Shrimp & Cobb Salad on Brunch menu a must.. pancakes filled up a never filled up 20 year old Grandson & the collards are special! Definitely will make a return visit!
Took my girlfriend there for her birthday and the brunch was amazing! Staff was so helpful and attentive....thank you!
Watts Grocery is nice, but I'm still the undisputed Queen of Breakfast Gravies!
We took my parents while they were in town. The NY strip was excellent and my wife’s shrimp creole was good. I would gladly go back.
We both ordered the dinner duck, which was tender and delicious. Minimal fat, the entire serving was perfect.
A fantastic brunch. We had 7 and a wide variety of meals - basic breakfast to shrimp and grits. The grits are beautifully done. You can tell they use very good stone ground grits. Biscuits are amazing as well, but hard to pass up the in-house made english muffins. Coffee is very good with frequent re-fills. Kids to grandparents will love it.
Watts Grocery keeps delivering outstanding meals! Chef/owner Amy Tornquist is a Durham treasure, and one of my absolute favorite chefs around - always a delight to dine at Watts.
Was excited to try Watts Grocery, we hadn't been to this part of Durham for dinner before. Service was decent and our waiter was attentive. The wine I ordered was the best part of the meal, along with Cream of Mushroom Soup. The market fish is broth was really not good at all. Way way way too salty. And the little clams were so fishy tasting, not appetizing at all. I took a chance and ordered dessert, the whoopie pie smore with mexican chocolate ice cream. The ice cream was good. The whoopie pie tasted like it came out of a vending machine bag, not fresh at all. And dinner plus drinks for 2 was over $100. I don't mind paying that much for a great experience and great food, but this was definately not worth it.
I have not been to Watts Grocery in a few years, but I used to think it was a very good restaurant. This time, all of the food was extremely salty. The fish dish was uninspiring at best, and the hush puppies were greasy and burned. What a disappointment! Especially for the prices.....
My friend and I were seated for several minutes before our server even acknowledged us - it was moderately busy when we arrived; however, we would have understood if she’d stopped by to give us a heads up. That didn’t occur until about 6-8 minutes after we’d been seated. After taking our orders, she was not very attentive and never even came to check on us after a Server Assistant/Food Runner brought our food to us — honestly, the gentleman that brought us our food attended to and communicated with us more than our actual server.
Other than that, the food was good. I just wished they would take the tails off of the shrimp when serving the shrimp and grits.
Food was amazing! Service was slow. Great drink special
Family in town. Had an amazing experience and would have loved to sit and relax there all night. Will be back
That specialize in terrific local produce, which is a great treat! THANKS!
The experience started by being seated in what I consider to have been the worst seat in the house. When I make a reservation I don’t consider a seat right in front of the door to be a prime location. Service and experience went down hill from there. My partner and I took a look at the menu and decided on an entire. My choice the Pan Seared Bass, his choice the Lobster Tail, only to later find out that we were given an out of date menu. “Sorry guys, we don’t have the Lobster tail.” From here we went with the catfish and Bass. Oh and forget about asking to substitute or add a side item, we were told that the kitchen was too busy for that. Wow, I’ve never heard of a thing, if it’s on the menu then the kitchen no matter how busy it is should be able to prepare it. Isn’t that the reason for dining out in the first place? Both of our meals were lackluster meals.
Overall this place sounds good, however when it comes to the culinary skills they are missing. The staff could use a couple of lessons in customer service as well.
Very nice meal and conducive to our business conversation.
The food and everything have been consistently delicious in the last half year I've gone to Watts. I've especially been delighted at the after dinner drinks - light but really tasty! and beautifully presented. But the fish has been good as well.
Impressive dinner and service on a busy night (Valentine's Day). We'll definitely return and are excited to find a new brunch spot!
I always love the food here. The Mac n cheese with lobster is so so so so so amazing. The lobster dish...omg...thr lobster is ocean perfect. If they increased their portions, i would eat here weekly.
My wife and I enjoyed our Valentine’s Day lunch. The food was very tasty and healthy. We will return to Watts Grocery soon.
Fantastic meal, as always. Watts never disappoints.
Terrific challenger to Vin Rouge for best brunch place. Tends to be a bit loud but not unbearable considering there are lots of kids.
I suggest to make a reservation if you are going on Sunday for brunch. Prompt service and really good food.
All was very tasty -- had lobster mac and cheese (could be a meal, not an appetizer), local braised lamb shank -- perfect.
Service was so so. Food was so so. Ok experience but expected better.
We had a great time celebrating restaurant-owner Amy Tornquist's late mother, Elizabeth, on the second anniversary of her unexpected death. Percentage of day's profit was contributed to an endowment in Elizabeth's name at the Nursing School at University of North Carolina. Lots of retired and currently involved staff from the Nursing School were there and that was fun.
While it does not (and hopefully never will) affect me, there are few (if any) vegetarian offerings on Watts Grocery's menu and I wish that would change. Otherwise, the options are excellent.
p.s. by "vegetarian" I mean "no flesh" (which includes fish)....nothing with eyeballs either.
We went to honor Amy's mother, and Amy welcomed us. Food and service were excellent as always and all of our desserts were FABULOUS.
We enjoyed brunch with our daughter.
The hostess was so very nice!
We had the best grits we’ve ever eaten!
Everything was cooked perfectly and delicious!
Will definitely come back again.
Using the Open Table app is so easy and efficient!
And it allows you to see all the places you have booked for repeat bookings.
I was so excited to go to Watts Grocery for Triangle Restaurant Week, but was pretty disappointed with their food. This was the first time we had been there, and wanted to give it a try, as we had heard great things. Our wait staff was kind and attentive. The food, sadly, was very one-note. As appetizers, we had the mussels and the fried green tomatoes. The mussels were not cooked very well and were chewy once we finally got them out of their shells. The fried green tomatoes were fine, but the sauce they were in was very salty. For the main course, we had the Butternut Squash Risotto & Fried Trout. The risotto was good, but very earthy. Not a pop of brightness, which is what was needed. The trout was good, but needed more raita or something to make it a little less bland. Our desserts were quite good. We had the panna cotta and the chocolate peanut butter cake. These were both AMAZING. I don't know what they do to the cake, but OMG I wanted to jump into the plate. And the panna cotta was also amazing. They can be very overdone, but this was perfect. The flavor was amazing and our hats are off to the pastry chef.
One thing I will tell you that is AMAZING is their cocktails. We had the sangria, the Montpelier and the Hissy Fit. All were very different but delicious! The bartender knew his stuff! I would definitely recommend this place for their desserts and their cocktails. The food, sadly, wasn't amazing :(
The appetizer and entree was fresh and delicious. I came for the mussels and vegetables in Asian broth and beef short rib and greens were delicious for restaurant week. BUT for those of us that can’t eat a lot of sugar desserts because of diabetes please offer fresh fruit cup alternative. So I could not eat the dessert I paid for.
Great service, food was delicious. Went during restaurant week.
The food was delicious and the service was excellent. We had the Restaurant Week selections and each had a different appetizer, entree, and dessert and sampled each other's choices. Everything was delicious. The only criticism I have is that our area was cold--there was cool air blowing on us.
The shrimp and grits is divine and the atmosphere is very pleasant. The service is excellent.
I thought service was a little bit slow, but overall it was a great evening. The food was outstanding
Pleasant meal, great experience.
Restaurant Review Week for lunch. Menu and our selections were outstanding. Service impeccable. This will be a frequent stop for me in the future.
Food was excellent, however the temperature of the food was a bit cool. The waiter was not very knowledgeable of the menu.
I was entertaining out of town cousins, and wanted to find a distinctive place that would allow us to visit in a relaxed manner. We arrived about 15" early, were immediately escorted to our reserved table, and had a fabulous meal! Server was helpful with recommendations. The food was memorable, and the atmosphere terrific.
We went to Watts Grocery on a Saturday night, but the restaurant was out of a number of menu items, and even certain cocktails on the menu. Overall, not a great experience when you go to a restaurant on a Saturday night and countless menu items are not available.
service from gregg was fantastic & very accommodating to our desires. drinks were also super-tasty. overall, an extremely positive dining experience.
very nice! and one can choose a lighter menu if you want. Plus the after dinner drinks are fabulous!
