Water Grill - Downtown Ratings and Reviews
Great find and the food was outstanding! We started with a crab cake and Tuna Poke to share - so fresh and WOW! The fish is awesome and the side dishes were great and interesting - we had the Crispy Polenta and the Kale! The Clam Chowder is well prepared and they have a unique twist with clams in the shell which I haven't seen before! This is restaurant is a keeper and hope to be back next time we are in LA!
Service was slow and we had a 5:45 reservation
Breads were phenomenal and best part of meal.
One of our sides came after some of us had finished our main course .octopuswas really good. My Mexican sea bass was tasty but dry.
Just not the quality it once was as the finest seafood restaurant in the city
The Water Grill Downtown was perfect for our family birthday celebration (8 people celebrating 4 birthdays!) We covered three generations and everyone was delighted with their food. The seafood is the best I have ever eaten - fresh, flavorful and perfectly prepared. The service was outstanding! Shrimp cocktail perfect - chilled, firm, generously sized shrimp. Sushi - fresh and beautifully presented. Chilean seabass firm, flaky, outstanding preparation served with delicious gnocchi. Lobsters terrific! Clam chowder delicious. Wedge salad huge and perfectly delicious. Everything Outstanding! Thanks.
The sea bass and filet mignon were average. The Mac n cheese was bad. The drinks were skimpy. We arrived on time for our reservation, but waited 15 minutes for our table. By the time our appetizer arrived it was over an hour after our reservation. The service was slow. I was underwhelmed.
The food was, as always, of high quality and intelligently prepared. We have always enjoyed the seafood platter, and this time was no exception, although I'd have loved the Dungeness Crab that used to be on it. I'm a bit of french fry snob, and the fries were first-rate. Extra points for providing malt vinegar. The service was attentive and professional, without being cloying. My only real complaint is that the space is very noisy, which I believe was intended and deliberately created by the internal space's architecture and decor. A lot of people like noisy dining environments. I don't. But I'll put up with that, for one of the seafood platters!
We were four in the party and we had a 5:30 PM reservation. We found the food to be very good. The food was prepared as it should have been. We ate early so that we could go to the symphony. The only complaint I have is that the kitchen was very slow. Given that we ate early, there was no large crowd to slow them down. They were just slow. Our server was attentive without being intrusive, which we like.
It has been several years since I last dined at the Water Grill and the meal we had was a pleasant surprise. Altogether, I thought the dinner we had (fresh oysters, crab cake, grilled octopus and sand dabs) was very well prepared and presented and, though the restaurant remains pricey, it is definitely not overpriced for the food, ambiance and service provided. The oyster sampler was, to our taste, a perfect sampling and the sand dabs--a personal favorite of mine-- were as good as I've ever had. Now that I've retired we don't dine frequently downtown, but the Water Grill is back at the top of my list for central business district dining.
Food was delicious. We have eaten here before, and our previous experience was great. This time it happened to be during dineLA, and we actually felt like the waiter treated us differently because of that. Didn't read us specials, had to ask for refills, and to remove empty plates.
For the price we paid to eat, we would've expected better service. Like I said, amazing prior experiences, but the service level definitely fell off this time.
Excellent bread! Great choices for seafood. French fries are also great. Service was outstanding. They also bring a dessert for birthday celebrations. Don't make a mistake and enter the garage from Olive Street. You have to go around the corner to grand to enter otherwise you will be in the bowels of the building. It is very confusing.
Greatly disappointed the last time we were there for a friends’ get together. It’s not the same dining experience I remembered from the past several times I was there. The place was noisy, packed and the table setting were closed together. Food were prepared as run of the mill dishes. It’s nothing special anymore.
The fish/seafood was cooked to the Water Grill standard and was fresh but their signature clam chowder which usually is absolutely delicious was unacceptable this time as it was watery and thin. It was like drink and not a chowder. Our group found their squash soup tasted a bit medicinal and bland. Disappointing as we all came for the chowder. Seemed like they did not have time to make it right.
Given ratings we noted from reviews the food was very disappointing. Two of us ordered the grilled pork chops. Both were dry, over cooked and pretty blah. One ordered to Chicken Milanese that came out tough with no accompaniments at all- just a plain piece of dry, breaded, pounded chicken breast. Would not recommend this restaurant.
