All three floors of the restaurant have been designed keeping historical accuracy in mind making Wayfare Tavern reminiscent of a Victorian parlor and an Edwardian men's club, where anything goes from black-tie to blue jeans. Pull up a stool to the Chef's Counter at the open kitchen and look on as Chef prepares your lunch or head to the Library and Billiard Room for a game of pool. Wayfare Tavern is a truly unparalleled dining experience translated from a century ago. Photo: John Lee.

What Insiders Are Saying
Wayfare Tavern is an old-school spot in the Financial District. And we mean that in the very best way.
Food as always was excellent. Best pork chop I’ve ever had. But the service was a little slow. I think our waiter must’ve smoked a few joints before his shift. Lol. He was pleasant w a constant smile on his face but moved like a turtle.
A wonderful dining experience. The staff went out of their way to accommodate our party of nine. We were so delighted with our waiter, the menu, and overall experience. I would highly recommend Wayfare Tavern to anyone that would appreciate a perfect menu for all palette types. If you love fried chicken, this is the spot!! Thank you again Wayfare Tavern staff!!
For me, the real reason to go to Wayfare Tavern is to nosh on the popovers and share the fried chicken. Well, the other night the popovers were doughy, and the dry, tough fried chicken bore little resemblance to the flakey, crispy but succulent bird I remember from earlier days.
We had no complaints about the service, but the staff seemed hard pressed to keep up, from which I deduce that they were short handed.
So, is there any reason to return? Not any that I can think of.
Loved it. Chicken is amazing, mashed potatoes are crazy, and loved the Mac and cheese.
Service was attentive but food took forever to come out! Great once it did though!
Great food per usual but hostess initially couldn’t find my reservation. Said it was for 3 people and she finally found it, then seated us at a table for 2. We then had to wait for a table for 3 after reminding her that we had a reservation for 3
My fifth visit to this great dining establishment...fried chicken, burger, deviled eggs, drinks (non-alcoholic since we were having a business lunch), and dessert (homemade donuts). The food here is awesome and the service is immaculate. Get a reservation because walk-ups will have you waiting. I highly recommend Wayfare Tavern without any hesitation.
Loved the experience except for the heat level upstairs! Will just dine downstairs next time. Will definitely be back!
had a late lunch on Monday which was a slower time and day so received attentive but not intrusive service. Delicious cocktail, shared all our order so we could taste more things--the Fried Chicken, popovers and corn were the standouts.
As always, the Wayfare Tavern delivers the BEST fried chicken in San Francisco. I was having a craving for it for weeks and had to have it satisfied. Check, check! Can't wait to come back again.
Had the famous fried chicken and was good. All the hype and accolades was expecting a foodgasm and a wow factor.
Lovely service and incredible food!
Great casual atmosphere. Great service. Friendly staff. Good food. Loved the banana crème pie for desert.
The thing I hate most about restaurants is rushing you. We like to eat late a lot, and we made a reservation on 22:30 (10:30pm).
At some point the waiter kept hinting us that they want to close and rushed our decisions.
We ordered the prime rib steak. We ordered medium, and it arrived more medium rear than medium. The waiter told us the kitchen want to close, so tell him quickly if we want to cook the steak a bit more. Since he rushed us, we didn’t have time to check properly and we said it is ok. It wasn’t, we left half a stake un eaten.
Later while we are still eating the main courses, the waiter cam again and told us if we want any desert, since he want to let the desert lady go home.
All this rushing is really annoying and make you feel unwanted. Poor experience.
Regarding the food, it wasn’t great. As said, the steak was not cooked to our desire. The fried chicken we ordered was half half, some pieces were bone less and tasted bad, the bone ones were decent.
Would not come back.
Had a reservation, but sat for 30 minutes, waiting. Waiter forgot about us, the entire time. It was the worst experience we've had there, by far. Way Way Far....
Been there several times in past - from out of town and had great meals. We took friends this time and were very disappointed. Poor table, poor service ( obnoxious waiter) and food was so-so.
We had a lovely time for my friends birthday, and our server was super sweet and brought us dessert with a candle and we had a lovely time!
Pork slightly over cooked. Everything else was perfect.
We all ordered beers and the waiter brought us these huge beers and I wish he had asked what size. I felt up sold and didn’t finish my beer. Don’t assume.
My husband and I were celebrating our anniversary and we really enjoyed our dinner here. The staff were kind, gracious, and had a great sense of humor from the hostess to our waiter Brad. The food was amazing, delicious, and cooked with a lot of care and love. We can’t wait to come back!
Fried chicken and Burata Whipped Potatoes were amazing! And the Popovers were heaven.
We were seated by the fireplace and it was so noisy that we could not even have a conversation. We only had to wait 10 minutes for our 7:30pm reservation but the restaurant was super busy and it was a Wednesday night.
One of the best restaurants in San Francisco for food but not a good place for an intimate date.
This is by far one of the best meals I’ve ever had! The fried chicken was excellent the sides were fantastic and the service was impeccable. The atmosphere is warm and inviting.
The problem we had was ordering the prime rib special for two. The waiter described it as a 32 oz. steak, did not give the price. We received a steak to share that was way smaller than one would have expected. This prime rib, smaller than described was $125.00 with one side.
Great place for lunch, friendly staff , food delicious!
The best fried chicken - hands down - I've ever eaten. So amazingly good. Delicious sides (the burrata whipped potatoes are to die for). Great service. Accessible wine list. Just GREAT overall!
I used to love this place. Have to say it has changed from fine to fairly casual dining. The delicious fried chicken is also not the same
Get to your reservation early and sit at the bar to munch on homemade chips. Ordered 3 starters - Bone Marrow; deviled eggs (lobster pieces) and buratta/ fig. Bone marrow was really special - served with dark bread toasted with butter mouth melting experience. Steak was just as great.
Highly recommend the fried chicken - it is awesome!
Middle of the road. Food was actually pretty solid but service is a mess.
Expensive and slow service. Food was decent but definitely not worth the price
Great ambiance! Food was fantastic and service great!
The food was delicious, the ambience is very nice and lovely but it was probably the worst service I have experienced in a restaurant. Was very disappointed.
They did a wonderful job for my cousin’s birthday.
Great service, good people
I took a customer here for lunch. It's ALWAYS spot on with service AND food! The bread is so good...the fried chicken is so good and the crab sandwich special was perfect. The service is always great. This is a great spot!
Server wasn’t great, but the food was awesome.
A great vibe throughout the entire restaurant, fantastic decor that adds to your experience. I enjoyed my dinner and drinks and our server was lively and attentive!
We celebrated our daughter's 15th birthday with a dinner here at Wayfare Tavern with 3 of her friends. The food was amazing. Its a busy place and feels very energetic. We had seating on the first floor near the kitchen and were able to watch the chef and crew work up close. Great staff, welcoming atmosphere and amazingly tasty healthy food which was beautifully presented. For a good experience, with a welcoming atmosphere, have a meal at Wayfare Tavern! Thank you.
We loved our first lunch here! Friendly, informative staff & excellent food. We started with a glass of wine (me) & iced tea (hubby) to accompany the yummy popovers. Then we shared the lobster topped deviled eggs which were perfect. I couldn't resist the "best fried chicken in America" (and agree!) The burger & fries were also memorable. No room for dessert. We will definitely return the next time we visit San Francisco.
The popovers and fried chicken alone are worth the visit.
