Waves on Main - A contemporary Coastal American Steak and Seafood Ratings and Reviews
appetizer tiny portion and overpriced, bitter taste in crab soup, fluke topping way to spicy and strong for such a delicate flavored fish. We are frequent dinners and long--time shore seafood restaurant patrons. We have a life time of comparisons. they can (and must do much better in order to stay in business.
Food was great! Service excellent. BYO which is nice, in fact a local liquor store delivers right to your table. Biggest complaint - the air conditioning was broken and dining room was very uncomfortable. I would have expected the manager to come by and at least apologize but nothing.
We were extremely disappointed. Their website says "classy elegant" and it was anything but. We went for dinner early Saturday night and the A/C was barely working, so it was very warm. The hostess seated us and right away we noticed a very tacky stand with a mic where it looked like someone was performing. Right away I asked to be moved to the other end of the restaurant as we did not want to be near loud music. The host assured us this would be background music and very soft. It was NOT background music. I feel very bad as the performer seemed like a very nice guy and meant well, however he played very loud and then started going up to the tables and egging people on to sing. This was HORRIBLE. I felt like I was at a tacky bar on karoke night. Even our waitress was mortified. The cilantro rice had no cilantro and was soft and without flavor. They served steamed broccoli topped with spicy Velveeta like cheese. HORRIBLE. This was for a birthday dinner for my 80+ mother in law and we didn't stay for coffee because we all could not wait to get out of there. What a waste.
We enjoyed a selection of fish dishes - fluke, salmon and swordfish - as well as the pork chop. All were cooked perfectly. The calamari app was excellent - and a surprising sweet chili sauce which is a nice change from the traditional fried with tomato sauce for dipping. A good value as BYOB and the meals including soup or salad. Wait staff were friendly. Definitely worth another visit.
4 of us (2 couples) had the worst dining experience. We called in advance and they said they would make sangria from the wine we brought. They didn't. The menu on line is their old menu so many items not available. Soup was brought to the table and we were told if it was cold they would MICROWAVE it. My filet mignonette was good but I was too upset to enjoy it. My coffee had unknown elements floating in it and I had to ask for a different cup. Even our waiter, Urie, who only works there once a week couldn't believe what was going on. The 4 of us thought about leaving with such a poor beginning but we stayed hoping it would get better. Bad decision on our part. Very disappointing costly experience .
The lighting was extremely bright in the restaurant, I would compare it to shopping at Costco which does not bode well for good ambiance. They did dim the lights at 9:00, but this was the time we were leaving the restaurant! The food had no flavor to it, and the steak was tough and chewy. The value was poor. I would not recommend this restaurant.
Went to Waves on Main with a $15 off coupon that they sent in a Value Pak. Coupon was good on Wed (the day we went) and til June 30 (we went Apr 27). We sat down, they brought bread to the table, I showed the coupon to make sure it was valid, and they refused to honor it "that week" since it was Restaurant Week. The coupon had no restriction listed on it re not valid Restaurant Week, so how would a customer know that? Finally, after alot of nickel-and-diming us, the manager said he would make an exception JUST THIS ONCE! (as if we were doing something wrong) but we would have to order from the Restaurant Week menu, not the one on the back of the coupon (which is what brought us to this restaurant. The Restaurant Week menu was very pricy and 3-4 courses (much more than we wanted to spend and eat!). So they opted to let us walk out rather than honor the coupon and regular menu. Very bad treatment...especially in view of the fact that we were the only two people in the restaurant.
I took my wife to Waves on Main to celebrate Valentine's Day. It was our 1st time. I decided to go after sending an email, via their website and Chef Mike called me twice personally to answer my questions. Great customer service. He told me during our phone conversation they were going all out for Valentine's Day and true to his word, they did. Everything was perfect from the minute we entered the door. The hostess handed my wife a rose and took us to our table which was elegantly set. They had live music that night as part of the package and I will say it was a perfect accompaniment to a wonderful dinner and an overall memorable experience. The package that night was a price fix for a 4 coarse meal. My wife chose shrimp cocktail as her appetizer. She received 3 jumbo shrimp cooked and chilled perfectly with a nicely balanced cocktail sauce. I was more adventurous and chose the jumbo crab martini. I was so glad I did (and so was my wife). I received a martini glass filled with jumbo crab neat in a light cilantro lime vinaigrette. The vinaigrette was just enough to taste a bit of cilantro without over powering the delicious crab. (I couldn't keep my wife's fork away) Next came the salad; my wife ordered Sweetheart Salad; it was well presented, crisp, delicious and enough for 2. I ordered the Classic Caesar, again, enough for 2. Caesar salad is one of my favorites and this was the best I've had in almost 30 years. My only disappointment was there were no anchovies accompanying the salad. For the main coarse, my wife ordered the 16oz. Strip Steak which arrived perfectly done to her liking, tender and flavorful. I ordered the Lobster Tail Cioppino, which was cooked perfectly in an arabiatta sauce with scallops, clams and taglioni and easily pleased this Italian's taste buds. For desert we chose the Triple Chocolate Bypass served w/ N.Y. style cheesecake for 2. It was a perfect ending to an exquisite meal. Thank you Chef Mike, we'll be back!
Food and presentation were excellent. The service… not so much. The restaurant was not full, but service was quite slow and seem disorganized. The wait between when we finished our appetizer and the arrival of our dinner was approximately 25 minutes. Others seated around us were brought bread upon being seated. but we were not until I requested some to go along with my appetizer (mussels in a seasoned broth with chorizo, which was excellent). By the time the bread arrived 10 minutes later, I was long finished with the appetizer but still hoping to soak up some of the broth. Unfortunately, as our waitress placed the bread on the table, another waitress grabbed my plate and took it away. Overall the wait staff seemed to be in a great hurry to clear the table off when they determined that we were finished with a particular course, but were not in any rush to get the food out.
Don’t let our experience frighten you off as the food was excellent, and the presentation was particularly elegant. But don’t be surprised if the service and the overall experience leave you feeling that some more work needs to be done here.
Was able to get a same day (Saturday night too) reservation for 4. Immediately seated to a nice table. Food: taste was excellent, portion sizes large, prices on the spot. Service was somewhat uneven as the waitress was nice but seemed a bit confused. Long time between salad and entree, but conversation was good and noise level was not a problem. Entrees of Tuna w/black beans and veggies, jerked Salmon and braised short ribs were all excellent. Appetizers were also good and large. Overall would repeat and recommend to others. Only suggestion is to turn off the music from the bar (no one was sitting at the bar, plus its winter and restaurant/bar has a seasonal liquor license so BYOB -- and no reason to be playing music).
I had a very enjoyable evening with friends. First time at the restaurant. I loved the atmosphere. Food was awesome. Service needs some help, seems there was only one server for the entire restaurant. Otherwise food was good, and the atmosphere was just as good. Definitely a nice neighborhood place to meet up with friends!
My first experience here and on the whole it was very pleasant. I came in for an earlier dinner before others started to show up. The three courses, chowder , Caesar salad, and pan roasted cod, ranged from good to very good. My one issue was with the cod. it was in a half inch or so of liquid which drowned the kale and white beans underneath the cod, as well as some of the fish, itself. I really wished it were dry as the cod was quite delicious. As my meal progressed, I noticed several families coming in; the restaurant seemed very kid-friendly, to me,
Food. .notably Coconut shrimp
Busboy/runner guy. I asked the waiter for 3 items that never showed up (water, doggie bag, dessert menu). Then eventually asked busboy who was great! He saved the meal honestly! Super friendly too.
Horrific service. He wouldn't even make eye contact with us. He literally did not look at us from the time we ordered til 3rd course. The ONLY reason I tipped a proper amount is bc I am assuming he tips out to the busboy and kitchen staff, who did great.
Over 45 min between appetizer and soup.
2 servers for entire restaurant on new years eve.
Get rid of waiter
Lock side door. Table was right next to it and despite sign saying to use front door, people kept using it. It was like 35 degrees out.
Warm the bread. $55-65/ per person....please warm the bread.
Remove extra place settings from table. We were 2 people at a 4 person table. Ice bucket hardly fit. .this is why!
I think this place will be great like matisse was, but give it a few months to get into a groove before you go!
Waves in Main , in Belmar, (formerly Matisse- We were told new chef.) was wonderful ! Food presentation was lovely and delicious . The staff was very nice and very attentive. Never had to ask for a thing. I had scallop shrimp combination over risotto. My husband the halibut, which he said the best he has ever had. We both had a Caesar salad but could have shared it as it was a large size and also delicious, ( we will do that on next visit so we can add an appetizer). I highlyrecommend this restaurant. Nice casual atmosphere. Will be going back and considering have my next special occasion there.
PS: It is a BYOB but a local liquor store will deliver should you forget .
This is a new restaurant in the space that Niccio's once had. It has been redecorated very well. Almost no one was there when we went for an early dinner, so it was quiet. The service was excellent and friendly, and the chef/owner came out to talk to us. I marked the food at 4 stars because the crab cakes had mustard seeds in them, and this gave them an odd taste. This unusual addition to a crab cake could usefully have been mentioned in the menu, I believe. In general, though, the food was quite good and showed care in its preparation.
great.great.great. great food, great atmosphere, great people. crab cakes were awesome. banana foster boat for dessert awesome. BYOB great and awesome. restaurantweek menu had tons of choices. Since its new, Best of luck on the new restaurant and we will be back.
Went for restaurant week. Happily surprised all around. All dishes for the two of us were tastier, larger and more well presented than the menu description foretold. Clam chowder app was "2nd best ever" by one on a perennial chowder search; they didn't scrimp on the shrimp. Chocolate cake dessert was a tasty work of art. Also mind sauce on the cod might be sweet to some but I found it a tasty combination. Recommended an we'll be back.
This was my first visit to Waves on Main during Restaurant Week. This location had previous tenants, however dining a Waves on Main is a pleasant experience. The hostess, waitress, restaurant manager frequently checked with the diners. The menu offered a nice selection of appetizers, entrees and desserts. The food preparation was superb! This is a top notch restaurant not to be missed!
Saturday night Restaurant Week. Technically, our first time there. It's BYOB with a wine list selection from a local liquor store that delivers to Wave. The atmosphere was disorganized, unfinished and very loud - not just conversations but obnoxious music and TVs. We waited to be seated about 15 min past our reservation time. We were then seated at a table, literally the first one going into the dining area at the pathway for all busboys and servers walking by to other tables. We watched EVERY one of them go by at least a dozen times, without any acknowledgement, contact or even water for another 15 minutes until we reached our patience level and we got up to leave. The manager who had shown us to the table saw us leaving and asked if no one had served us, apologized with no other comment and we left - disgusted. This restaurant has changed names, and presumably ownership and management, three times since Hurricane Sandy. Whatever has been done, it's not enough. Certainly not enough for us to drive almost half an hour for that kind of treatment. There are plenty of other much better options competing with them. So, we went to La Dolce Vita, also in Belmar at the ocean, where we have gone dozens of times, with no reservation, were greeted by Guiseppe who couldn't do enough for us. Great table, even by a large group who were gettng louder per glass of wine, we could still have a conversation. Great JSRW menu and fabulous Sicilian wine. Very different atmosphere fron Wave. Locals don't need to feel like we're being treated like down-the-shore summer transients. We want to feel welcome and expect to be treated as the valuable patrons we are. We wouldn't go back to Wave if it were free.
