Watts Grocery Ratings and Reviews
I especially like Watts Grocery because I am somewhat of a regular there and I know some people who work there. I like their take on Southern Food, and the fact that they use all fresh ingredients, which are sourced mostly in NC. The service was great, and the whole table loved the fried oysters and the day-boat scallops. One person got the Vegetarian option and liked that.
I visited Watts Grocery many years ago and had a wonderful experience. When a friend suggested it for brunch, I thought it was a great idea. Unfortunately, I thought the food was much less flavorful (and plentiful) as it was years ago. The prices don't reflect the quality of the food. I ordered the burrito and it was so-so. I could have gotten something better and cheaper from Elmo's Diner. The coffee was $3 and just okay. The churros were cold and stale tasting. Truly the only good thing was the chocolate sauce that came with the churros. I'm not sure if they were having an off day or if this is what folks can expect nowadays. I was disappointed.
Awesome! Watts always delivers the best Tbone steak.
The fried oysters were outstanding.
And the warm rolls ....after ordering a second basket, and consuming them in 7 minutes, we decided the rolls are better than a hot krispy kream. OMG.
This was a first time dining experiences for 5 in the group. They kept saying. "What a place".
Two members of our group ordered catfish. It was fun watching them smack their lips.
I'm in love with Watts. What a great eating place.
Had a wonderful lunch at Watts Grocery. Service was super. The food was fresh and delicious. I had the grilled tuna taco & it was outrageously good!!! My friend had soup and fried green tomatoes for lunch hers was very good as well. Perfect lunch with a friend.
Was there for lunch at noon. One large table and maybe 3 other tables filled in the restaurant. Did not get lunch for almost 45 minutes. Wait person explained the large table (maybe about 10 or 12 people) set the kitchen back. She was sorry. The 2 fish tacos at $13 were pathetically small with a little tasteless filling inside and the rice was almost cold. No offer was made to address this exceptionally long wait time which caused us to rush and leave.
I heard of Watts Grocery for a couple of years but always had a hard time justifying the 35 minute drive to try this place. We were attending a concert nearby that evening so we decided to give it a try, and we weren’t disappointed. The service is subdued & professional, and the dishes are prepared with great care and originality. Highly recommend any of the entrees and the starters were delicious too. We had to leave before we could try the desserts but hopefully, we’ll try them next time we go.
The food was good and the waiters were attentive, but the hostess rudely asked my group to leave immediately towards the end of our brunch because she needed the table. Even if it was acceptable to directly ask diners to leave for this reason (which I do not think it is), she could have been much more reasonable about it. Instead of any hint of being apologetic about the situation, she accused my group of staying past the reservation's "time limit of 2 hours" and causing a line of angry people who wanted our table. I've never heard of any reservation coming with a time limit on OpenTable, and even if that were true, we'd only been there 1.5 hours. I found it ridiculous all-around and defeating the point of a leisurely Sunday brunch. I get it, Watts is busy, but that's the case every weekend. I'm personally never going back, I have no need to be treated this way.
I usually have a good experience at this restaurant. Unfortunately it was not the case last weekend. I tried the cabbage wraps and they were bland. We had mixed reviews with the duck, one friend said it was ok and the other claimed his was too salty. Wine was good and the appetizers are always on target. Salad options were limited and the desserts were not very appealing. The service was great excellent. Too bad the food didn’t meet expectations.
Worth Going to
It was our first time in Watts Grocery and I must say it was quite pleasant. We had a very nice dinner with friends. There's not a whole lot of ambiance, but although there were a good number of people for a Wednesday evening, it was terrific that we could actually hear what our friends were saying without having to talk loudly. Service was attentive but not overbearing or rushed; both the starters and diner meals came to the table within expected time parameters. The Yellow-Fin and the Scallops were wonderful. Wine list is a bit limited but gets the job done. Pricing is fine for the quality and quantity you get. Definitely recommend going. Not "OMG" good, but very worthy nonetheless.
Should have ordered the pancakes!!! They looked amazing! I have been to Watts twice before for dinner and loved it. Brunch was eh. However, there was a wait and I had a reservation. When I told the front person I was catching a plane, they couldn't have been more accommodating in getting us out the door quickly. They were terrific. So I will be back for dinner another time, but I'd skip the brunch...unless I order the pancakes!
