We had high expectations based on the reviews the restaurant received. We frequent downtown LA and usually stay right up the street at the Biltmore and since we love seafood, we figured we'd give the Water Grill a shot. Unfortunately, the food was very expensive and only average at best. The oysters were OK, but the beet salad and whole fish were very disappointing. The server and manager were very nice and replaced the beet salad with the mixed greens salad, which was better, but the dressing was over powered by the oil and was unimpressive. The Pink Brean whole fish ended up being over $50 (entree only) and was very disappointing; maybe I should have gone with the mahi or swordfish.
Decent food, a little pricey, somewhat limited selections, one of the oysters was bad but we understand things like that happen with shellfish.
Excellent downtown seafood spot with great seafood from around the globe. The oyster and fresh seafood selection are top tier. Great service and exceptional dinner experience.
Ordered beet salad and scallops. Neither were exceptional. Just average. Not sure what makes this place so popular.
First of all, the host was very unwelcoming and had an attitude! There were three of us and the reservations were made over 2 weeks in advance. The location where we sat was horrible. The people kept trying to take short cuts to their table and I was so upset that I had to move my chair the entire time we had dinner.
The service and food had gone way down from last year.
It was also very noisy. All you heard was the basketball game on all of the tv in the restaurant and people had to speak louder than usual so they could hear each other!
Service was slow and sub-par
The overall quality of the food was very disappointing compared to the high prices we had to pay. We don't mind paying DTLA prices for excellent food, but our dishes were stale, watery, too small and tasteless.
Of all my visits, Was disappointed in the level of service and professionalism this seating. Food was great as is every visit.
Did not realize water grill has a cap on alcohol consumption (5 drinks over 3 1/2 hrs). If that is the case my wife and I wouldn’t have spent $200 on driver to drive us to water grill for the evening.
Will take this into consideration in future visits.
If you like quality seafood then you will love this place. The location being a couple minutes walk from the Biltmore made it extremely convenient as well.
EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE FROM THE MOMENT I WALKED IN TO THE END OF OUR 3 HOUR DINNER (CATCHING UP WITH A FRIEND), THE SOMM, JULIAN, AND OUR FEMALE SERVER WERE ABSOLUTELY AMAZING, ATTENTIVE, FRIENDLY, HELPFUL, PATIENT, AND OVERALL WONDERFUL. SEAFOOD WAS SO FRESH, FROM OYSTERS TO SHRIMP WITH HEAD-ON & GRITS, TO SEAFOOD FRITTERS AND WARM LOBSTER ROLL. HOWEVER, the lobster was overcooked (rubbery) and small chunks in a buttery toasted hot dog bun, I've had better lobster rolls elsewhere.
I have gone to water grill several times. And was never disappointed. But this Monday, I was so embarrassed. I brought my friend from HK there (thinking this place never steer me wrong) and the iced shellfish platter wasn't fresh. I am so shocked. None of them have the sweetness of fresh seafood. Even the cooked fish was dried. They overcooked the black cod which is one of my favorite dish there.... :( sigh...
My experiences here are generally 5 Star. I think they were having an off day
So delicious ! Lovely atmosphere, superior service .
The oysters were fresh and deliciously briny. The octopus small plate was overwhelmed, however, by the pungency of the tomato based Spanish sauce that layered the bottom of the plate.
I’m not sure why this Restraunt can’t get a cocktail to your table in a reasonable amount of time! A nice assortment of fresh fish.
The new sommelier was fantastic, knowledgeable , professional, and enhanced our dining experience.
First time. Went for my birthday. Food was good. Will go again.
The Water Grill was plus/minus for me. It has the comfortable clubby feel of an East Coast seafood or steak restaurant. That's a plus, as was my server who was very friendly. Unfortunately, she's either not very good at her job or she was just having a bad night. It took 25 minutes before my cocktail arrived. In fact, my salad came before my drink. I asked her to hold the salad. My drink arrived, and a few minutes later, my entree. No salad. I asked her to bring me my salad and then bring the entree. The salad was delicious but enormous. Enough for a family of four. It's got to be the best bargain in LA, but a waste of food. The halibut entree was a normal portion size and beautifully prepared.
Friends reunion dinner!
The food was great and our waiter was super fun and introduced to us a yummy dessert!
Birthday. My wife an I started coming to the Watergril maybe 30 years ago. While it’s been renovated the ambience, food, service was excellent as before. Tyler our waiter was a standout and 5 stars!
Just terrible service on Easter and the place was empty!!!
My Dover sole while very expensive was way over done
We waited for 45 minutes for our salads to arrive along with an order of Oysters Rockefeller that was cold!!!!
Have been three time before .. will not return
a pleasant dining experience overall. Food very well prepared and nicely presented. Delicious Dover Sole. Atmosphere is understated and one can hear oneself talking!
On Easter Sunday, the kitchen was slow and the servers appeared a bit stretched.
The food was ok. I was expecting so much more based off the reviews. What we paid didn’t match the quality. The service was good. I don’t expect a return visit.
I always try to dine at the Water Grill when I come to downtown L.A. on business. The fresh fish is a treat, and this time my companion and I enjoyed a whole fish priced by the pound (pink bream from New Zealand). At $31/pound and 1.7 pounds it came out to less than $30 per person for a generous entrée of fabulous fresh fish. For wine we lucked into a 2010 Savennières, a white wine from the Loire Valley. Finding a white with that much bottle age is unusual (and not always desirable), but this wine is much better aged than young. I thought it was a Sauvignon Blanc but it was a Chenin Blanc (makes complete sense and the nose should have clued me in). The wine steward apparently did not know what the grape was, so I wasn't too impressed by that.
Love the restaurant! My second time but first time was for work and second with my husband for our anniversary. The waitor was nice and had good customer service experience
The experience was top notch from start to finish. Excellent food highly recommend!
My husband & I went for an early dinner after attending a concert at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. In a nutshell: comfortable, beautiful, excellent service, fresh, perfectly prepared seafood of all kinds, very good cocktails, amazing bread. It is open for early seating, which is a bonus when dining after an afternoon concert. A classic!
The service was terrible. The restaurant seems to have fallen off.
I probably wouldn’t eat here again. Service was extremely slow. It seems like server didn’t have the normal awareness. Had to ask for EVERYTHING. Food was ok. Also had a birthday celebration which was indicated on open table and we told the server. Every table around us was given a dessert so a little embarrassed with our guest.
Good seafood and raw bar. Overall very loud and crowded on weekend. Service was very good at start, but suffered as restraurant got more crowded.
Always a hit. I’ve been here more than a dozen times and always have a great experience. Sometimes it takes a little long for the food to arrive. If you let them know that you’re in a hurry, they will bring it out faster.
Our server was charming and terrific. I don't recall her name, but she was great.
The food was fantastic, from the Mexican Brown shrimp, to Diver Sole and Alaskan King Crab, but be prepared to WAIT ! Don’t know if it a wait staff shortage or what, but from the time we sat down at our table placed a drink order and hit our drinks, it was a good 30+ minutes. The same on placing and receiving our food order. But, the food was outstanding, the venue is terrific just be prepared to Wait and wait and wait !
Steak was over cooked and over priced for its quality
Chris was an excellent server. Knowledgeable about all menu items. Made excellent recommendations for wine, apps, entrees, and desserts! Favorites - poke app, Chilean Sea Bass, and bread pudding with caramel sea salt!
Profession service and good recommendation on the meal selection.
Ate there many times years ago when I worked downtown. Had a 8:15 reservation on a Saturday night. Was not seated until 9:15. Offered no complimentary anything for the wait. Place is very noisy. Even sitting next to my girlfriend we had to yell at each other. Food was ok - but certainly not worth the price. Kind of bland and uninspired. Will not be going there again any time soon.
Wish I hadn’t gone to Water Grill. Overrated, over priced trendy spot. Ordered the $47 sea bass with squash gnocchi which the server recommended. Fish was good and the gnocchi which surrounded it was cold and unappetizing. The pairing ruined the meal. Server was too busy and really slow. Place has tables on top of each other. Portions are small. Not a good meal and not relaxing or enjoyable at all. Many better choices.
