Always great seafood!
It is not what it has been. The seafood platter we ordered to start was good, although the shrimp were a bit watery. The main disappointment were the main dishes. Mediocre at best. The ciopino was watery, over-spiced, with too much anise and Pernod. The shrimp with grits dish wasn't much better. The shrimp were mushy and the seasoning heavy handed. Someone isn't paying attention in the kitchen and is letting these dishes come out this way. I used to really enjoy our meals there, but I can't say I will be rushing back there any time soon. Too bad.
Had a great time there. The food was decent but what really stood out was the service. It was excellent. Our server was wonderful and we had the manager come over and say hello too. The only thing I thought was a bit tacky was the table tent cards about gift cards. It made it feel like a diner like Denny’s.
Great seafood. Would not recommend the house made pastas.
The service was so bad
I don’t want to co again!
Always love to come here when I’m visiting DTLA. Great seafood and staff.
My wife and I had a light dinner at the Water Grill before seeing the play “Valley of the Heart” at the Mark Taper Forum on Sunday 12/2/2018. They have Exceptional service and Great food. It had been a decade since our last visit. The new décor is beautiful. We ordered the sample plate of six pairs of raw oysters (east & west coast), with 2 different very tasty dinner rolls, and a bottle of sauvignon blanc (mmmm). It was a truly great evening.
Great service, delicious oysters Rockefeller, and enjoyed our booth. Entrees also were great. Thank you.
Lovely quiet venue for Saturday brunch/lunch before walking up to the Music Center for a show. Kid- friendly menu choices as well as fine seafood.
It turned out that Water Grill, which I had always thought of as a pricey place, was an excellent value compared to the “Sugar Plum Fairy Brunch” being offered to Nutcracker Ballet ticket holders that day.
We've always loved and enjoyed Water Grill downtown. We've always had best service and this visit was no exception. This visit however, I noticed how good the coffee was. Probably the best coffee I have ever had. We have introduced many friends and family to this place and we will continue to come back and bring new people.
Recommendation depends on when and why. Ours was a work-related dinner and the noise level made conversation nearly impossible.
The salad with anchovies and chorizo and clams made an excellent pairing. Great bar—try their take on the Margarita and Bloody Mary.
Best seafood in Los Angeles! Great service, fresh seafood, food prepared to perfection.
Service wait efficient, professional which provide a great dining experience for my boyfriend and me. Food was fresh and delicious.
Everything about our dining experience was perfect!
Business lunch that was successful. I think the food was well received overall. For what my stone crabs cost I was a bit disappointed by the portion size. Also the avocados that accompanied my heirloom tomatoes where a bit hard to chew. It’s the first time I’ve commented on the food being other than fantastic so I thought I’d mention it.
Amazing food, unfortunately seated directly next to a server computer station and the kitchen entrance, so there was constant commotion surrounding our table.
I have frequented various Waster Grill locations. This is the best by far. My steak was done to perfection. Bravo!
Amazing food, wine and presentation. Service was friendly, a bit rushed. Most upscale fine dinning servers watch the quests to see if thy are ready for their main courses, this place just brings them. Server asked us about appetizers, and main entree’s in same stop. Food came out in 10 min. No tome to talk over a drink. We felt rushed the whole time. However, maybe thats gow hey do it there. Overall food and service was great!
Wonderful place to have some great seafood. The waitstaff and the chef were very accommodating and creative about modifying a menu item to meet my particular food quirks. This was our fourth visit and Water Grill is 4 for 4 in our book. Keep up the great food and service!
Very over priced and extremely small portions . Waiter was irritating. Won’t go back.
Steamed clams - delicious, excellent flavor. Crab cake - excellent.
Entree - sea bass was cooked perfectly. Flavor was excellent. Service was outstanding.
Always a favorite when in Downtown Los Angeles. We usually dine here after a matinee at the Ahmanson Theater.
We had a Birthday Party Luncheon for our co-worker at the Water Grill. The deserts and salads were great. The Chilean sea bass was amazing and a nice large portion. The halibut was okay, just a much smaller piece of fish and over cooked while the white beans were very al dente. My co-worker liked them. Shrimp and grits were more like cream of wheat, than grits or even polenta based on the expert who ordered them.
They did try hard to please our group that is why I gave the review 4 stars, otherwise I would have given 3 overall.
They put up with my kid running around but the food was pretty bad. My husband’s halibut was over cooked, we both had a tummy ache the next day and my daughter’s fries were Little Rock’s. I enjoyed the ambience and my sea bass but the value was not there for over cooked food. If $50 is being spent on a piece of fish, I want it to melt in my mouth. If fries are $7, they should be edible.
Disappointed with the food. Ordered the Chilean Sea Bass and it was too salty. I can literally see salt on top of the dish! Complained about it and the waiter said they’ll bring a new one. It took forever, everyone in our party was done with their food. Finally called the waiter and just told them to cancel my order.
Will not go back to this restaurant.
Everyone there was great. Food was good not great.
Very good. Great service and properly prepared seafood. Halibut and Mahi Mahi were very good.
The service was terrible. It took over ten minutes to get drinks and then I had to flag someone down. Then it took another ten minutes to get the drinks. The food was all cold including the crab cake appetizer. The soup came out after the entrees. It was cold. I hate cold soup and my fish was cold as well. I was there for a special occasion and they brought two free deserts because I think they realized we were so poorly taken care of the waiter felt bad. Then it took forever to get the check. I did not complain because it was my daughter's birthday and I didn't want to ruin her night. I even sent the manager an email and he ignored my email and never responded. It was really bad.
extremely noisy. at one point a party of 12 was seated near us. they were so loud I actually shouted to our waitress to tell them to keep it down. that caused quite a scene. a few male members of that party visited me at my table and let me know their opinion of what I did. then, the restaurant manager came over to apologize explaining they were celebrating 3 birthdays. well, that's fine, but take it to party place. the Water Grill is extremely expensive and I don't want to pay those prices for a noisy, seemingly cheap restaurant experience. even though the manager gave me his card and told me to call him the next time for a better table, I will think twice before I go back.
Water Grill is consistently good. It is expensive, but a nice treat for a special evening.
This trip however was not as great as past visits. We felt rushed and our server failed to list the specials, give us her name or ask if we wanted something to drink. Our food was cold and two dishes we sent back because of temperature. Maybe a fluke as we have never has issues in the past.
Still we will go back as the food is terrific. One of the only places that does not overcook the fish.
Dinner was great. But not as outstanding as you would have thought based upon the price. Food was good but nothing to right home about. What made dinner special was our waitress, Rowan. She had a wonderful personality and was delightful to have as a server.
Nice place. Good food. Server was helpful but a little slow in attentiveness I.e refilling drinks, bread.
Great!! A top notch restaurant in every way
always a good choice for business lunch or a dinner before theatre. fish is always excellent; swordfish, salmon, sea bass and roasted halibut are all always well prepared. Service was slow this last time for 6 of us but I hope this is an anomaly.
Fish is always excellent and the wine list has some gems. That's why I go. The selection of fresh fish is usually a bit smaller than, say, Oceanaire or the Fish Market but perhaps they get only the freshest fish. I try to dine here on every trip to downtown L.A. (Raw bar seems impressive but it's not something I go for.)
Disappointed in the quality of the food this time around. I have been there before and have liked it. This time the bread served with the mussel appetizer was stale. The lobster entrée and the vegetable sides were cold when served. I expected more from the Water Grille. Service was initially attentive but then the waiter disappeared as we were trying to get to a performance . Not sure I will go back.
