner tab. Rather than show us to the table and bring us the bar tab, we were asked to pay the tab before they would seat us, but the hostess said she didn't have time to wait so she pointed to where we should seat ourselves once the bartender had closed our tab. She then told us we needed to vacate the table by 9pm for our 7pm reservations (which typically wouldn't be a problem, but we thought was a rude to start to the night, particularly because our waitress said they weren't overly booked the rest of the night.)
The waitress was very cheerful and admitted she was newly out of training. She did her best, but the kitchen didn't help by bringing our appetizers and entrees in sporadic order, and the bartender (from earlier) took upwards of 20 minutes for our 2nd round of drinks. A beer order took the longest to receive for some reason.
The food was mediocre compared to my past experiences: the deviled eggs clearly had been prepped earlier in the night and kept at the ready for orders because the yolk had crusted, the sauce with the calamari had a questionable tangy tartness, and the pork short rib seemed to have been brined instead of braised. The chicken was fine, the burger was good, and the slightly late-arriving salmon was good.
Please don't lose your goodness, Wayfare Tavern.
The fried chicken was great and the menu worked well for me. It was a bit tricky for my wife, who is a pescatarian. She got the mussels with bacon held back, which were good. She also ordered the calamari, which was not very good. It was in some sort of lemon cream sauce that was quite overbearing.
It was ALL ABOUT THE CHICKEN! Delicious!
They did not provide patrons with the Restaurant Week menu unless you specifically asked for it.
We ordered cocktails which were specialty crafted but a bit watery for our tastes. The server suggested we consider a side to share since the chicken on the Restaurant week menu came with nothing. Come to think of it, I don't think they inquired how our beverages were? Maybe another 10 min passed and we were asked about sides. We ordered Brussels sprouts that were yummy! At some point, we were asked if we wanted "more" popovers. We told the server we never received ANY popovers, but yes, we wanted some! He apologized and got them for us right away. A short while later out 1st course came: butter lettuce wedge salad. Really wonderful! The chicken came out well timed, after we had finished our salads. Chocolate cream pie followed after we finished entrees.
My friends and I came here for Restaurant Week - salad for an appetitzer, fried chicken for the main course, and a chocolate pie? for dessert. The fried chicken was OUTSTANDING! We also ordered the deviled eggs and calamari, which were good, but I wasn't blown away. I would, however, order them all again... haha. Our server was THE best - I'm ashamed that I forgot his name (forgive me, we had cocktails before dinner) - but he was an absolute delight. I think the only bummer to our night was they ran out of their mac n cheese... and we REALLLLLY wanted to try the mac n cheese. Guess we're coming back to try it!
I’ve never left a review here, but this was a very frustrating experience. I met with clients for a business lunch at 1:15pm with a reservation. The hostess said they were delayed and we didn’t get seated until 1:45pm. We all had meetings to get to and had to rush through lunch. This was a late lunch and I hope the restaurant can better manage their flow in the future.
