Water Grill - Santa Monica Ratings and Reviews
The food is good but very pricey. Nick, our waiter did not appear at our table for more than 20 minutes. Fortunately, we were able to get hold of an assistant who took our drink and then our food order and was very helpful. Not sure how long we would have waited for Nick. When he finally arrived, no apology and he didn't acknowledge keeping us waiting. Restaurant had nice crowd but was not packed. Need to do better at this price point.
Friend I went to Water Grill to celebrate birthday dinner, first time visit. Great location on Ocean Ave, with a large open windowfront, from which diners could see a beautiful sunset sky through the palm trees across the street.
Enticed to try the restaurant based on the DineLA menu choices, my friend and I both ordered and enjoyed the clam chowder as our starter. However, it was disappointing to have our entrees brought out to the table while we were still having the chowder; poor timing and this should not happen. We had to move our soup bowls to the side to make room for the entree dishes, and then rush through finishing the chowder to start our main courses. My friend had the mahi-mah, which was small in portion and looked somewhat bare on the serving dish, but tasty. I had the cod, which was served with fingerling potatoes and red cabbage. The cod was delicious but the few potatoes were actually over-cooked and dried out.
We chose the bread pudding and key lime pie for desserts, both good but not remarkable in any way. Another disappointment was the lack of recognition of the birthday celebration other than the comment after the desserts were delivered: “Your birthday present will be not having to hear me sing.” That might’ve been funny/ cute IF there had been minor acknowledgements like a candle and a “ Happy Birthday, enjoy your dessert” statement. But, there was nothing. Disappointing.
So, while food and service were ‘okay’, the dining experience was not up to par for an upscale seafood restaurant, and overall disappointing...with the potential to be much better.
Fantastic location and busy place for sure. Make sure you have a reservation. There was a LA weekly special menu with very good option BUT my favorite remains the GRAND platter with oysters, mussels, shrimps. Excellent quality and it comes with good bread and salsa.
I have been to the Water Grill before, both to the one in Santa Monica (which I prefer) and also downtown. This review is regarding the restaurant in Santa Monica. The overall vibe was one of welcome and accommodation. We were a party of 7 and a little late, but the hostess was very nice and friendly, without even a hint of being upset that we were a few minutes late, and got us seated right away. Our server was very friendly and helpful, and certainly was a big part of our overall great experience. The food was very good, for everything that we ordered. The no corkage fee was a huge plus and in summary I would say it was a wonderful dining event, which I will encourage others to experience for themselves.
Usually a great meal and one of my favorite restaurants. Very disappointed by the food quality this past visit. My salad was drenched in dressing and sauce and my crab cake had almost no crab in it (all bread), which is not on par with their usually quality. The manager did remove the items from the bill and offered dessert. All other meals here have been excellent, but probably won’t be back for a while after this round.
My son and I decided to eat dinner at Waterfront on a weekday evening during vacation.
We valet parked and the attendants were friendly and professional.
We ordered the FRITTO MISTO (Seafood Tempura) appetizer, which could easily work for a party of three or four, it was well proportioned for an appetizer. It was good with the sauces.
My son ordered the Sea Bass and he's not a fish lover. He loved it! I ordered the steak as back up but will definitely order seafood next time.
We shared a mac and cheese as a side and it was creamy and rich and good.
The caramel bread pudding for dessert did not disappoint. I especially liked the salted caramel ice cream (or was it gelato?) on top.
Service was great and timed well. Order seafood at the Waterfront Grill and enjoy a pleasant meal in a warm and inviting atmosphere.
we both ordered the super expensive Chilian Sea Bass and it came to our table not fully cooked particularly in the middle of each piece. It wasn't flakey and tender there as one would expect because of the undercooking. We asked that it be taken back and cooked more. It was brought back to our table and we could instantly tell that nothing had been done to rectifiy the situation other than perhaps putting it under a heat lamp. It was still under cooked and somewhat cooler since it had then been a longer time that it had been away from the grill or searing pan. I ate mine because I was to hungry and disappointed to send it back the 2nd time. My wife could eat hers at all. It was a very disappointing meal because of this.
We dined at Water Grill on New Year's Eve. WG was busy even at 6:00 pm with a line out the door. We waited about 10 min to be seated. There is no good place to wait. We were seated at table/booth at the window which during daylight would have a great street and ocean view. It was difficult to hear the server because of the high level of noise. WG appears to be the place to eat for shell fish especially oysters. Our party of 4 had mahi, sea bass, and swordfish. We each ordered a wedge salad that was 1/2 head of lettuce. Our server should have advised us of the size to encourage sharing. The wedge salads, however, were the best part of our meal with tasty bleu cheese and bacon. Our fish selections were merely okay with the sea bass being best and the mahi being the least appetizing. Observations and lessons learned: the filet mignon served to a nearby table looked excellent, sides are intended to be shared (this appears to be the norm in the LA area), water from the tap is called "still" as opposed to sparkling. Speaking of sparkling we enjoyed a bottle of Napa Valley Brut. It was served by the sommelier who was very personable. This was a good selection. WG's wine list is extensive, excellent, and expensive.
It’s a big box tourist restaurant right on the beach drive. That’s the main attraction. Highlight : Oyster selection was large and very fresh. Lowlights : grilled octopus appetizer inedible due to extreme saltiness (and I love salt). Mains came cold. Server must have been too busy as it’s a big place, as per above.
Friendly, pleasant and fun staff. Beautiful restaurant. Food top to bottom were great. Aged ribeye was awesome, Brussels sprouts delicious. And chorizo clam app was extremely good. Definitely would recommend water grill. I found it on google- and didn’t disappoint! Great job!
It was great, except it was freezing and windy when we arrived for our reservation at 4:30; the manager would not close the open wall of windows because the sun had not yet set! We were all freezing. They did offer blankets, but come on, if it's cold, we can see the sunset through the windows!!!
The food and our server was outstanding. She anticipated every need and we did not have to ask for drink refills.
We had the oysters, fritto misto, mahi-mahi , shrimp, tuna poke and a burger ( there were 4 of us!) all outstanding. Recommend the Pisco sour, the Sancerre Rose and the Cider.
Our visitors from Chicago were very pleased!
It was so cold with all the windows wide open that we couldn’t even enjoy our very pricey meal. We were shivering. I eat out a lot but this restaurant was not pleasing to me. The clam chowder was heavy in base and there was one clam in it! The salad Nicoise tuna did not look fresh and was not generous in size for the expensive price.
