All three floors of the restaurant have been designed keeping historical accuracy in mind making Wayfare Tavern reminiscent of a Victorian parlor and an Edwardian men's club, where anything goes from black-tie to blue jeans. Pull up a stool to the Chef's Counter at the open kitchen and look on as Chef prepares your lunch or head to the Library and Billiard Room for a game of pool. Wayfare Tavern is a truly unparalleled dining experience translated from a century ago. Photo: John Lee.

Organic Fried Chicken
(best-fried chicken in America list, F&W magazine) buttermilk brine, roasted garlic, crisp herbs, lemon
Beautifully decorated space, great menu. Server was friendly, attentive but not overbearing. I would definitely visit again.
Excellent food as always! Fried chicken is outstanding!
Food was great. We waited more than 30 minutes after being seated to get drink orders taken. This was after asking the hostess if she could let the server know and then asking a passing server for help. He immediately took our drink order. Service picked up then but with outside seating we asked 3 different times to have the heater for our section turned on and it never was. All other sections had heaters in use. The overall feeing was very unwelcoming. It’s not comparable with the wonderful food we were served.
The chicken and waffles were a nice combo of sweet and savory, delicious. I particularly enjoyed the popovers as the pre-meal treat. Light and airy. The butter had just the right amount of salt which made it the perfect accompaniment. Service was well-functioning considering the issues other places have been experiencing. It was obvious the staff got along and communicated well. Makes a huge difference in higher end establishments. Keep up the good work!
Drinks are great. Service is average. Burger is pretty good. Others ordered fried chicken and said it is amazing.
Not the first time we’ve eaten at Wayfare & it won’t be the last. The menu seems to change a few times a year (the fried chicken is the one for sure item) which is cool but is also a bummer.
Food was fine, but you’d think it was outstanding given how pretentious and judgmental our waiter was.
Fabulous fried chicken!
Good good food but very small portions for the price
We chose this restaurant after an episode of great food truck race
The staff were great, the food was terrific. We felt a bit rushed as we did not have time to enjoy our beverage before the food arrived. A very minor issue with such an enjoyable evening but we thought you should be aware.
this was our fourth visit, and food/service are still top notch!
Great food at reasonable prices considering the quality.
We came here to celebrate my birthday, what a bummer experience. We were seated pretty promptly at a corner table which was nice. Our waitress (Maria?) greeted our table and immediately asked what we would like to drink and eat after not really having any time to browse the menu. After being rushed to order, our appetizers arrived and were great. Our drinks came after that and mine was wrong. There was a bit of a gap between that and the food. We were not checked on to ask how our food was and after asking for boxes we were brought the check without asking if we would like to see a dessert menu. Kind of rude. Won’t be going back.
Recommended by my niece, we gave Wayfare Tavern a try, after taking in a show. The food was top-notch, but the service was another story. I've seen glowing reviews of the service from other customers, so we just happened to catch an off-night. Our server came and took our beverage order, then we didn't see her for about 15-20 minutes. She took our order and the bread came shortly after. Then there was a wait for the salad, then an even longer wait for my wife's fried chicken and my hamburger. A table that arrived after we did actually got served before we did, so that didn't sit well. Finally, we weren't given a dessert menu and it was another long wait for our check to be delivered. With so many good options near our East Bay home, we wouldn't make a special trip to SF for this place. If we had another all-day event in the City, maybe, but I hope the service will be better next time. We had a 5:30 reservation and didn't leave until just before 8 p.m. Most of that was spent waiting for food or the check. At the prices charged, the service should have been absolutely top-notch. This was a miss for this customer.
Always a solid experience, but definitely not a stand-out anymore in SF. Our party of five all agreed it was a solid 3. Food was good - burger the best by far with brioche bun and caramelized onions (though waitress mixed up the burgers for medium and medium rare among our party), friend chicken moist- with too mushy of a crust though, croque madam bread should have been toasted and more gruyere cheese on top, tater tots were a bit disappointing as we could have gotten same kind from Safeway and added chives and sour cream...no wow factor. The green salad dressing literally just tasted like mayo (and I like mayo, but it was maybe the olive oil kind...or something not quite right)
Service was ok. Cocktails came watered down (not sure if ice melted or too much soda water was added??)- so we returned and just stuck with straight alcohol instead.
Ambience is still cozy.
Would definitely recommend this place. Yes, it’s a little pricier but totally worth it. Everything we got was amazing!
Fantastic service and food every time!
very nice atmosphere and delicious deserts. highly recommended!
Very disappointing service. Server went on break and we were told had to wait 30 minutes for him to return for our check. Could not order more wine or tea. Just sit there and wait. Called to speak to manager and no one called back.
Amazing experience. After dining at Miller and Lux the experience was equally amazing. The service and the food was top notch. It was loud but my 7yo daughter had no problems while munching on her mac n cheese.
A longtime favorite, it was great to be back at Wayfare Tavern. The salmon was delicious (great portion size, especially after a yummy Brie appetizer for the table), and the mac and cheese and fried chicken were also hits with my table. Great service, great atmosphere, will be back soon!
Awesome night, love Wayfare and have eaten there many times. Best burger in town, excellent fried chicken and the service is always top notch. Not to be missed if you are visiting SF.
The fried chicken is not as I remembered it. It is definitely nothing to write home about. Dry white meat with breading that just crumbles. I've had much better elsewhere.
Service was really really slow. 25 min wait for entree. Ordered coffee and waited 20 min for a single cup.
We were there at 1230 for lunch and they were out for 4 menu items.
Not the experience I've had in the past at Wayfare.
The chicken is definitely something to experience and come back for — simply divine! Excellent service.
Sunday afternoon brunch was unexpectedly busy (not many places are open yet in the Financial District). Good brunch menu, good food, slowish service.
The kitchen took 45 minutes to prepare our soup and tater tots. And another 45 minutes for the entree. The waitress was fantastic but the kitchen service was beyond horrendous. The good was good but not spectacular. I was expecting far, far better from this restaurant.
The food was terrific but the drinks were horrible
Overall it was a good experience food was great, baked Mac and cheese lacked flavor it was quite bland. Service was great from the bussers and food runners, the server seemed like they spent more time with other customers. And more attentive to them. For example, we were asking the server questions and the server was waved down by another table and the server went to the table mid conversation, then never came back to answer our question. But overall good food, good ambience. Sour taste from the server.
Good food, but took a very long time for a server to greet us after we sat down. Once we ordered drinks and food, it went smoothly
First time here, for weekend brunch, so we had to try the famous chicken. It was good, but not life changing. Order is a generous 5 pieces & could easily be shared. We took 3 pieces home. Burger with Brie & bacon was very good. Cesar salad fine, sides ok. Good selection of wines by bottle or glass, beers, including on tap & cocktails. Sadly we didn’t have room for dessert, baked Alaska & house made doughnuts sounded yummy.
Drinks & food came slowly. The restaurant was full & there seemed to be plenty of servers, so perhaps the kitchen was behind. Dark wood booths, brick walls & pewter chargers make restaurant look like it has been around much longer than it has. Open kitchen, hard walls & jazz music amped up noise level. Restaurant was chilly inside, outside tables are all in the shade of neighboring buildings. We found a parking space steps from the restaurant. There were plenty of spots on the street less than a block away.
I’ll go back, order something other than chicken & save room for dessert.
Had the best birthday celebration last night. Our waiter James was awesome-funny, nice and provided excellent service. The food? DELICIOUS!!!! Can't wait to come back
Just a little bit of touch and care in every dish to make them better than at many restaurants. The staff makes the food and wine special
Reunion of family after COVID separation.
Service is suffering….
Great, as always.
Service started out strong and ended with us wanting more. Attention began to dwindle, quickly - don’t know if it was due to the amount of additional reservations coming in, or other factors. However, food and overall experience was good. Just wish we had been given a little more attention.
Hank the bartender is the best.
Service was stellar. Earl Grey yea was lovely on a rainy Monday.
Caesar salad was less than I remember but the popover made up for that.
We will be back soon!
Early lunch while in town. Bartender was great - lots of fun and accommodating even though he was really busy being the only one behind bar.
