Watermark on Main in Ventura, California is owned by Kathy and Mark Hartley. The building itself is nearly a hundred years old. It has been updated, but still includes many original features, like the original bank vault that now serves to hold top shelf wine and liquor. The rooftop lounge is very much rooted in the modern world, though, with a distinctive contemporary flair.
The menu at Watermark on Main takes its inspiration from many parts of the world. You can enjoy fried calamari, Kobe beef sliders, Texas "five chili" chili, carnitas peueno, pizza du jour and ahi tuna poke and avocado relish salad, ham & grits and shrimp & gorgonzola egg rolls, just to offer a few suggestions. Of course, there's also a fabulous drinks menu to choose from at Watermark on Main.
Ordered a calamari appetizer and it was horrible. No seasoning, cold, overly chewy and discusting. Sent it back for some chip and salsa appetizer. The chips were hard, over cooked and cold. The salsa was whatever. I would not recommend getting appetizers there. Didn't order any food.
I've been to the Watermark several times and have never disappointed. We went for my birthday. I had the Lambchops and they were fantastic. Get the crembrulet for desert it is some of the best I've had.
Our waiter was excellent.
I rave about the Watermark. Have been going since they opened, for many different occasions. I make a 40+ mile drive in traffic, just for Happy Hour or to listen to Shawn Jones upstairs. I took 3 new friends (6 total that night) and none of us were very thrilled with our food and service was a little slow (probably due to being upstairs and the only group, but loved being able to experience it). Not gonna lie, I was a little disappointed.
I'll be back . Pretty sure it was an off night. I certainly hope so!
Went to the Watermark for my wife's birthday with a friend on a Saturday night. Usually do a sit down there once a year and have always loved the decor, ambience, service, and food.
Ironically, our experience this time mimicked some of the recent reviews. Our server was fair, at best; not a restaurant professional that you would expect at a place with these prices. Her attention to detail was lacking and when she was at the table, she stood there babbling for long periods of time. Not quite up to par with this restaurant or what we have experienced in the past, especially for a Sat night.
The three entrees were presented well, in a timely manner, and two rated good. One dish that our friend ordered, Ahi Tuna with crusted cashews, was on the soggy side. The Chilean Sea Bass dish that is highlighted on the menu was not available.
After the meal we went up to the H2O lounge on the third floor. Couldn't help notice a number of people with baseball caps (with tee shirts) there. Sounds prude like, but if you look at their homepage it states that their dress policy doesn't allow baseball hats.
Overall, it seems that the Watermark is sliding a bit while living off of its past reputation, and the top notch ratings that it used to get.
A place to be enjoyed without children. Ambience created by leather, wood, old art, and friendly people. Our waitress, Linda, was great! Not to leave out the other servers and hostesses - all were the best! The food delivers like nothing else. Try the lobster pot pie, salmon, market salad, and house salad. Tried this chocolate covered strawberry, which was stuffed with cheesecake. Just deadly. After that little flavor monster, we had little room for anything else except delicious French press coffee. No need to fly to San Francisco to find great food. Make a reservation at the Watermark, and save the airfare.
Note: I have not even mentioned the 3rd Floor for music and drinks. Well, words cannot say enough for having a good time. Enjoy!
Great find to enjoy the Ventura scene and excellent food. Perfect spot for music lovers.
I found the restaurant on Yelp and once I entered it get the 5 star description! Beautiful place and the staff was great! Food was amazing and defiantly going back. Pricy, but worth it!! :) love this place!!
Located in an old bank building, I like the look and feel of the place.
Service is nothing short of stellar and the food is well prepared, consistent and delicious .
We've been there several times and have really enjoyed everything. This time food was not great service was ok and we were disappointed .
Wonderful restaurant. Great for special occasions and foodies. I was looking forward to having the sea bass. Very disappointed in the new recipe. The sea bass was sitting in broth with some asian vegetables. Fish still good, but the rest was not my taste. The macaroni and cheese to share was outstanding. Bread also fabulous. Worth going!
I was there two years ago and remember the everything was wonderful.
this time the salad came before the appetizers the macaroni and cheese was cold in the middle.
it was a little bit too warm for my taste but, everyone was so nice that it made evreything ok.
I guess I would try again to see if it got better.
Had dinner with a group of six this past weekend. Service was poor, and the food was average. The server was trying, but just couldn't cut it. I had high expectations based off reviews, but the whole experience was very sub-par. We were also told there was no Lobster on the menu anymore, then a server brought one out to another table. Slow service with average food - not worth going back.
Service was beyond awful and I mean atrocious!! Certainly not what you expect and what is supposedly the nicest restaurant in town. The waiter, Jim and absolutely zero skills as a waiter, seemed more like a engineer who was filling in at the last minute. Unacceptable for a restaurant of this caliber and price.
I am not the type to write a bad review, particularly a local spot that I want to love but the terrible service really put a dent in a friends bday dinner.
Ambiance was great, food was a tad above average but not the level it should be for the price.
All in all a major disappointment, will not return and will not reccomend.
The Watermark always sets a tone of high quality for food, wine and attentive service. Consistently superior dining experience.
Came for our 15 year anniversary, we were pretty disappointed. We heard so much hype about it. My husband loved his 1/2 dozen order of oysters. I only took one bite of my food. The server seemed put out that I didn't like it. I didn't want my money back or a new order. So, I have no idea why he had tude. We didn't get a chance to go upstairs and that was the man reason for coming.
Server was very friendly and checked on us often. Really great service and great food.
Very tasty food with classy presentation. The server was very attentive and knowledgeable. We enjoyed the evening with friends.
Beautiful and elegant décor. The service was excellent and the food great. I took my partner there for his Birthday and we had a wonderful time.
We were there for brunch. I ordered eggs Benedict. The hollandaise was OK but the eggs were tiny, the meat fat and way spicy and the english muffin was not toasted enough. The coffee had no punch and I had to go around the corner after we left, for espresso. Nice building, but that wasn't enough to warrant a return.
Start with their creative cocktails, very comforting and heartwarming on a chilly beach night. For appetizers, we had the bread with two delicious butters, and roasted wild mushrooms with buratta--where else can you get such delicious apps? For dinner we had the lobster pot pie, again, perfect for a May night. Dessert was creme brulee with salted caramel topping, and carrot cake for my niece's birthday. Such a wonderful celebration!
Had another great time before, during and after dinner at Ventura's finest establishment. Dinner was superb, the cocktails were delicious, and the after dinner entertainment upstairs (the Bomb, actual group's name) was great.
Will definitely be back.
Worth the 25 mile drive on the 101! Always a favorite spot.
Our dinner was excellent! We went upstairs and danced the night away. Fantastic evening with Friends!
If you are looking a great place in Ventura I would think this is the place. It's an old bank with lots of charm. The steak I had was delisous. I'll be back
Rib eye was great, lobster pot pie awsesome, calimari very good...vegies cold. High price. Best waiter ever!
Delicious food and friendly and prompt service. The salmon was succulent as were the accompanying fixings. The Bloody Mary was awesome as well.
It was too early for the rooftop dining but for brunch, I'd highly recommend!
We had brunch here for the second time last Sunday. Service was excellent! Ambiance was great, easy to talk to each other,etc....
We will suggest it to friends as a really good place to go in Ventura.
PS The pain pardu was NOT custardy inside, disappointing as that is what the menu describes and why it was ordered.
We went to Watermark for my husband's 75th birthday. Our waiter, Chris R, was wonderful. He was knowledgeable, attentive and fun. We would ask for him again. We had rack of lamb, scallops, and lobster tail. We all enjoyed our meals. The Watermark special salad was delicious, but very large. Chris split it for two of us. The desserts were a highlight: chocolate chip bread pudding, vanilla bean crème brulee, salted caramel crème brulee (my favorite), chocolate indulgence, and a chocolate covered strawberry with a candle for my husband's birthday. It was a wonderful meal and wonderful experience.
We enjoyed our dinner at Watermark. It was a Saturday evening and very busy.
We had great service and excellent food. The only drawback is that the restaurant is very noisy. We will try again during the week, to see if the noise
level is better.
The cost was way too high for what you got. Small portions, very small side dish, but $30-$50 for the main course. In addition, although the restaurant was nearly empty, we were seated right next to another couple at a table 1 foot away. Weird. Ambiance was nice, but there are places with comparable food at half the price.

I took my girlfriend for a nice romantic valentines dinner. The hostess was nice. We were ask if we wanted bread, so we said yes. Drinks took a while. Appetizer was awesome. The waiter was not observant in our table. Bread finally came towards the end of our meal. Service could of been better, it wasn't that busy for Valentines Day.
We had tried the watermark a few years ago on valentines day. It wasn't that good. So after a few years we thought we'd give it another try. Well it wasn't any better. Our waiter was incredibly awful. If we needed anything we would have to ask a waiter from another table. Ours never came by our table. When my wife had finished her first glass of champagne he walked by picked up the glass and walked away. Never asking if she'd like another one. And that, other than taking our order, was the only time we saw him. Then when the food got to our table it was cold. When you're paying those amounts for a steak it could at least be warm. Not to mention the mashed potatoes were cold, not just not warm, but cold. Last time I give this place a chance.
Excellent service and food. Waitress remembered us from the past and was very attentive and helpful.
Beautiful historic building, but.... service is fair. Order got screwed up. Seats are too low for the tables, so you feel like you're Alison in Wonderland after she took the pill that shrunk her. Not great for eating. No beverage menu offered. Uninspired menu, not very healthy. There are so many choices on Main Street, I'd choose another
First and second floor dining with great food and super staff. Bar drinks are terrific. Third floor is a rocking bar and you cannot hear a thing when dining downstairs. I loved this place and will go back again soon!
Food was good. Service was excellent. Noise level was unbearable. We were stuck with a small table on the second level next to a large party. The noise was so bad, we could not hear each other.
We had heard positive things about Watermark and finally tried it, as it was our anniversary. We arrived earlier than our reservation but had no problem getting seated. The waitress allowed us to take our time with a drink before ordering and we never felt rushed, even though they had seated one very large party right after us. Food was fantastic, small portions (fine with us) similar to French restaurants. The total bill was much higher than most places we frequent, but for a special occasion, it is definitely worth it.
The food was delicious, Our waiter Chris was great! Beautiful building! We will be back! Best Martinis!
Excellent cuisine and impeccable service. Beautiful space. Fun roof bar ambiance.
