Water Grill - Downtown
The chicken menu for the dine in LA was very disappointing as it didn’t smell and taste right. And the dessert that we got as part of the course menu was also so so. The peanut butter sorbet/ice cream was not good at all.
I wished that the restaurant kept the same quality of their usual good food for the dine in LA weeks. I might avoid going there during any special dining events if the restaurant sacrifices the quality over the price. I am pretty sure that’s not what most of their customers want or expect.
A landmark for seafood and ambience in downtown LA 👏🏾👏🏾
Great dining experience. Server was personable and fun. Food excellent. Enjoyable evening.
Awesome as usual. We keep coming back to this place for the ambiance and the always unsurpassed service.
We were late for our reservation b/c of the elements, however, the Water Grill staff were very gracious in promptly seating us. The DineLA menu was scrumptious! It was a first for five members of our party of six. Wonderful & rich ambiance, waitstaff were exceptional and very accommodating to our requests, thumbs way up for the Wild Pacific Swordfish and the Wild Mahi Mahi Caponata!! We will definitely lunch another day!!
Water Grill is always solid for fresh seafood. I went there for dinela and supplemented by adding uni, scallops and oysters from the raw bar. Everything was as delicious and fresh as always. However this time I had the pleasure of dining at Rowan’s table and the combination of her professional service, casual and easy personality combined with her knowledge of the menu warranted a review. I’m a firm believer that good service is as important as the quality of the food. The food here is always a slam dunk... I’ve even had their chicken (yes i know, at a seafood restaurant) and that too was amazing!!!!! Thank you for the excellent meal!!!!!
Great seafood menu. Loved the whole fish options. Oyster selection is great and the service was amazing. It's more casual than fancy and a large space. We had great cocktails too.
My husband and I went to the Water Grill a year ago and had the best service and food. We had been wanting to bring our best friends so they can experience the great food (especially the raw bar). We went this past Sunday prior to the Laker game and I have to say I was a bit disappointed. Our server, however very sweet, was under immense pressure because there were no bussers and short handed on servers as well. she was so rushed, and very short with us, it made it a bit uncomfortable. We sat for 1/2 hour with no wine in our glasses, and no sign of our server. We finally had to tell her, because we had sat for so long without our order being taken, that we were needing our service sped up because we were now running late. We were 1/2 hour late getting to the Lakers game. Hopefully next time, we will encounter better service, especially for the price of dinner.
I've been coming to Water Grill for years and have never been disappointed. My wife and I shared the poke appetizer. I had the sea bass and my wife had the sole. Both were excellent, and the service was also excellent. I definitely recommend this restaurant.
Service was fairly slow from the kitchen. We waited almost an hour for our appetizers. Overall a very good restaurant - but a little dissapointed in the wait time for food.
Great location. Good food.
Always a pleasure to sit and eat the downtown LA’s best seafood offerings! No exception this night- the Ciopino and swordfish entrees, the grilled octopus, scallop and salmon Crudo’s, local Pilsner and attentive service all first-rate. We will be back!.
Great food and great service.
The sea bass was okay. I was very disappointed with the service. I ordered the sea bass and had the intention of ordering dessert at the end of my meal and leaving the remainder of my per diem as tip (more than 20%). However, it took ten minutes for someone to come by and offer me a drink. Once I had the sea bass, no one checked to see if I was enjoying my entree. Once I had finished eating, no one came by for nearly fifteen minutes (by now, I was too fed up to stay for dessert so I walked down the street to Bottega Louie).
Wonderful food and service!
The atmosphere was much better than I expected and we really enjoyed the evening
I took my elderly parents for dinner. We enjoyed everything we ordered. Our server was friendly and very patient as my parents took a bit of time deciding. She was attentive without ever making us feel rushed. The atmosphere was perfect (might have been too loud for my parents later in the evening as the restaurant became full). It’s a lovely setting and would definitely go back.
Food and service are always top notch. No corkage fees! Great fresh bread.
Service enthusiastic and professional. Food as always good. Shellfish Tower always a pleasure. Main courses less-inspired.
Slow bartender but nice food
First, our reservation got lost after we were checked in so we had to wait an additional 20 minutes when we arrived 10 minutes before our reservation.
I got the shrimp and grits and it was extremely subpar. We had 4 diners and 2 liked their dinners. I was very regrettable that I didn’t just get the shrimp Louie as another person at our table got it and her shrimp were so much better than my small portions. Another diner got a filet and she thought it was over cooked and under seasoned. One diners’s tuna was enjoyed. We were visiting from out of state and wouldn’t return if back in town.
Wonderful dinner and made for a perfect anniversary dinner.
Excellent food, great service, our waiter Coranado was terrific!
Very good food and service. Loud atmosphere. Waitress was efficient and nice, but rushed and robot like which took away from what was expected a relaxed evening with a good meal and drink.
The Water Grill never disappoints. Fresh seafood, great service and a warm ambiance make it a favorite dtla spot for us.
My girlfriends birthday. The staff was great the entire night. Food was excellent and drinks were strong. Be back soon.
Lovely food and great service. Good location in Downtown LA, near our hotel.
very delicious！like Chillean Seabass the most!
We were living downtown when Water Grill first open. We moved several times since but we're glad to see that twenty years later it is the same great restaurant. Great food (sea food & other things), great service, ambiance and bar scene. Too last this long and this well is a miracle in the restaurant business and it speaks volumes for this establishment. Thank you Water Grill.
The seafood options are endless. The fish is artfully plated and the quality is superior. The portion size is perfect. The endive salad and Brussels sprouts sides were plentiful and delicious. Valet parking is reasonable with a three hour window to enjoy the downtown ambiance.
We always love our meals at the Downtown Los Angeles location as well as the Santa Monica location. My cioppino was wonderful and much more than I could finish in one sitting. Sara's shrimp pasta dish was very good as well. I had to take home more than a third of my meal. The only downside of this visit was our souffle order for dessert. Apparently the oven was down and they could not prepare souffles. They offered us a comp'd alternate dessert, but by then we decided it was sign for us to skip a dessert. We love this location because we love the old Pacific Mutual building it is in as well.
We had an early dinner here after a matinee at the theater. It has a wonderful ambiance and we had wonderful service. Rowan, who was our server, really made our meal. She was so friendly and welcoming. She knew the menu well and offered good advice. Our daughter said the fresh uni was delicious. My poinsettia cocktail was wonderful and so festive. The bread pudding dessert was outstanding!
Birthday Celebration - they acknowledged that at check in and warmly greeted the birthday girl. Also brought a complementary dessert. Waiter was super nice and helpful.
The service was functional buy cold and perfunctory. Entrees came with no side dishes and were unattractively presented.
Not what it used to be Kumamoto oysters so bad I ordered a dozen and some of us end up spitting them out filet very dry and chocolate soufflé took 40 min!!!
loved it will be back soon excellent location for a date
Awesome food as usual. Been here many times never disappointed!
Always great seafood!
It is not what it has been. The seafood platter we ordered to start was good, although the shrimp were a bit watery. The main disappointment were the main dishes. Mediocre at best. The ciopino was watery, over-spiced, with too much anise and Pernod. The shrimp with grits dish wasn't much better. The shrimp were mushy and the seasoning heavy handed. Someone isn't paying attention in the kitchen and is letting these dishes come out this way. I used to really enjoy our meals there, but I can't say I will be rushing back there any time soon. Too bad.
Had a great time there. The food was decent but what really stood out was the service. It was excellent. Our server was wonderful and we had the manager come over and say hello too. The only thing I thought was a bit tacky was the table tent cards about gift cards. It made it feel like a diner like Denny’s.
