All three floors of the restaurant have been designed keeping historical accuracy in mind making Wayfare Tavern reminiscent of a Victorian parlor and an Edwardian men's club, where anything goes from black-tie to blue jeans. Pull up a stool to the Chef's Counter at the open kitchen and look on as Chef prepares your lunch or head to the Library and Billiard Room for a game of pool. Wayfare Tavern is a truly unparalleled dining experience translated from a century ago. Photo: John Lee.

Great food and service
Our server ignored us most of the evening because he was too busy chatting it up with the table next to us. That’s fine usually, but he would never check on us, even after he was done with them. We tried to order more from the other staffers who came to bus the table, but they said we had to ask our server. But we couldn’t get his attention. He finally came to give us the check. No apology for being absent or anything. Bad service is one thing, but having to watch him be so chummy (and SO loudly!) with the table right next to us while ignoring us become very irritating.
More, the burger patties need more salt. The Brie needs to be more melted and the bun needs to be at least slightly warm. The chicken was just OK.
I used to love coming to Wayfare Tavern, but there are comparable places that treat you better.
Tartare was a large portion (too much to eat), and the ribs had a lot of gristle and some of the bones broke off into the meat and ended up in my mouth. Service was great however, and the prices aren't too crazy.
Al was an excellent bartender/server. Food excellent, especially new salmon preparation
Delicious comfort food! Updated traditional tavern setting.
Excellent San Francisco Restaurant
Really disappointing- food was good, but service was horrible. Wanted to order more, but getting attention was so difficult that we just asked for a check.
The chicken and waffles were heavy and unlike my first stellar experience two weeks earlier.
The place never disappoints.
For outdoor diners, they have heat lamps abs provide blankets! Came in handy because the wind was blowing strong!
Service wasn’t what I remember . We asked for bread 3 times and they still never brought it… waiters stretched very thin and service definitely suffered . Ended up canceling a few items as they kept forgetting. Bread was one of the main reasons we came there tonight along with some other favorite dishes but experience was definitely not there …
The food is outstanding. Ribs appetizer corn soup and fried chicken were so good. Doughnuts were melt in your mouth. Excellent cocktails. We especially enjoyed sitting at the bar, bartender was super friendly. The server however was a bit abrupt, not very friendly and even though we said we were celebrating our Anniversary (35 years) not one person mentioned or acknowledged it. Too bad because the food was spot on.
The service was slow and the server was harried and disorganized. It took 90 minutes to eat two courses. That is way too long for lunch.
Rude server. All other table got bread service, we did not. Hostess was also rude. Food was average. Hot tea was Luke warm. Long delay between food being served to each person at the table. No need to rush back.
Generally a favorable experience. Seated on time, servers were polite and responsive. Lovely dining room and happy to be eating inside again. The pop-overs were outstanding, as were the fried green tomatoes with crawfish picatta. But we both found both the chicken and the burrata potatoes overly salty. We understand that restaurants frequently use quite a bit of "seasoning," but this was enough that both of us noticed it. This was the primary reason for removing a star.
First time back in a year. Love the atmosphere. The fried chicken is really good. Not sure if it is the best in SF but really good. Sides were delicious. Donut dessert awesome. Last time I went my Old Fashioned was the best I had. This time it was too sweet. I asked that the second one be made a little less so; didn't happen. The waiter never even thought to ask how it was. I may be picky but...
Anyway, I'll be back may not order the Old Fashioned. I want to have a burger which looked amazing.
the popovers where delicious and the fried chicken portions were generous! lively atmosphere and the service was excellent. I would definitely recommend this restaurant and plan on coming back
I can’t believe I waited so long to try this great restaurant. Everything was delicious.
Such good food!!
Winners: Chicken, corn soup, asparagus and chocolate trifle!!
Loved it! Cozy, relaxed and comfortable atmosphere. Loved the decor, the music and especially the professional, efficient and welcoming service. The drinks were artful, strong and delicious. The food was excellent if a bit heavier and less imaginative than expected. Would happily visit again and introduce it to visitors and friends.
Lovely place! Ambiance and service were great. I enjoyed my corn soup, mac and cheese, and fried chicken; however, I kept thinking that the food didn’t quite meet the standards set by the service and ambiance.
I’m eager to return and try some of its other tasty-sounding dishes.
Great place! Loved that we could hear the music at our table outside. Drinks were great- amazing popovers. The fried chicken was good (not the best I’ve had but tasty). The donuts were also amazing! Overall I loved this place and will come again for sure.
Great food and amazing service. Our first outdoor dinning experience and our waiter put us at ease. Cannot say enough good things about WT.
Mashed potatoes with barrata is amazing
The bread could be a main course because that dough is fiyah 🔥
The fried chicken was cooked perfectly and the ribeye as well. Service was great and drinks were well crafted. I’d recommend this place to anyone.
Don’t go to this overrated, overpriced restaurant! We chose this place based on the reviews of the “amazing fried chicken”. We were greeted by a host that although we had dinner reservations for a table, try to force us to sit at the bar twice. We then were asked by another hostas who tried to sit us at the bar as well. We are getting explained we had reservations. We didn’t have a manager come and try to sit us at the bar block as well… Finally I had to stop the manager and say are you listening to your customer because it seems like nobody is, we have reservations at a table for a special occasion. The food was really some of the most bland and not to mention overpriced we’ve ever had. Not sure how people are praising the chicken.. probably to convince themselves it was worth spending $30 for it. Tbh, chicken at Popeyes is better. Overall, please go support truly authentic restaurants that are not overhyped. And save yourselves from this extremely lame place.. The manager offered us a free dessert for our troubles but that still could not satisfy the poor experience
Server was excellent. Food was very good. Burger and asparagus were excellent Caesar salad was ordinary.
We had the Travelzoo for fried chicken, as first time patrons. Outstanding! Our server was wonderful, food was delicious. Fried chicken, burrata potatoes, asparagus, lobster devil eggs and sangria. It was ALL good.
Everything was wonderful! Our server was fantastic and had a great attitude the whole evening.
Great date night spot. Best tavern in town!
Celebrated our anniversary with dinner here. Our waiter Zach was awesome -- great service from him & the whole waitstaff!!! Big shout out to our host, Jose, as well - he had an anniversary card on our table when we arrived. The food was fantastic, starting with the popovers - yum! Dinner was terrific, wine was great, & dessert was amazing: the donuts are literally desert "crack" - you'll be addicted! Especially if you have it with the French press coffee!
Would definitely recommend it to family & friends, and we'll go back again ourselves!
Excellent food and great ambience.
A very nice place to have lunch or a drink after work.
The only complaint would be a dining group who were very loud for a good part of the dining experience.
I don’t remember our waiter’s name but he was OUTSTANDING!!
Great ambiance! I really enjoyed the bread they serve thats free, and the donut was great. I ordered the fried chicken, and deviled eggs. It was tasty, and the quality was great. I only was a bit sad because the fried chicken comes with no other side, just the chicken itself. It’s a huge portion, and can definitely be shared by two people. I would have liked a sauce , or a side such as potatoes or greens. Service was great. Definitely dress business casual, or just a bit dressed up. Overall would come back!
Steak Tartare was the best I've ever had, bar None!!!
It’s always been good service and good food - dependable and comfortable.
First time ever the food took forever to make it to us.
I have eaten at Wayfare Tavern many times. This time was not a favorite. My friend and I shared the deviled eggs which are usually delicious. Although they were good, I just felt they had too much going on. I had the fried chicken, which is always a hit. There was no white meat this day, if that matters to anyone. My friend enjoyed the turkey wrap.
The service started out good. Water glasses filled and orders taken. Then we never saw our waiter again. Maybe he had too many tables? A different person delivered our food.
No one ever checked back to see if everything was ok or if we needed anything. At the end of our meal, I had to flag the waiter down to order 2 Irish Coffees. We had to wait 15 minutes for them!!! By that time, we had had enough......When the waiter finally showed up, I just handed him my credit card to pay the bill because who knows when we would have seen him again. He didn't even asked if we wanted dessert.
I'm hoping this in not the new post Covid norm. I'm chalking it up to just getting back on their feet and getting the rhythm back.
