All three floors of the restaurant have been designed keeping historical accuracy in mind making Wayfare Tavern reminiscent of a Victorian parlor and an Edwardian men's club, where anything goes from black-tie to blue jeans. Pull up a stool to the Chef's Counter at the open kitchen and look on as Chef prepares your lunch or head to the Library and Billiard Room for a game of pool. Wayfare Tavern is a truly unparalleled dining experience translated from a century ago. Photo: John Lee.

Truly terrific meal! Mushroom Risotto and Fried Chicken are outstanding. Healthy portions too.
The bartender was fantastic. Personable
Try the new Brunch. Food was very mediocre. Service tried hard but 1 Bartender 30 minutes to the first round really tried patience. Food was ok. Expected better was very excited about the new Brunch.
I was so looking forward to the fried chicken after hearing about it and reading reviews. It was a bit over cooked and quite pedestrian to be honest. The fried mushrooms were crunchier and delicious and we really liked the mushroom risotto. The sticky toffee pudding cake would have benefited more from a rich Caramel topping rather than the dark coffee sauce that it came with, but the donut dessert was a huge hit! We had coffee from the espresso bar and it was served HOT and was excellent quality.
The overall experience was not great. We were going to see Hamilton so I made an early reservation at 4:30. I was not informed that the dinner menu would not be available so that was disappointment #1 (it was a very limited menu). The place was definitely not business at 4:30 yet they sat us in the back corner right next to the server station, disappointment #2. This made the area very busy and my husbands chairs was bummed multiple times. In addition, they we’re fixing our table (table was wobbly) and the fireplace that I was sitting up against wasn’t lighting so someone was trying to fix it, disappointment #3. I do have to give credit to the food- pop overs were amazing as always and the burger was good!
The dining experience was wonderful with good energy from the staff. Food was delicious and just the right amount for the group. They went above and beyond to add to the birthday celebration.
Food is fine (not extra ordinary), service is fine (not fantastic), so, I would recommend this restaurant as a one time experience. But, if you have any hearing issues, or want a dining experience as opposed to an eating location, go some where else.
The food was excellent, especially the popovers. However, service was a bit slow and the noise level made it very difficult to have a conversation.
The best fried chicken
Great experience, like always. Truly enjoy dining at Wayfare. The service and food were excellent. Although for the first time, I did feel a bit rushed to leave after our dinner. Nevertheless, I’m looking forward to the next time I return.
We've been to Wayfare a few times, but this time we wanted to celebrate our wedding anniversary with a nice dinner. I requested for a nice "quieter" part of the restaurant, i get that they were busy but they sandwiched us in between and family with a small child that needed a nap and family of kids that spilled over to our section which is the opposite of what I had requested. It was kind of disappointing to say the least. We had a terrible 1-year anniversary dinner at Ad-Hoc, so I guess with Wayfare it just got a little better. I guess there's nowhere to go but up from here!
Terrific staff and outstanding food as always
Used to love this place, gone way downhill. Service was dreadful, light was out on stairway to restroom, food was mediocre. Won't be back.
We had an amazing time celebrating our 1-year anniversary at Wayfare. The staff went above and beyond to ensure we had a great experience!
Service was excellent. Food not so much. The fried chicken was ridiculously salty. The popovers were flavorless. The menu did it describe the chowder accurately. The mashed potatoes was more like potato soup. The burger was delicious.
Don’t think we’ll be coming back.
We were late and they were very accommodating. The service was wonderful. Unfortunately the food was not. The risotto just tasted like cheese and salt. The fried chicken tasted like salt. Basically everything was extremely salty. We were looking forward to this meal and we now all have sour stomachs.
We usually enjoy this tavern very much, however, this time it was not what we usually get. We had an early reservation so it wasn’t packed yet. The drink service is always slow but this time it seemed slower. The deviled eggs were outstanding as usual, burrata toast was delicious, our pop overs were not their usual hot, warm at best. Our second round of drinks took even longer. We were at the table for 2 by the back door and employees kept going in and out for their breaks which was annoying at best. The hamburger was disappointing. The bacon tasted liked it was precooked and barely warm as did the sautéed onions.
But the fries were great. Sorry to say this but it is an honest opinion.
Service was not attentive, very distracted waiter that made no attempt to enrich our lunch experience. Food was solid but not super.
Great ambiance, lively atmosphere, tasty food and very friendly service. I loved our table right next to the fireplace, it was very charming. I highly recommend this restaurant.
The Deviled Eggs are a fantastic start, and the Toffee Bread Pudding a great ending! Cozy spot and delicious food - a favorite lunch destination for us in the Financial District.
The braised beef short ribs were over done.
Apart from that, the dining experience was good overall.
The food was good with the exception of the mashed potatoes, they were more like soup!! Our server Sam was subpar. Server forgot to order our sides, we finally received them half way through our meal. Had to repeatedly ask for rolls which were not delivered until the end of our meal.
Had a great interaction from other people and staff customer service was spot on, food was amazing and overall experience was fantastic! WE WILL BE BACK!
Excellent choice. First off, the hostess was busting her butt from the start to ensure our table was ready. She seated us in the bar and gave continual updates as we waited, for a short 10 minutes (we were early). The only gripe, and I should have known, was our table was immediately in front of the gorgeous roaring fire, but hit damn we were hot. Service was top notch, food was fantastic and precisely what we expected. Filet on point, fried chicken a must, and don’t leave without eating a donut. The short rib app was to die for. We will be back, just not at the fireplace.
Excellent as always
We came for brunch and were not disappointed! My friend had the fried chicken and waffles and she raced over them. I had the eggs Benedict and they were absolutely delicious! I also had a Bloody Mary which came with a long piece of bacon - yummy! We will definitely be back.
Server did not inform us of how much food we we ordered. Could have easily shared some of dishes family style instead of not eating half of it.
Friendly staff and clientele. Relaxing atmosphere with high quality food.
Casual after work related dinner; the long cushioned bench seats were hard to get in/out of and because the tables were so long, the wait staff couldn’t reach and the middle person on each side had to stop and help...all dinner. That was annoying at best but food and drinks were good.
Despite is being slow and birthday celebration— no acknowledgement by waiter. The fried chicken was better when had bones
We had a problem with the hostess who checked us in and they seemed to forget about us. Another guy maybe the manager had to step in to get our table for us. Our waitress or the kitchen mixed up our order but they ended up making it right. Thanks for asking.
The chicken part (of the chicken and waffles) was amazing. The waffles were covered in a thick, gravy-like substance, rendering the waffles soggy. It was like eating wet cardboard. Waffles should be crisp on the outside...and soft and yummy on the inside. We asked for extra crispy bacon. Limp bacon was served. The breakfast hash was well portioned, and very tasty. The French toast sticks were more egg than toast...and left an odd taste in one’s mouth. The shrimp cocktail was good, but only 5 shrimp (usually 6 at most places) was served. It was fresh and tasty. The pancakes were OFF the hook good! Addictive! Too bad we had such a mash up of really good food...paired with really bad food....served by an indifferent server during a non busy time. We LOVE your dinner...But your brunch was a failure!
Wonderful evening! The fried chicken is out of this world. It’s my favorite restaurant and my favorite chef.
My husband and I were in San Francisco on our way back from wine country. Made a reservation at Wayfare because I read about their famous fried chicken. The weather was unseasonably warm. We got to the restaurant and were seated right away upstairs. It was so hot that we looked around and people were fanning themselves with their menus. My husband asked the manager if the HAVC was working and she said they didn’t have air conditioning in the restaurant. Then we realized that they gave my husband the lunch menu. So not off to a great start. We ordered the pork short ribs, fried chicken, broccolini, and the beef short ribs. The food was outstanding! I highly recommend going to Wayfare Tavern. I could not give a 5 star rating because we were so uncomfortably hot that it took away from the experience. It could be an anomaly, but being from NYC and not being in SF that often, it was just not the best experience. Having said that, our server was wonderful. She unfortunately got the brunt of our discomfort but I do want to say that she was very attentive and informative. If you want comfort food, and a great atmosphere, go to Wayfare tavern. Just sit outside or downstairs!
A little loud.
Family night in the city
Great lunch , the popovers are great.
I recommend the burger and the fried chicken.
Hearty food in a cozy environment.
Nice wine list.
Come here whenever I'm in SF for work. During the most recent visit, it seemed the long time venue couldn't keep up with its reputation and history. Our party had a reservation but was kept waiting for nearly 30 minutes for our table. Then service was unenthusiastic and perfunctory. Asked for one extra bread/popover and was told it would take 10 mins to make. Asked again when we saw the bread come out... but waiter ignored us. Asked a third time and gave up when they passed us by once more. Our party ordered the steak tartar (good), lettuce salad (tasteless and sad-looking), filet mignon (standard), and short ribs (was expecting tender but instead got dry, shriveled and rubbery). Overall, disappointing. This has become a place hoping to coast on its name and spending from out of towners.
Great food, great atmosphere! Always wonderful and consistent!
Get the fried chicken and the mushrooms - OUT OF THIS WORLD!
