Water Grill - Santa Monica Ratings and Reviews
This was my third time to the Water Grill. Each meal has been a bit worse than the previous one. I had Swordfish. It was dry and over cooked. Plus, it had a blood vein. Quite frankly, for the prices charged for the fish entrees the fish should be served well trimmed and well prepared. It’s not like the portion size is so large to begin with. The service was excellent and the restaurant is beautiful, but more needs to be paid to the food.
So happy with our experience! Took my wife here for date night, it was perfect. Dinner and two drinks each was over one hundred dollars but I knew that going in. (Just be aware) BUT in our opinion we felt that was more than reasonable! Our server was from Romania and she was fantastic, my wife was a bit chilly because we are at sunset, and the waitress brought over a knit blanket for her! The food was out of this world and the drinks were great too. But by far the service was what put it over the top. Amazing atmosphere, my wife and I left saying it was one of the best date night dinner we have ever had!
I have been to Water Grill several times, but this time was a disappointment. A friend and I met for lunch--both of us had been before, together. We ordered wine (she had one glass, I had 2), I ordered the 1/2 dozen oysters selection, and we each had the shrimp Louis. The salad was a small plate of butter/romaine lettuce, a deviled egg, and some cut up shrimp. Nothing even remotely special (go to Lobster for a great Louis). $24. Each. Not close to worth the price and our bill came to over $120. And we had to send the salads back once because they forgot the shrimp--obvious omission since the salad was nothing but lettuce and shrimp. Very disappointing experience at an otherwise excellent restaurant.
The fresh Halibut entree was beautifully prepared, just excellent. The wait staff seem preoccupied, difficult to get their attention thru-out dinner, the restaurant was not particularly busy. The wine-by-the-glass pricing was the most over priced I have ever seen. Ever.
The location on Ocean Ave. is very nice, the restaurant nicely done.
This is a rather casual restaurant with premium restaurant prices. The food had ups and downs--the crudo salmon was *awful*, the chocolate dessert was very good, other dishes (poke, crab legs, octopus) were mediocre at best. Service was responsive but careless, and the restaurant would not substitute an item on the crudo sampler that we were allergic to, even at a higher price.
Overall, to anyone who had been to downtown Water Grill, a sizeable disappointment.
Delicious food - we had shrimp and grits, orechiette with shrimp and halibut. Wines by the glass expensive. Location wonderful - especially as can see the sun setting over the ocean. This is a great go to place for special occasions or when you want really well prepared food.
We dine here when we are in Los Angeles. The first night I had local mussels with garbanzos in a delicious broth with lightly sautéed Dover sole with lemon and capers and a small salad as a side. The second night I had charcoal grilled octopus in a homemade tomato purée and Santa Barbara spotted prawns with homemade coleslaw for my entree. Both nights I drank Roederer Estate champagne and had the rice pudding that has fudge sauce and cherries at the bottom 💕
The seafood was great. Very fresh and my Littlenecks tasted of the sea. I ordered seared scallops on a cauliflower purée with a side of charred baby carrots seasoned with chili oil.
As I said, my food was delicious. I just really thought the restaurant would have been a bit more elegant like their restaurant downtown. Except for the delicious fresh food, I could have been in a chain restaurant. I was just wanting the dining experience to have been more gracious. Service is very fast, adding to that chain restaurant feel.
Water Grill is very good food, the little of it they choose to give you. Our service was incredibly polite, but actually ineffective. We ordered drinks and appetizer and finally got the appetizer but no drink until we finally gave up and pointed that out to the waiter. He gave us recommendations on the food, including that the side dishes were large so we had ordered enough. This was wrong as the sides were 4 pieces of the squash we had ordered and, combined with the classic high-price means small portion main courses, left me having cereal at home to get filled after paying $200 for 3 people to have dinner (we didn't order wine).
Lots of experience at the Water Grill, here and downtown venue. Usually very good. Last night really bad. Really bad. Excruciatingly long delay for any service post seating. Ordered about a dozen oysters which took 30 mins to serve, and then additional wait for horseradish and sauces. Then start into room temperature oysters and the dreaded "tangy" taste. We stopped eating them but didn't totally head off turned stomachs later in evening. Entrees arrived: very mediocre swordfish and shrimp/grits, which we had little appetite for and didn't inspire much attention anyway. Visiting family occasion was a bad time for Water Grill to have a very off night. Maybe it was an isolated thing but great restaurants charging these kinds of prices can't really be excused for lapses of this magnitude.
This was the last night of our California road trip, and we wanted something a little special, including seafood, and the Water Grill did not disappoint. After a couple of excellent cocktails (Sunset Mimosa and Pisco Sour) we shared the 'Deluxe' iced shellfish platter. This was more than enough as a main meal shared between two. This was the best meal we had in the USA during our two week trip.
been here several times and it never disappoints. food is incredibly fresh and delicious, prepared expertly. they just added a new dessert... caramel/sea salt bread pudding which is the most incredible thing i have tasted in years. i would go there just for that!!! service was awesome and friendly. never have a complaint going there.
I have enjoyed downtown Water Grill on several occasions and was looking forward to similar experience in Santa Monica. The ambience and location are lovely. Our waiter and the entire staff were outstanding. The food was not simply disappointing it was absolutely horrible. I did not recognize the shrimp louie salad. It was not a pleasing presentation - wedge of iceberg salad, shrimp not completely cleaned!, mushy tomatoes, dried pieces of bacon on the side. (The avocado was good). The scallops my friend had were tasteless and mushy in a bland cauliflower sauce. The lobster appetizer was passable. We did not finish our meal because we were full but rather because it was so awful. The birthday cookie- cake with ice cream given to one of our guests was the only good part of the meal.
Over priced for what you receive. Food is average at best. Waitress pushed the halibut, which I ordered. Unfortunately the halibut was over cooked. Started with the heirloom tomato salad, which was very good. Herringbone restaurant a few blocks away is in the same price range but with much better food.
