Water Grill - Downtown Ratings and Reviews
After 30 years, the Water Grill has never let me down--always great food--always great urban ambience. It is a good spot for a private discussion over a fine meal (I have recruited a few prospective USC faculty there) or for a small group of friends. The photo is a group of USC faculty who wanted to the seize the chance for a meal together at the end of the semester before heading various directions for the holidays. We would normally get together at the Jonathan Club, but the Club had a special event and we seized the chance to vary our routine. I am glad we did. I had the 20 shrimp, washed down with plenty of Woodford Reserve bourbon. It was a great evening.
Always a great place for a meal before a show at the Music Center. A busy weekend before Christmas, but had our table waiting for us. We shared a salad. My wife had the sea bass which was melt in your mouth good. I had the dover sole special which was outstanding. Great job. Thanks.
I have eaten at this restaurant on many occasions. This particular occasion the service was sub-par. We were seated and served drinks, and the waiter was very upbeat and friendly. However, after our order was taken, no one checked back with us to see if we needed additional drinks (which we did). I kept trying to get someone's (anyone's) attention and actually had to raise my voice to get someone to come to our table and take another drink order (it had been at least 30 minutes). We ordered a cold seafood tower as an appetizer and it took probably 45 minutes for that to be served. We had not even finished our appetizer when our entrees came out. The service was disorganized and unprofessional, and the waiter kept telling us it was because the kitchen was not getting the food out in a timely fashion. He did not seem to understand that the primary issue was with his inattention as opposed to the time it was taking to get our food. We would have been happy if our drinks had just been filled. Very disappointing.
Excellent seafood restaurant. The dishes were uniformly delicious, and service was excellent. Craft beer is available in pitchers which is great for groups. Not vegan/vegetarian friendly, they are reduced to eating salads or side dishes. Ambiance was classy and nice without being stuffy. Fairly pricy but a great restaurant for special occasions.
One of my favorite places and I'm even allergic to fish. Top notch service with everyone stepping up to unobtrusively get us what we needed. My mac and cheese was creamy and yummy. The wedge salad was huge, fresh crisp and I couldn't finish. My guest thoroughly enjoyed the clam chowder with whole clams (shell and all) and a fish dish.
Waiter was weird. It was six of us dining, couple were late she got us drinks appetizers and she disappeared. She came back took drink orders for the couple that were late and she disappeared. I asked another waiter to call the lady that was serving us and her young gentleman came and said that he’s going to take care of us from now on. He took our order and our waiter reappeared.
This is a great spot if you want a quiet, business lunch. It is a high-end, high quality restaurant. The food was amazing, hot, fresh and delicious. I did not pay the bill but I believe it was substantial. It's a great place to impress a potential customer or client.
Service was ok, it was quite busy. We were not dressed up and I thought perhaps that’s why our server was not very attentive to us. The sea bass was very delicious and cooked to perfection but the steak (12oz filet) was not great. Bland and on the chewy side. The Mac and cheese was not bad, nothing special. We also had the broccolini which was also ok but the sausage that was in it was quite dry. Overall from other reviews I was disappointed
I invited a dear friend from Washington State here for dinner. We arrived at 5:00 in order to avoid the crowd.
We were "invisible" for a half an hour, sitting in a very noisey, 'kitchen-close' table (booth)' which we told, "ill be special for you", and then we waited and waited ..... apparently not visible to any of the staff.
Finally, someone came by so we could order cocktails.
Then, when it seemed like months later, we could order. When the orders came, both of us were in shock.
I have been coming here for years, and always brought dear friends from all across the country.
This was "the worst", and, my friend who is a gourmet chef, was appalled!
I was horrible embarrassed.
Thankfully, Water Grille comped the menu, which they certainly should have: given the horrible service, and the quality of the food.
I can't say that I will never come here again - I've been coming for years and years -
However, IF I come again, I will be determined to "Be treated with the courtesy, and dignity that I deserve. I am, Dr. Griffen.
My wife and were celebrating our 35 wedding anniversary, which I noted on the reservation. We were greeted with a "happy anniversary", but were not offered any complimentary desert. We split "The Grand" iced shellfish platter plus 1 sea urchin. We brought our own bottle of wine. It was nice that they did not charge a corking fee. The seafood was fresh and tasty. I was dissapointed with the size of the "jumbo" shrimp, they seemed about average size, and the half 1.25lb lobster, which was just half a tail, no claw, also seemed rather small. Pictures I've seen of the whole lobster show a larger tail and claws. The Urchin was good, sweet and creamy. The dipping sauce was terrible; smokey and totally ruined the taste of the Urchin. The waiter said this is the sauce they have served for 20 years. So, I rated the food 3-stars, about average. The price was about right for what we received. Service was excellent and the ambiance was very clean and up scale.
