About Wayfare Tavern
Chef Tyler Florence brings his passion for high quality and style to San Francisco with his new flagship restaurant, Wayfare Tavern. A classic San Francisco Tavern featuring authentic American dishes inspired by local cuisine at the turn of the 20th century, the menu ranges from classic comforts to rustic delicacies. The beverage menu features locally-sourced wines including a selection of Florence's own label, quality draft beers and organic root beer as well as classic Victorian-era cocktails.
All three floors of the restaurant have been designed keeping historical accuracy in mind making Wayfare Tavern reminiscent of a Victorian parlor and an Edwardian men's club, where anything goes from black-tie to blue jeans. Pull up a stool to the Chef's Counter at the open kitchen and look on as Chef prepares your lunch or head to the Library and Billiard Room for a game of pool. Wayfare Tavern is a truly unparalleled dining experience translated from a century ago. Photo: John Lee.

Wayfare Tavern Ratings and Reviews
We were seated in an awkward corner by the stairwells and we didn’t get our menu until 12 min after seating. Thenafter, it took 10 min before our server took our order. The whole lunch process was about 2 hours long and this was on MLK Day, with plenty of seating. Questioning what there service would be like on a normal busier day.
First of get yourself a cocktail or three here, some of the best in SF. I usually would never order fried chicken for a meal but the waiter was really talking it up. I have to say it might be the best Fried Chicken on the planet. Very impressed with this place......go and have fun.
Food awesome- ambiance fantastic! We will return because the non responsive/ slow service was an anomaly. We have been there when it has been much busier than 1:30 in the afternoon and Service has been more attentive so we don’t see that experience as representative of Wayfare Tavern Service.
My husband and I were treating our granddaughter as her Christmas present. She requested a day in the City with us instead of a purchased present. We let her choose the restaurant, thus the reason we had lunch here. All three of us enjoyed our lunch, the staff was very good and friendly, and the service very good. We agreed that we would definitely go back.
W made a reservation for 8:30 pm but weren't seated until nearly 30 minutes later. At one point the hostess told us our table was being set but 15 minutes later she still claimed it was almost ready. It took about 40 minutes for us to get our burgers and mine was cold. It's a very handsome restaurant with a casual ambiance. The servers were friendly (they checked-in just the right amount), I enjoyed my drinks and thought the food was tasty but the experience was frustrating and absolutely not worth the price. I have no plans to go back.
Second visit, ended up in The Sequoia the first time because we didn't have reservations. It is the fourth floor bar and I believe the had a condensed version of the menu available. Good and drinks were great so we decided to make a rez for the second visit. Got there at 5:30 got one of the only spots available with Open Table and the place was virtually empty, but by 6 it was packed! Had the salmon and fried chicken (again) - awesome. The popovers are superb. Met a friendly couple next to us and had a chatty evening. Fun and good eats!
This is NOT a kid friendly place, but we came in with our 2 young daughters (4 & 6) and they couldn’t have treated us nicer. Our server was so sweet. There was a longer than normal wait for our food to arrive, but our server took it upon herself to bring us a free order of their amazing donuts w/ some ice cream. The fried chicken was probably the best we’d ever had (and we are food lovers). Deviled eggs missed the mark for me in flavor, the tarragon was great, but something else in them was off. Overall we had a wonderful experience and we’d definately go there again when we are in town. (For the fried chicken alone!)
Lovely setting, warm and comfortable. Service was spotty though. Waitress seemed distracted and when we told her we were done with our plates (I had some to go) she presented the check without checking if we were interested in coffee/dessert - which in fact we were. An odd misstep for such a well regarded restaurant.
WE loved the restaurant my husband and I celebrated the holidays, absolutely loved the steak tartare and the fried chicken was delicious as well.
The service was superb, the only thing I felt is that the restaurant was a little too cold, it felt like the AC was on!! So I had to put my sweater to warm up the entire time I was there but other than that , we can't wait to go back.
i had read the reviews and was disappointed by the noise level and lack of xmas menu, given a description of that when I reserved in November. Understand the last minute short staff and decision to stick w tried and true. Mostly, I was disappointed in the noise level, lack of intimacy and option for dinner when I’d been led to believe no dinner (vs 2pm rez.) was happening on xmas eve. I’d prefer to spend $200+ at a quieter establishment w more options. was surprised to see a guy wearing only his white undershirt when clothing was described as upscale w coat check. our server was fabulous!
Other than its location and the fact that it's a lovely restaurant, it is hard to understand the hype around this place. Considering the prices, which are high, the food is bland, uninspired and limited. The servers, while very nice and as attentive as they could be, were clearly overwhelmed, thus the service was erratic -- too slow until everything was dumped on the table at once. A $200 lunch for four should not leave you feeling fleeced.
