Water Grill - Downtown Ratings and Reviews
I made a reservation for 11am for DineLA since I've never been there. We were running late and they were easy to accommodate our time due to the women's march. However, after sitting down and ordering our lunch we never saw our waitress again. She did not bother to check up on us or asked if we needed anything while we waited for our food. It took an hour, from the time we placed our order to getting our food on the table.... I was not happy. My boyfriend said we shouldn't even bother to tip their lack of services. But the Hispanic bust boy was very helpful with getting our plates, getting us more bread (because we were hungry from waiting), and utensils. If I'm spending $50 for lunch I expect the service level to be there! It ain't a Chinese restaurant where crappy services is expected (I should know, I been to my fair share, being chinese and all). I sadly have to say I would not go back.
Really enjoyed the Dine LA option. I had the Costa Rican Mahi Mahi. It was delicious, but I would have liked to have had more of the delicious sauce. Not quite enough. The clam chowder was excellent and the wait staff was very good as well. I also enjoyed the festive atomosphere.
We went for lunch on a weekend around 1:00. It was kind of too empty, but there were a lot
of servers. After a while this made for a slightly uncomfortable ambiance. If there are going to be that few people then maybe they shouldnt be open then? The mahi-mahi and the sable fish were great, the crab cake, good, but a little small and undercooked. The scrambled egg from the brunch menu was also a little disappointing, maybe I should try the salmon hash. I am also not a huge fan of the bread pudding.
We were in town for a bowl game and I made a reservation on Open Table. The restaurant called to confirm our reservation. I called the restaurant back and told them we would be there. A few minutes later I got a message from Open Table that the restaurant had canceled our reservation. I immediately called the restaurant back and the guy that answered the phone said somebody had mistakenly canceled the reservation but had resintated it. I'm not sure if I got credit from Open Table for the booking. I and another diner had the scallops, which were very good. The other diner had the salmon with some sort of beans on it, possibly cannellini beans. The dish was very bland, not much flavor. We had the seafood fritters, which were excellent. The bread they brought out before the meal was also very good. A bit pricey but very good overall. I would definitely recommend Water Grill if you're in the area.
We had eaten at the Water Grill a few years ago and enjoyed it very much. So when we knew we’d be in LA to see Hamilton and overnight at the Biltmore for our 50th wedding anniversary, we naturally booked a dinner reservation there. I had noted that this would be a special evening when I made reservations. Our table was in the back near the kitchen—not very romantic. Wait person obviously had no idea about our special event, nor did she ask. Food was not good. Ordered the shrimp Louie salad, which had few shrimp and lettuce in big awkward pieces and not much else. The scallops came in some kind of flavorless cauliflower sauce with pieces of browned cauliflower floating in it, which was not a good pairing. At no time did the wait person seem like she was concerned with us. We paid the bill and left. Very disappointing. Will not return there.
Service was great but food was kind of bland. Ordered the filet and it was moist and prepared as ask. It just didn’t have very much flavor. Also ordered the seafood stew (can’t remember the exact name) but needed to add tabasco sauce to the dish to add flavor. Oyster order was tasty and so were the drinks.
Perhaps it was just because it was the Saturday before New Years Eve...and the Rose Bowl... but everything just seemed to be a little "off" that night. We have season tickets to the Ahmanson and Water Grill is our "go to" place on those evenings. Our waiter that evening was Coronado, who was very friendly and efficient when we arrived, but the bussers were not up to WG's usual standard. We had to ask 3 times for bread. Each time we were told it was just coming out of the oven and would be there in a "minute"...NOT! Finally, ask the manager, got the same excuse, but finally the bread arrived. The manager did comp our salad, so thanks. I finished my meal before my guest did and I still had a piece of the "late arrival" bread in my hand when the busser came to remove my plate...including my bread plate. All just little stuff, but not up to WG's usual standard. We will be back. Hopefully, this was just a very busy holiday night and the Water Grill downtown will return to it's usual excellent food and service.
Waited about an hour for our food and it arrived cold. (Appetizer was also cold.) The waitress seemed to expect this when we asked her to heat it back up. When it came back it was warmer, but still nowhere near the quality that would justify the price per plate. Big disappointment. Don't order the miso cod. They put bonito (cheap, trendy fish flakes) as a garnish on top of... fish. Weird, not a good choice. There were barely any vegetables on the plates, either. For that price they could at least give you more food, vegetables if nothing else.
Solid go to restaurant for before the theater. Always good fish and the best oysters in LA. Once you get past the host station the service is always first rate. Best place to sit is by the Oyster Bar as the shucker always has an opinion on anything and everything. Great DTLA spot.
The service was on point with timing, refilling my water and attentiveness. The server was very nice and welcoming. The food was spaced out perfectly. The ambiance well dim but still well lit. The only thing I would say is to please keep an eye out on utensils. No one likes reusing their utensils, it takes away from the fine dining experience so please have your servers look out for any missing utensils their customer may need for the next meal. Thank you for providing excellent service and amazing food. Can't wait to eat there again! :)
