All three floors of the restaurant have been designed keeping historical accuracy in mind making Wayfare Tavern reminiscent of a Victorian parlor and an Edwardian men's club, where anything goes from black-tie to blue jeans. Pull up a stool to the Chef's Counter at the open kitchen and look on as Chef prepares your lunch or head to the Library and Billiard Room for a game of pool. What Insiders Are Saying
Wayfare Tavern is an old-school spot in the Financial District. And we mean that in the very best way.
I am never disappointed when I go to this place. Great place to meet for dinner or lunch.
Okay experience, food was amazing. Minus the wait. We had reservations at 9pm and didn't get seated until 9:40. We sat at the bar and had a cocktail and as we waited, others were being sat. We even overheard couples with 9:30 reservations being sat before us. I was very disappointed because it was our anniversary and we fly in to San Francisco just to eat here every year. We approached the host and hostess a couple of times and kindly reminded them that we were still waiting. Not the friendliest...
I always enjoy dining at Wayfare Tavern. I split the 32 oz. rib eye, it was delicious, perfectly cooked! The steak tartare is one of my favorite items on the menu, it was very good, but it seemed the kitchen added a little more hot sauce than the other times I’ve eaten it. I didn’t mind because I enjoy spicy food. I look forward to returning very soon!
Our Waiter was exceptional. He was helpful with drink selection, and gave good advice to our family who was headed to Hawaii the next day. I think our waiter's name was Tom.
Food was very good. Hostess was friendly upon entering and seated us right away with our reservation. The only issue was the waiter we had asked to pack up my food to go. When I asked him for it since he forgot to bro g it back, he was rude and said I had to ask the “person who bussed the table”. I told him that he was the one and he just walked away rudely. This was after we paid, spent over 300. For 4 people and tipped him well. If I had him again as a waiter, I would asked to be seated elsewhere. Other than that, portions were generous and food was great!
Looks like an upscale British pub. The fried chicken really is that good. Large portion sizes.
There was a long wait for the food to come out of the kitchen. How long should it take to make a hamburger and fried chicken? The seating on the first floor created enough noise to give a person a headache. Perhaps that is the "vibrant bar scene"? In the future, I will avoid 6pm dinners with buddies. Giving credit where credit is due, the hamburger and fried chicken are probably among the best in San Francisco.
The food was disappointing. The best part was the pop-over.
Surprised to find pub food this good. Two of us shared the steak tartare, a serve of their epic fried chicken, and the donuts for dessert. It wasn’t low carb, but it was utterly delicious.
Service was attentive and efficient.
Food was very good. Wife had the fried chicken and it was quite good. I had the tavern burger, which was very tasty. I ate the roasted garlic that came with the chicken, which made the fries that much better.
The food never disappoints. The best steak tartare in SF since Stars. Excellent mixologists.
A favorite weekend lunch spot.
Would not recommend. Mediocre expensive food and very slow rude service.
You can be sure Tyler Florence was once the purveyor of Cafeteria in NYC as the service pace was so rushed and clinical as to evoke memories of bowling banquets and bad weddings gone by. From appetizers to main entrees to the finish the entire meal took a little more than 35 minutes, a service which was overly efficient if not overfly friendly - a waiter nearly knocked me over on the way out half running through the dining room to deliver a tray of deviled eggs - which begs the question can food delivered that quick be freshly prepared?
The food itself - top notch, flavorful and bountiful. The fried chicken is indeed special - but if you’re expecting classic southern fried chicken you will be disappointed. Open up to a new experience in comfort food and you’ll be agreeable.
But all that comfort food is no good if you aren’t invited in to relax, enjoy your meal and remember it as something special - that’s where Wayfare falls short.
Despite making a reservation we were asked to wait 45 minutes past the reservation. When we asked the Maitre D about it she shrugged and said “Reservation isn’t an exact science” in a very condescending manner.
Good stuff! Fun night with out of town friend
Was as good as the reviews say. Fried chicken was out of this world good, and so were the homemade donuts!! I’d go back again and again if I lived here!!
We enjoyed our dinner at Wayfare Tavern except for the noise. It is a fun place to eat but be careful about ordering as the food can be very rich.
You're asked to wait for your table in the bar area but it takes forever to get a drink. First a waiter comes and assumes you're eating at the high tables - not. Then you say you're getting drinks and he says that a drink waitress will be right over - doesn't happen. I finally just went to the bar. The bartender wasn't very busy but our table was ready before he had our drinks ready. Not a great start. However, it's a great place! And I'll keep coming back.
We had dinner on a Sunday night. It was not busy. The ambiance is warm and inviting. The food comfortable and tasty. Unfortunately the waiter was inattentive and very slow. He seldom returned to ask if we needed anything and when the food took unusually long, he never stopped by to acknowledge this. This was very disappointing. Without good service we would rather go somewhere else.
Went based on a recommendation from a friend for an anniversary dinner. I was extremely disappointed with the whole experience. Made reservations a month ahead of time and table was not ready when we arrived on time. Staff were not friendly and barely acknowledged our presence. It was so noisy in the restaurant and maybe that’s why the staff barely spoke because they knew we wouldn’t be able to hear them. My chicken was fair (not bad but not great). My wife’s trout was fishy and possibly under cooked. Mac and cheese was good but the mashed potatoes tasted like instant potatoes. I expected more based on other reviews and recommendations. I was embarrassed to have brought my wife here on our anniversary.
The food was good. Since I’ve hear so much about the fried chicken, I dnexided to order it. The portion is quite generous, although I’m not sure I would order again. It was good, but not GREAT. Felt rushed out of the restaurant, which in all honesty I did not appreciate. Kind of expensive - $120 for fried chicken, a burger, 2 glasses of wine. Downstairs is really loud; quieter upstairs.
Excellent service and food. The fried chicken is to die for. My wife fell in love with their mac & cheese. We could not of asked for a better time. The restaurant is beautiful as well.
Excellent in every way.
Went for a business dinner on a Wednesday eve and found the place packed at 7.45 pm. Loved the casual ambiance and vibe. Service was very good...prompt, knowledgeable, and not overbearing. Menu was varied and presentation was lovely, however most flavors were just so so including over salted fried chicken. Likely would go back for a second try based on ambiance and service...maybe my taste buds were just off that eve.
Amazing food and great service. We will definitely be going back to Wayfare Tavern. We had the burrata appetizer and the deviled eggs... both very good. Pork chop was amazing (Highly recommend) and the mac/cheese side was really good as well ... steak and side of mashed potatoes were average.
First off, I can’t believe this restaurant has been around for 8 yrs without me knowing about it. This has quickly become one of my favorite restaurants. The fried chicken dish at Wayfare is by far the best I’ve had in a long, long time. The popovers were also quite savory.
Fried chicken tasted really salty this time, disappointing. Love the menu and popovers. My husband had steak tatarte just ok, a friend tried the burger and fries delicious 😋. The salads and eggs were very good.
The right balance of dressy/casual is here. Tourists fall into the place filled with better dressed locals. It has its own little niche that makes it great. Hard to explain as it is in between a lot of different styles of restaurants. Great cocktails, service, popovers, food. Loved that I could get a smaller portion of the famous Fried Chicken. Killer Washington oysters. Also, the Beef Tartare was off the hook. Lots of moaning going on with each bite. Don't miss the donuts for dessert! Also, the coffee comes in individual French Press carafes for each person. Nice touch.
Fried chicken is amazing and generous portion. Pasta was unique, earthy and delicious. And mushrooms were amazing and also good portion size. Really nice ambiance too. Would definitely go again
Best Restaurant in San Francisco and service is outstanding
Wonderful experience! Food and service were both excellent.
love this place. go all the time. I pretty much know everyone there now. :)
Definitely a place for business lunches, but even so prices are pretty high for what you get. The fried chicken was indeed delicious but not nutritionally well-balanced which is surprising given the price.
Reservations were for 11. Restaurant was empty. Table wasn't ready. Service was really slow.
Wayfare Tavern is the first restaurant we go to when we visit San Francisco. We have been enjoying their food and service for years now.
Great food. Get the burger. Get the chicken. Do lots of sharing .Start with the tartar and deviled eggs. The popovers are awesome.
We never have a bad meal here. The fried chicken is our go to but everything else merits high praise as well. Can't go wrong here. Noise level is acceptable and actually quite good for an SF place. Great drinks, generous portions, and pleasant staff.
Although people have raved about the fried chicken, I found their pork chop was the star of the meal. Roasted bone marrow, sauteed mushrooms, peach cobbler ... everything was delicious. Wasn't rushed and my guests were delighted with their meal. Wonderful meal.
We dined at the Wayfare Inn twice recently and enjoyed our meals both times--except that the pappardelle was overseasoned with pepper and much too spicy as a result, overwhelming the mushroom flavor. The hamburger was too big for one person! But it was delicious, and the corn soup was a lovely blend of flavors: possibly the star of the menu, along with the justly celebrated fried chicken. The popovers are a lovely touch.
The food and service were excellent. However, $26 for chicken without sides is way too pricey. If the sides were included I would have given a 5 star review. I am accustomed to steak being ala carte, but chicken? I don’t care how good it is. $26 with a salad and side would have been more in line. I won’t be going back.
