About Wayfare Tavern

Chef Tyler Florence brings his passion for high quality and style to San Francisco with his new flagship restaurant, Wayfare Tavern. A classic San Francisco Tavern featuring authentic American dishes inspired by local cuisine at the turn of the 20th century, the menu ranges from classic comforts to rustic delicacies. The beverage menu features locally-sourced wines including a selection of Florence's own label, quality draft beers and organic root beer as well as classic Victorian-era cocktails.

All three floors of the restaurant have been designed keeping historical accuracy in mind making Wayfare Tavern reminiscent of a Victorian parlor and an Edwardian men's club, where anything goes from black-tie to blue jeans. Pull up a stool to the Chef's Counter at the open kitchen and look on as Chef prepares your lunch or head to the Library and Billiard Room for a game of pool. Wayfare Tavern is a truly unparalleled dining experience translated from a century ago. Photo: John Lee.

We come to the city everybyear to celebrate our anniversary. This wa our 24th and we decided to go to the Tavern. The bartender was fantastic, informative, and made us feel like no else was there, but it was hopping. All his suggestions we tried, beef tartare, braised short ribs, salmon. All fantastic!
I ordered a glass of wine and was greatly disappointed...it was 4oz. That is a joke for such a great place. Short pours only service one person or one side, the owner/restaurant. A 5-6 oz pour is tolerable, but 4oz. Disappointing. I sent it back and after that I could feel the lack of service from there. Marcus was good, but did not check on us after that but passed by us every 2-3min.
Aside from that, now I know and I will be back for the great bar experience and stick to beer or cocktails. Thank you.

As always the food and the service was excellent. I want to give a special thanks to the restaurant, as I was able to sit side-by-side with my companion that has hearing in only one ear. The restaurant is always busy and this allowed us to have a nice conversation even though the noise level is quite loud. Thank you so much

Really great California/American inspired menu. Everything from fried chicken to steak tartare. It does get pretty loud, so fine for a one on one business lunch, but if you need to make a presentation, I would recommend going somewhere quieter as even the private room gets quite noisy. The waiters are accommodating without being overbearing and when you sit down, you get complimentary popovers!

The food was overall good, especially the fried chicken, but overpriced, especially considering that they serve no sides with the entrees unless they are ordered separately. Sides were not great. The whipped potatos were more like potato soup. Still, it’s a nice bar and grill and a good, but pricey, choice for lunch.

The service at this place has been consistently poor the few times I've gone. We had a reservation for lunch but still ended up waiting for almost half an hour to be sat. THe server brought me my entree but told me that it was supposed to be given to another table so he took the plate off my table and gave it to another table which is something I've never experienced.

This is one of the best restaurants in San Francisco! We drive over 60 miles to eat there. Doesn’t hurt that Chef Tyler is my favorite Chef, I just wish he would put on the menu his braised short rib recipe.

Will be back again soon.

We were seated in an awkward corner by the stairwells and we didn’t get our menu until 12 min after seating. Thenafter, it took 10 min before our server took our order. The whole lunch process was about 2 hours long and this was on MLK Day, with plenty of seating. Questioning what there service would be like on a normal busier day.

I've been to Wayfare Tavern many times over the past few years, and was really impressed (again) this past Sunday with the continued impeccable quality of the food and service. The place hasn't lost a step, for sure. Highly recommended.

First of get yourself a cocktail or three here, some of the best in SF. I usually would never order fried chicken for a meal but the waiter was really talking it up. I have to say it might be the best Fried Chicken on the planet. Very impressed with this place......go and have fun.

Food awesome- ambiance fantastic! We will return because the non responsive/ slow service was an anomaly. We have been there when it has been much busier than 1:30 in the afternoon and Service has been more attentive so we don’t see that experience as representative of Wayfare Tavern Service.

My husband and I were treating our granddaughter as her Christmas present. She requested a day in the City with us instead of a purchased present. We let her choose the restaurant, thus the reason we had lunch here. All three of us enjoyed our lunch, the staff was very good and friendly, and the service very good. We agreed that we would definitely go back.

W made a reservation for 8:30 pm but weren't seated until nearly 30 minutes later. At one point the hostess told us our table was being set but 15 minutes later she still claimed it was almost ready. It took about 40 minutes for us to get our burgers and mine was cold. It's a very handsome restaurant with a casual ambiance. The servers were friendly (they checked-in just the right amount), I enjoyed my drinks and thought the food was tasty but the experience was frustrating and absolutely not worth the price. I have no plans to go back.

Second visit, ended up in The Sequoia the first time because we didn't have reservations. It is the fourth floor bar and I believe the had a condensed version of the menu available. Good and drinks were great so we decided to make a rez for the second visit. Got there at 5:30 got one of the only spots available with Open Table and the place was virtually empty, but by 6 it was packed! Had the salmon and fried chicken (again) - awesome. The popovers are superb. Met a friendly couple next to us and had a chatty evening. Fun and good eats!

This is NOT a kid friendly place, but we came in with our 2 young daughters (4 & 6) and they couldn’t have treated us nicer. Our server was so sweet. There was a longer than normal wait for our food to arrive, but our server took it upon herself to bring us a free order of their amazing donuts w/ some ice cream. The fried chicken was probably the best we’d ever had (and we are food lovers). Deviled eggs missed the mark for me in flavor, the tarragon was great, but something else in them was off. Overall we had a wonderful experience and we’d definately go there again when we are in town. (For the fried chicken alone!)

Lovely setting, warm and comfortable. Service was spotty though. Waitress seemed distracted and when we told her we were done with our plates (I had some to go) she presented the check without checking if we were interested in coffee/dessert - which in fact we were. An odd misstep for such a well regarded restaurant.

WE loved the restaurant my husband and I celebrated the holidays, absolutely loved the steak tartare and the fried chicken was delicious as well.

The service was superb, the only thing I felt is that the restaurant was a little too cold, it felt like the AC was on!! So I had to put my sweater to warm up the entire time I was there but other than that , we can't wait to go back.

Sincerely

Maria Frey
