All three floors of the restaurant have been designed keeping historical accuracy in mind making Wayfare Tavern reminiscent of a Victorian parlor and an Edwardian men's club, where anything goes from black-tie to blue jeans. Pull up a stool to the Chef's Counter at the open kitchen and look on as Chef prepares your lunch or head to the Library and Billiard Room for a game of pool. Wayfare Tavern is a truly unparalleled dining experience translated from a century ago. Photo: John Lee.

I was looking forward to trying this restaurant during my trip but the experience didn’t reach my expectations. The food was good but not exceptional. The big negative is the service and it started with the hostess who totally forgot about us until I reminded her that our reservation was at 8pm. It was already 8:25. If I was the manager, she’ll be fired. It took a while before we’re received the appetizers. At this point, it was late and I wasn’t super hungry anymore. I have to admit that the chicken was really good but the pork was ok. I was hoping to order the donuts for dessert but the waiter told us that only the chocolate dessert was available. It seems to me that the restaurant was short staffed and I really felt that it was run by a junior team. Will I return? No! There are many other options out there so why support people that don’t even care.
Overall experience was good. Had to send my hamburger back twice to get a "well done" and not red inside. Co-worker ordered "medium-well" and her burger came back looking like it was seared on the top and bottom only - SUPER red uncooked, but she ate that anyway...so gross! Waitstaff was AMAZING! Since I had to wait for my hamburger to be redone, he brought me a salad. After the first burger was sent back, he waited to see how the second one turned out before leaving the table. After seeing it was worse than the first burger he was quickly able to reorder - that's when he brought me the salad. So, overall good experience due to the waiter. The cook/chef, needs more experience on how long to cook a burger!
While the menu read as very tasty, the actual cuisine was rather mediocre. Service and seating were fine
Great food and good service. The beef tartare and popovers were highlights!
Outstanding food, incredible meat cooked to perfection. Eating was outside in a build out which was a bit cold. Can’t wait to return and eat the seafood I noticed at the other table. Excellent prices.
Of course the fried chicken was amazing. The salmon though was quite underwhelming for all the talk about it being a well known restaurant. Rolls came and writhing 1-2 minutes so did dinner. Think Rolls should have been a bit earlier to enjoy.
Unfortunately, it was obvious that they’re short staffed. It took 2 1/2 hours, and we had no dessert.
Very disappointed. Service was slow and inattentive. The music was very loud. So sad I took my dad there for Father’s Day.
The food was delicious. The outside dining experience was not up to par. The heat lamp did not work , our food took an hour to come out- a plate at a time. Overall we were at our table for 2 and half hours. The waiter took are order and never returned despite repeated efforts to get his attention. He came back after food came out.
I’ve gone several times to your restaurant and have always had a wonderful dining experience. Not sure if waiter was new but it did impact our dining experience.
:-( So disappointed, especially since we had a phenomenal time here recently.
3 weeks ago: service was excellent (very attentive w/o being overbearing), food & drinks were terrific, we had a fantastic celebration dinner!
This Time: service was seriously lacking, drinks were so-so, food was a mixed bag -- a very lackluster Father's Day brunch.
Details: Ordered drinks & artichokes to start. Drink order was not right - took 3 times & a trip to the bartender to get it fixed. Popovers were delicious - probably the best part of the meal. After about 45 minutes, the entrees came but we never got the artichoke appetizers, so we said to cancel them -- waiter said they were already done & brought them out after we already had our entrees One entree (Eggs Florentine) was missing the sauce, so we asked for a side of sauce -- despite repeated requests, took so long for the sauce to arrive the food was already cold. Ordered a second drink (Burr Mansion) before the entrees -- didn't arrive until after we were done eating & it wasn't very good (way too much ginger bitters). Chicken & waffles were good, although I think they sat a little too long in the kitchen before they came out, as waffles were somewhat limp & soggy by the time we got them. We were looking forward to the donut dessert, but given how the rest of the meal turned out, we decided to pass. Waiter apologized when he brought the check & said they were having a bad day, were short-staffed & lots of new staff.
Clearly a vastly different experience between our two dining experiences. We'll likely give them another try based on the strength our first visit, but, sadly, if it's anything like this time, we won't be going back again after that.
Footnote: I don't normally write a review unless a dining experience is exceptionally good or terribly bad, so...
We love Wayfare Tavern! We’ve been there several time and keep going back because the food is outstanding (our personal favorites are the fried chicken and the pork chops) and we’ve always had excellent service.
Great food and cocktails. Took a while to get greeted by server, but once we ordered service was very good. Music a bit loud for my taste.
Known for the delicious fried chicken, we were looking forward to the brunch choice of fried chicken and waffles. Surprisingly, the waffle and chicken were drenched in the Hunter’s Gravy and we were given the maple syrup separately on the side. The waffle and chicken were both extremely soggy and definitely not enjoyable. When this was brought to the attention of the server, he indicated it’s been the Chef’s decision to plate that it that way. I wish I would’ve sent it back so the that Chef could enjoy a sample of the soggy waffle and chicken. Never again.
The ratatouille cannelloni was bland and definitely not worth the price. Next time, it will be orders of the fried chicken all around as the chicken is always fried perfectly and delicious.
As it was Father’s Day, the kitchen was behind in food service. It would’ve been nice to be offered an additional popover.
4th time dining here and not the last. Service, ambiance, and food always fantastic. Cocktails and beer selections top notch. Our go to whenever we are in the city.
The food was perfect, the night was not. We had very slow service, the place was filled with lowbrow suburban underdressed types, the background music was way too loud right in our ear and interrupted by an ad at one point. It felt like we were eating inside a mall in Walnut Creek.
The food was delicious and the service was amazing. Our new go to restaurant when visiting San Francisco.
The entrees were very good as expected. Not happy with the grilled peach salad. The grilled peaches were not ripe nor caramelized and had little flavor. The salad dressing overwhelmed the dish and wasn't particularly thoughtful or memorable. We were not impressed by the host staff. In a word, they seemed snooty, like they were doing you a favor to seat you. Our waiter was very professional but lacked personal touches that make the dining experience memorable.
It's wonderful to be able to enjoy Wayfare indoors again....it's one of our favorite places!
All of the components for a good experience are present, especially, the fried chicken!
Outstanding food and service!
We love Wayfare Tavern - the food is always superb. However, the service was not good. The server seemed to be in a bad mood and annoyed.
Had another great experience. Our server, Brian, did a great job!
Took my hubby here for a Fathers Day brunch. Everything was DELISH! We both ordered the chicken and waffles. The chicken is AWESOMESAUCE!!! Best fried chicken in Cali!!! The waffle was just as good! Service was excellent as well!!!
I love this place, but with the new expanded size of the restaurant, it might make sense to put the host table outside. It was like walking through a mosh pit at a concert when trying to enter the restaurant. While my party ate upstairs, I can't imagine what it's like trying to eat in the bar area.
Food overall was delicious (shared fried chicken, the burger, mashed potatoes and green beans) but then we had to wait over 25 minutes for our check. Service by our waiter was very much lacking. Had leftovers wrapped and asked for an order of donuts to go. When we picked up our food downstairs, there were no donuts. Luckily we noticed it before we got too far away from the restaurant. When we pointed out the mistake, they seemed very lackadaisical/didn’t really apologize. A very poor ending to a special anniversary meal.
Incredible food and great service —everyone raved about It!
Celebrating My Mum
They seated us promptly even though we reached early. The dessert was amazing.
The food was definitely not good. We were there before the pandemic and it was much better. We will not go back.
First business meal post-pandemic and it was so good to be back at Wayfare. The food is excellent and the servers seemed genuinely happy to have people back.
Cozy atmosphere, threat food, friendly and professional service. I always look forward to the popovers.
Wayfare is a SF gem. Always great eclectic food and drink options, with impeccable service.
Graduation dinner. Chairs were cold and low. Asked for heat lamp near older folks who were cold and I was told no but given blankets instead. The salmon was super salty, veggies were overcooked, Caesar salad had WAY too much dressing/cheese, we had to send it back. Finally, the Mac & cheese was bland. We used to love Warfare Tavern and often went there for special occasions, but the quality of the food went down significantly. The menu was quite basic, not many interesting items to choose from.
I like the restaurant ambiance, historic building and charming dining rooms. Food was very good, but menu was a bit more limited than I would have liked. The ribs and chicken were both stand out of, but my husbands burger was over cooked, so he really didn’t eat much of it. The service was good and overall staff very friendly.
So fun. Delicious food. LOVE the popovers!
Another fabulous meal !
Sidewalk brunch was fine. Pineapple cake was great!
Food- Almost everything I have eaten there has been fabulous. The corn soup, Mac and cheese, hamburger, etc. are always unbelievable. This time I had French toast that was okay but certainly not what I have come to expect. The zucchini pancake was not exactly great either. A friend had the bacon wrapped scallops and said they were awesome.
Experience - we went to brunch on Saturday for my wife's birthday. There was a birthday card on the table for her, which was cute. We felt rushed though and it's not as if people were waiting to get in, the restaurant was mostly empty. That radiated from the staff and front of house manager. That was not appreciated.
Great job….service 5⭐️ and food excellent. Outside dinning was a great experience in downtown SF!
The food was delicious!
Service was good however when you have to ask for table to be cleared and than wiped off it take a couple stars off.
Great food and service
