Have been hear several times this was the worst service ever! Sommelier was great but waitress was awful! It was a $400 dinner with a waitress that should work at Olive Garden!
Although the oysters are great I won’t be back!
Great Fish.. ..not cheap...fresh fish never is...
haven't been there in a while....still a great
Noisy noisy noisy—table conversation was very difficult.
Our server (Rowan) was truly outstanding and the ambiance of the restaurant lovely.. but even with a reservation, we had to wait ~20 minutes to be seated. The food was very good... but could be improved. My co-workers really enjoyed their halibut with a citrus cream sauce. My black cod was perfectly cooked... but just needed some more flavor with a marinade or sauce. The mac & cheese was fine... but again needed something more... a sharper cheese, perhaps. And the dessert (bread pudding), which was said to be excellent was actually rather heavy and dense. Also the bread for the table was also simply not fresh.
Birthday I love. The food
I like the vibe in this restaurant but the prices are ridiculous. That said the place was packed. I know Water Grill has some of the freshest fish that comes into L.A. and I do think it's very good. However, $50 for a piece of fish with no sides is ridiculous. I stopped going to the Santa Monica Water Grill because I just was tired of paying their high prices. I went to an event in DTLA and thought why not? Well that's the last time I will ever go there again unless someone is on an expense account and treating and even then it's not that special.
The food is very good. Appetizers, entrees (they have a great seafood selection) and desserts. My family enjoys Cioppino, so we had 3 orders! One nice thing is that the food is served at a nice pace, no rush as one goes through each course.
I ordered soft shell crab. It was the worst ever.
Excellent meal and courteous service.
Very loud. Service was very slow and not even close to the level of former 1-star standard.
The Water Grill is the best seafood place in DTLA. The drinks are a little too expensive for what they are and the service this time was very slow. Still, the bread is good and the seafood is fresh and generally well prepared. The one thing that is always outstanding is the oyster selection.
Great good! Always consistent.
Love the food. Especially the tuna poke and bread pudding. Service was really slow Sunday and the restaurant was not busy. A little disappointing. Could be just a one time thing because other times the service has been great.
It was amazing
I love this place, but service was very slow this time. Drinks came out slow and so did the food. It could have been an off night because usually it is not like this.
Water Grill is an excellent seafood restaurant. I love the energetic, bustling atmosphere. The service is attentive but not overly so. The food is fresh, vibrant, and modern, without being stuffy. I would easily go back for a special occasion or just a night out with friends or family.
Only recognition that this was a special occasion was the hostesses greeting.
The server changed after taking our order without comment.
Personally main course was the real turn-off. We changed reservations to this restaurant because they were serving soft shell crab. Whoa - I’d never cook and serve this item without first cleaning! What a turn off.
Dined at Water Grill downtown for the first time in a few years prior to a concert at the Disney Hall. I asked for a relatively quiet table when I reserved, and was seated in a suitable place. The seafood options are diverse, very fresh, perfectly prepared. There is a long list of fresh oysters, and a number of excellent fish choices, as well as adequate non-fish/seafood choices for the unfortunates who don't eat food from the sea. My oysters were excellent, surprisingly well-priced and my husband's wedge salad (with a thick slice of a perfect beefsteak tomato and crisp bacon bites) would be enough for many couples to share. We both had soft shell crab (2 per order) served with an excellent and refreshing watermelon and cucumber salad. The cheese rolls served with our excellent martinis could become addictive. Service was excellent, not rushed, and we were on time to the concert despite walking up Bunker hill.
Best food I had in a while! The service was superb. The only thing I would hope for is a quieter area to do a little business.
Poor bar service. Our first course was over before our drinks were delivered. Seafood (oysters & soft shell crab) was very fresh and good tasting. The banh mi was a disappointment. Very thick and doughy baguette with few pickled vegetables and no cilantro.
Very bad food. Most dishes were mediocre (like the lobster)
Outstanding restaurant. Every time I go there itnis amazing from the service to the food
This was our second visit to this restaurant and it did not disappoint. The steamed clams with chorizo is a favorite. The atmosphere is sophisticated and fun.
Can never go wrong at the Water Grill. More expensive but worth it.
Outstanding in every facet!! Service, food, ambiance (slightly on the loud noise level side) were all exceptional. Our server Coronado did an outstanding job ensuring we had not only great experience, he ensured we had a great experience. Highly recommend the black cod (awesome) and the halibut, can't go wrong with Water Grill.
I used to frequent this restaurant when I lived in LA. I had to kill several hours before getting on LA freeways and decided to stay for an early dinner. The food is always good here... but I had really bad service... The waiter was there to take the order... and from there on out... only other people to deliver the food (they brought the appetizer at the same time as the salad, strike 1)... and after I'd consumed my glass of water... no one was around to even check about a refill... no one returned to see if the $42 piece of fish was any good... etc. Needless to say... I will find somewhere else to frequent the next time in I'm in downtown LA.
The food was excellent, the service was not. Normally great food and service but today they were not busy, so I am not sure why it was so slow.
Menu items and food excellent - service is a 10. Especially food if you are a seafood lover. I had the Swordfish and it came medium which is just the way I like it. Most places cook it through and through so that it dries out.
Great raw bar selection. Very fresh ingredients from salad to fish. Care in the details. Fantastic service.
I was not in a rush but service was rather slow. Good food. Drinks too quite some time and it was not jammed inside. Recommend the Margerita Verde for the ladies.
Had a wonderful meal with friends. Great quality of fish nicely prepared.
The food is excellent and the they have a great selection of drinks/wine. The seafood tower was amazing! This was a great place to host out business dinner and I would highly recommend.
Great experience, delicious seafood.
Everything was great at this LA institution. Food and drink orders were very slow. Otherwise, they did a great job.
Mother’s Day dinner with my son was enjoyable with delicious King Crab and oysters! Despite being a busy night, the server worked really hard and was attentive.
Went for the soft shell crab and they ran out by 8 pm. Everything else was lovely though.
Good meal with old friends, a bit noisy but great service and vibe. Would go again.
Have eaten at Water Grill several times during visits to LA. Very fresh seafood/fish, excellent diverse menu options, something for every eating criteria, great ambiance, accommodating staff and service. A great place for special celebrations and 6+ people groups.
We had a 6:30pm reservation but didn't get seated until 6:50pm. However, the excellent food made up for the seating delay. I had the bass, it was beautifully done - simply seared and no heavy sauce to mask the flavor of the bass. My friend had the black cod which was also flaky and melts in your mouth.
We ordered steamed mussels and poke as appetizers, delicious! Def recommend this restaurant!
Had to wait 10 minutes to be seated, despite having a reservation. It does make a difference, especially when you have everything planned out as we were going to a show after. Our waiter was fantastic though, took time to explain certain things we had questions on. The fire alarm went off during meal, not ideal but these things happen. Food and drinks were great, as usual.
