All three floors of the restaurant have been designed keeping historical accuracy in mind making Wayfare Tavern reminiscent of a Victorian parlor and an Edwardian men's club, where anything goes from black-tie to blue jeans. Pull up a stool to the Chef's Counter at the open kitchen and look on as Chef prepares your lunch or head to the Library and Billiard Room for a game of pool. Wayfare Tavern is a truly unparalleled dining experience translated from a century ago. Photo: John Lee.

Great food and great service!
Always a go-to when we visit San Fran. Great bar options and first-class food choices. True professionals.
Great outdoor dining space and experience. Will be back
Went in for a quick bite with a friend. Neither of us were super hungry or felt like getting wine or a cocktail, which usually leads to not the best service in most restaurants. They still made us feel welcome and were super attentive. And the food was absolutely delicious!
I read a ton of reviews before making our reservation. We will start with the service. There were so many great reviews about the service. Ours was mediocre at best. Hardly saw our waiter and when we did I felt like he wanted to be somewhere else. The food…the truffle Brie was amazing. The bread and frisée salad on the side were great accompaniments. The Cesar salad had absolutely no dressing but our waiter never came around to ask how we were doing, so my husband gave up and just ate it as it was. The Brussel sprouts were great. Very flavorful and cooked perfectly. The popovers were also very good. I was torn between the salmon and the award winning chicken. The waiter offered an add on of two pieces if I got the salmon. Great!! Well it ended up being part of a chicken breast (almost a chicken nugget really) and a chicken wing. My husband also ordered the chicken so if I wanted more I could sneak off his plate. We should have listened to the reviews. The chicken was just ok. Maybe a bit less than just ok. Not crispy. Not flavorful. Would not recommend it. My salmon dish was perfectly cooked and really enjoyed it. Our friend got the pork chop and really enjoyed it. It was very tender and cooked well. We also got the donuts which were good. With all the options in the city I probably wouldn’t recommend this place as a first choice. We did get great parking in front! I really had high hopes!
Fantastic food, service and atmosphere. I got the chicken and waffles which was amazing. They are famous for their chicken and it well earned.
Very comfortable outside seating! The food was good. However, the cocktails were better!!
After hearing rave reviews, was underwhelmed with the blandness of my choices
Always delicious!!! Service was excellent
Excellent way to celebrate a belated birthday celebration!
Had heard so much about this place and with a friend in from out of town, thought it would be great try for lunch. We had a 1 pm reservation and had chosen an inside table because it was a cold day. We would've been warmer outside with the space heaters. There was no heat on at all inside and it was uncomfortably cold.
The service was attentive and professional, the best thing about Wayfare. What truly disappointed was the food, or, more precisely, the value of the food. My friend ordered a salad with salmon on the side. Said it was okay but not great. On the advice of another friend who loves his place, I ordered the fried chicken, said to be "considered the best in America."
I've had far better fried chicken in any number of holes-in-the-wall, both here and around the country. It was moist to be sure, but less flavorful than I would have expected. Plus, a plate with a sectioned (small) half chicken was $32. Without sides, just a couple garlic cloves and two lemon wedges.
The mac and cheese was okay, but again, light on flavor.
The damage for the two of us, including one (small pour) of Chardonnay (I drank water), no desert, and a 20% tip, came to $130. Such poor value.
Wonderful experience as always, perfect for a business lunch and delicious food.
Delicious, wonderful, old-school SF experience. It was a perfect dining experience. And the popovers are divine.
Anniversary dinner. No acknowledgment of that even though that info was supplied at time of reservation
Our experience far exceeded our expectations. The food was amazing and the service witty and outstanding. The doughnut was a revelation. Thank you for an excellent lunch on a cold dreary day.
Always like this restaurant. Great bar. Nice selection of seafood- very fresh.
Tower of seafood was great. Fried chicken good.excellent mussels. Deviled eggs bland.
Lovely ambiance, attentive wait staff. It took longer than expect to order drinks and starters. And while several items were outstanding (popovers!), some old favorites like the fried chicken were just ok.
Out of town friends who love to dine and they really enjoyed it.
Loved the ambiance and the service, but the food was a little bit disappointing. Everything was bland, from the side dishes to the award winning friend chicken. The bone marrow was more like brisket.
Had a great time. Service started off slow, but got real good. Enjoyed my three course meal. Deviled eggs were great. Mac & cheese was delicious. Brussels sprouts were perfect. Pork chop was really good. I even enjoyed the parsnips which I’ve never had before. Ended with the donuts. Since I was by myself it is making for a great lunch the next day. Can’t wait to come back and try the chicken. Other customers were raving about it. Thanks for the fun night.
Cozy, clubby atmosphere (indoors) for high-end American comfort food. Good wine list.
Good meal. You can't go wrong with their classic fried chicken which is very famous. It's not super batter-y if that's what you're looking for. My husband had the pork chop and it was very good. I love their take on the martini with the orange vermouth and lemon bitters.
Popovers are the best in our meal. Fried Chicken was very plain. A bit underwhelming.
We requested outdoor seating and had a fabulous table. Heat lamps kept us warm and the food and service was great. Never disappointed when we eat there!
We were seated in outdoor patio which was nicely heated and covered. The food was delicious. Everyone in our group got either the tuna melt or the burger and praised their dish.
Enjoyed my first visit to Wayfare Tavern. The fried chicken sandwich lived up to its reputation. Moist, tender chicken with a light, crispy crust, with apple slaw. The service was impeccable. I'll be back!
The table where we were seated was right next to the kitchen and the alley door.
It was very cold and noisy- not a great place for dining. Food was a bit under seasoned.
We ate outdoors by a heat lamp and it was divine. Excellent service, delicious food - an extraordinary experience.
Amazing all the way around. Every single thing we ordered was delicious. From pre dinner drinks all the way through to the doughnuts for dessert. This restaurant did not disappoint.
Great service and great food! Thank you for accommodating our tardiness and being so flexible. Amazing team!
Fabulous experience. Food was on point and service was attentive and very helpful. Thank you!!
Our waitress was great!! The food was not as great. The porterhouse steak was cooked terribly. The manager never came to apologize. The duck confit was excellent.
Really good place to eat. I’m glad we tried it, food a tad high then add on the 5% San Francisco adjustment just feels a stretch. Would rather just see the 5% rolled in to cogs vs a fee. Service was good, wine list good.
The fried chicken is amazing. We sat outside and it was cozy and quiet.
Nicely heated outdoor dining which was key to our comfort.
The service was very good and the food was delicious. Thank you!
Great service but food just decent nothing great.
