Went for my husbands birthday.
Lobster were amazing even though a bit on the pricey side.
It was a bit noisy so you would have to scream a bit to hear each other but the food made up for it.
The foods are very fresh, the halibut cheek is awesome, the lobster is also amazing!
Very nice decor. Good service and excellent cuisine.
We had to send one of our meals back which they took off the bill - chips were black and fish was raw in the middle. Come on guys these are the basics when working in the industry. Disappointed and wouldn’t return.
This was a great find, and our hotel concierge noted that it was one of his favorites, along with their sister restaurant, Meat on Main. We were there to celebrate someone's marriage, and we were seated in a cozy booth that fit 5 perfectly. The bread was fresh, hot and plentiful; our sever was attentive; and all the seafood could not have been more fresh. Highlights were the oysters, the king crab legs, the steaks, and the peanut butter ice cream!!
Great place with amazing food & service
Great seafood and good beers and friendly service and ok coffee
I thought you guys validate parking, portions are small and pricey...nevermind
We made an 8:15 reservation through open table. We arrived 1/2 hour early and told to check in 20 minutes for our table. We checked and we were told that the people had paid and they were just waiting for them to leave. 1 hour later and three trips to check with hostess (even though she said she would get us at the bar) , we were finally seated. We ordered two different dinners (waitress said, “can’t go wrong with the most popular two dishes”) and when the dinner came, we had two of the same. They replaced it. Then ordered another drink and the margarita came completely clear and two birds full. My boyfriend tasted it and could not drink it. Returned it to the bar to thus dismay of our waitress and when she brought it back she said she thinks they forgot the lime juice. Slow, slow service and this was 9pm. Noisy place . Expensive dinner and should be more enjoyable. Would not go back.
Overpriced wines and cocktails. We cook better at home.
We made a reservation for 7:30 and arrived on time. We let the hostess know we had arrived for our reservation. We waited on the side while they cleared a table for us. As we stood by they started seating people who walked up. A group of four people were made to stand by us. Their drink orders were taken, ours were not. We asked them how long it may be to be seated because other people kept being seated. They checked with the hostess and another 15 minutes went by and we asked again, they said let me check with the hostess. No response back, I checked with the hostess she said soon. We waited 5 more minutes and without acknowledgement, we left. They called me 15 minutes later and told me our table was ready. Ridiculous! And they checked us in, which was wrong because we didn’t eat there.
I am torn between giving a negative review for the service and a positive review for the food.
The food, which should be the most important part of any review. We ordered the Wild Spanish Octopus for an appetizer. The pureed tomatoes and olives combined with the Octopus was delectable. The pureed composition was also a nice spread on the delicious bread served.
I ordered Wild George's Bank Atlantic Cod Fish and Chips. I was a bit surprised to find only one piece of medium sized fish on the platter. The menu price of $30 was a bit high for the portion provided. Economics aside, the batter and fish were tasty. The batter crispy and not oily. The fish tender and flavorful. The chips were hot and appeared to be freshly sliced potatoes.
My wife, ordered the Wild New Zealand Pink Bream and had it charcoal grilled. A side of Roasted Butternut Squash was also ordered. The fish was cooked perfectly, though a few bones were left behind when filleted. The fish was full of flavor, don't know what seasonings were used prior to grilling but they were neither dominant or overbearing. The fish was delicious. Same goes for the squash. The quinoa that the squash was nestled on was also delicious. The squash was excellent. Be warned, this item is served at room temperature.
We ordered two desserts, bread pudding with salted caramel ice cream and maple cheesecake with sour cream ice cream. We only tasted them at dinner. Took most home.
So, why only 3 stars? Well, it took forever for our appetizer and entrees to arrive at the table. So long was the delay that management comped our entire dinner. To which we were grateful for and fully appreciated. The server (a gal from Wisconsin), whose name we either did not get or have forgotten, was excellent and sympathetic to our plight. Apparently, the kitchen is not designed to handle the volume of diners this establishment can accommodate, seating-wise.
Would we go again? Not sure. Definitely not on a weekend evening.
This is our 3rd time back recently and the food, service and cocktails are consistently good. We have only ordered the seafood towers but great quality and value and the fresh warm bread is a plus.
Great location huge menu for seafood lovers.
Meat too. Good wine selection.😎
I took my girlfriend here for her birthday and as a date and the fish was extremely smelly and had a really gross consistency. The cooked it properly but it just tasted really gross. Everything we ate like the octopus (had flavor but was charred badly) or the cod (which was smelly and extremely unpleasant) all had good aromas and scents but just lacked the taste. Highlight of the night was by far the crab cakes (aka the only thing I would ever go here for).
We had friends in from out town. There were here only for one night; we wanted to show them a bit of Santa Monica. The dinner was SO disappointing. There were 5 of us. My entree arrived before soup was served - in fact my entree was the only thing served. They took it back. Then served soup. Entrees came and my salmon was raw and needed to be returned for cooking. It arrived as everyone else finished their main course. It was a disaster. Our waiter tried to make light of it - saying a table of 42 were being served in another room (not my problem). Will never go back!
Nice Resataurant. Will reccomend for Sure. Good food.
Our first time there. We wanted to get oysters and it turns out they have a tremendous selection. They were great. We had a waiter who was very knowledgeable, attentive and funny. Except for the noise level (I wear hearing aids) it was a wonderful lunch. I will have to find an excuse to go back soon.
Beautiful dinner with spectacular service from Jeffrey and TonyAnne. Will definitely be coming back
The whole fish I had was AMAZING!
The only downside to the whole meal was paying the price I paid for the amount of food I received.
The food and service were phenomenal. The view was also amazing. Would definitely go back.
Normally we really enjoy dining at Water Grill in Santa Monica, but this time we were extremely disappointed with a few items we ordered. The Uni toast was Definitely not really uni toast. We were expecting toast with a full piece of uni on each one, but that was not the case. $17 is too much for a few tiny pieces of toast with uni flavored butter at best. There was zero uni on this toast. Next the crabcakes had hardly any crab in them. They were basically breadcrumbs with a little bit of crab mixed in and a few other things to bind it together. The best crabcakes we’ve had were at the sorely missed Hungry Cat restaurant in Santa Monica. Their crab cakes were mostly crab. Not so at This Water Grill location. For the sister restaurant to their Michelin star restaurant in downtown, this is embarrassing. Also the Japanese butterfish was not what we expected and seemed under seasoned and underwhelming. Maybe I was expecting something different, and that contributed to my disappointment.
That being said, We ordered a plate of muscles which were delicious as well as the medium size fresh lobster. Also delicious. The clam chowder was too thick, but tasty. The wedge salad was so yummy of course. And we had a few other nice items that I can’t recall.
Our service was friendly and efficient, and free corkage is always a plus! Plus who can beat the view?! We will definitely be back, but I hope that some of these things can be rectified or at least maybe they were just a fluke the night we came.
Thank you for having us, and we hope to be back again soon.
Fun dinner spring break with my daughter
Great restaurant. We visit every time we are in LA
Oysters Rockefeller were excellent. Fresh seafood was all really good. Atmosphere was nice, and waiter in the bar area gave great recommendations. Waiter at table was not as attentive but ok. We will be back. Restrooms were somewhat public even though required a combination.
Une très honnête brasserie spécialisée dans le poisson avec des vins de Californie très honorables. Un rapport qualité prix correct sur Ocean avenue au cœur de Santa Monica.
Often go there for special occasions. I love Lobster and they serve it steamed with cole slaw- reminds me of Maine-home of Lobster!
My husband had swordfish with spaghetti squash and loved it.
Service was great as usual;
We had a lovely table by the window. Perfect Easter Lunch.
Florida crab claws were fresh, blue crab cake had way too much bread in it. Clam chowder was good. King crab was fresh, big, and tasty. We had a reservations and tbey sat us by the window. They were super busy and they have a big bar, so the waitress did her best to tey and pay attention to us. Overall very good experience.
Super ok. Waste of money although the server was very, very Nice.
Nice enough spot for a bite. Incredible selection of oysters—most choices I’ve ever seen at a restaurant. Only one of the six I tasted had shell in how it was shucked. Horseradish isn’t grated, more fluffy and either that preparation or it was old because it didn’t have heat. Octopus appetizer was OK, it’s in tomato sauce, plate tasted a bit reheated. I’d return for oysters and wine but probably not for entrees. Easily walkable or valet stand out front.
Great food awesome service!
Huge selection of very fresh seafood, and very good service, but exceptionally noisy (had to yell to carry on a conversation) and so dark that it was hard to read the menu
Thank you for making my wife’s birthday wonderful! Great lobster roll and king crab claws and wonderful deserts! Thank you for great service, food and ambiance!
I was not very happy with the service. We arrived to the table and there were bread crumbs all over the chairs and booth area. It took an hour for our oysters and clams to arrive at the table and the waitress did not come to the table to explain the delay. The food is fresh but over priced for what they deliver.
Not too bad value for money.
Actually disappointed with the reception. I come often with my boyfriend and we also bring family/friends when they are in town. Tonight was the final night of a friend and we wanted to show her our favorite restaurant. I received a call a few days ago to confirm my reservation, and I called back today (after noting when I made my reservation on Open Table to get us a window seat, if possible) to confirm and spoke to a gentleman. I also brought up the fact that I had noted to be seated by the window and even said if possible to him too and he said YES I SEE THE COMMENT, we have you all set to be seated by the window.
Long sorry short, we get there and the hostess tells me the table by the window is reserved for another party and they do take special requests. We are then seated in the back towards the restrooms and i kept thinking how contradictory the hostess’ comment was and un accommodating. I used to work in the restaurant industry and I know if there was an error in communication, as a hostess , you do not shoot w that to the client and find a way. It also ruins the chances for a good tip to the server which I of course did not neglect because I know it wasn’t his fault.
Overall great place, great food, but please train your hostesses to reflect the professionalism of the rest of the restaurant. And, I never write comments.
Disappointed. Crudo sampler is super bland and disappointing. Need some acid to balance the fish as the creme fraiche is not enough to offset the fish especially the tuna as it didn’t taste fresh and slightly odorous. Fish is lukewarm. I was not happy and left most of the sampler plate. Crab cake has ots of breading and barely any lump crab. Coming from DC MD VA area, this was not good. Oyster Rockefeller are undercook so it tasted lukewarm. And the top is slimy spinach. I prefer either if you want uncooked, have raw oyster. Oyster Rockefeller has to have higher heat so that it is somewhat uncooked but smoky, grilled spinach with a touch of melty Parmesan. None of that. Limp, soggy and lukewarm. Also had the clams. Those were decent. It left us little incentive to continue with entree order.
It was okay. Water Grill used to be fabulous. The waiter was super attentive.
For hubby’s birthday. Everything was great from start to finish.
Great service as always. Mahi mahi was a bit overcooked this time but they changed it out for the yummy scallops with a tasty cauliflower side dish. (They do creative veggies in yummy sauces.) Great wine, fun romantic atmosphere with an awesome view, and we had a delicious 10 year port wine and dark chocolate mousse for dessert.
