Fantastic seafood restaurant in A historic building. Great wine list. Excellent service.
Beautiful restaurant with outstanding service. The fried chicken is amazing.
Good quality seafood. Elegant atmosphere. Best bartender/server in Nicole at the bar.
She knows her drinks (beer in my case that night), her food and is a great conversationist. Very knowledgeable about the food and drinks on the menu.
There were gnats non stop hovering over my bread, wine, oysters and Chilean sea bass. Also, the colony of gnats were circling the bar area around the top of cocktail bottles. It was nauseating. I left with a bad taste in my mouth, and have had horrible bowel movement issues the last 24 hours. To top it off, I arrived to my 11:00am reservation on time. And I had to wait over 15 minutes to use the restroom. The male worker cleaning the women’s bathroom told me he needed a few seconds. My bladder wanted to explode. I’m completely Irate and horrified at this place. The server was lovely and great at her job. She was the only redeeming quality of this experience. Oh also, and the food was delicious.
I would appreciate a call from the General Manager offering an apology for this horrid experience. Please note my friend and I took videos of the colony of gnats circling over food. I don’t want to post this on yelp, and social media. So please contact me. Thank you kindly.

Sunday before a theater matinee was perfect-------
Amazing seafood! Great service and romantic. I would recommend.
It’s just an unforgettable dining experience, so good!
Outstanding in every way.
The food was great as usual, but it was not hot as if it sat on the counter for a bit. Our server tried, but I think she had too many tables for the busy hour. There were long gaps between, which is why I believe our plates sat idle. I have visited several times in the past including an annual business dinner for the holidays and this was not the best visit.
Fresh fish was well prepared and had great flavor. Noise level got louder as restaurant filled. Service was great
You cannot go wrong with the WaterGrill. All good.
The food and service continue to be great at the Water Grill. Reservations are honored on time. The seating is very comfortable. Ask for a booth if your party is not too big. The bar is full service and the wine list is great
Try the fish!. This is a fish house and while steaks may be good, the fish is great. The clam chowder is delicious!
My only warning is that the restaurant is noisy. We go there knowing this and know the food is worth it but I have to know that it is not the restaurant to go to with someone who is hard of hearing. All others ...ENJOY!
The salmon and swordfish were just okay. I expected a lot more. However the cod taco appetizer and polenta side dish were absolutely memorable.
Food was delicious!
Not your typical hip, trendy lounge style restaurant.
Came here for the first time for Father's Day and my family loved it! The medium seafood tower (says on menu that it feeds 3-4 people) & 2 entrees were perfect for 4 people. The bread pudding was so good! They had a Father's Day dessert that was so good: a thin pistachio cookie served with sorbet and strawberries. Would definitely come here again!
We ordered scallops and sea bass, and 25 minutes later they arrived, however, the scallops were cold, room temperature. We called that to the attention of the wait person who took them back to the kitchen promising to correct that problem. A few minutes later, the entrees came back and, incredibly, the scallops were still cold, the sea bass lukewarm. We told the wait person we wanted neither. While the restaurant "comped" the entire meal and wine [and we left a tip nevertheless] it is inexcusable for a restaurant of this quality to send out a cold meal and then take it back and it returned, likely put in the microwave for a minute to warm the plate, as cold as before. Too bad, beautiful restaurant and we will never return.
Great time as usual, love this place!
Poor service and expensive.
I took my wife out for her birthday. She had a sea bass dish and I had the lobster roll. The sea bass dish was delicious but the lobster roll left much to desire. The lobster was bland and the texture was very rubbery, no way was it worth 30$. I have had more delicious lobster rolls from a food truck. We notified our waitor and he thought it was "weird" and didn't offer anything to make up for dissapointing meal. We won't be back.
The lobster we ordered had a tail literally the size of a large shrimp....Food was otherwise ok.
It took them and hour to bring a seafood tower to our table, other than that everything was good.
Have been hear several times this was the worst service ever! Sommelier was great but waitress was awful! It was a $400 dinner with a waitress that should work at Olive Garden!
Although the oysters are great I won’t be back!
Great everything, especially the service. We had a wonderful meal and experience.
Fantastic downtown location for a business dinner. The service was great from arriving to leaving and the food was fantastic. I would definitely book here again.
Great Fish.. ..not cheap...fresh fish never is...
haven't been there in a while....still a great
Noisy noisy noisy—table conversation was very difficult.
Our server (Rowan) was truly outstanding and the ambiance of the restaurant lovely.. but even with a reservation, we had to wait ~20 minutes to be seated. The food was very good... but could be improved. My co-workers really enjoyed their halibut with a citrus cream sauce. My black cod was perfectly cooked... but just needed some more flavor with a marinade or sauce. The mac & cheese was fine... but again needed something more... a sharper cheese, perhaps. And the dessert (bread pudding), which was said to be excellent was actually rather heavy and dense. Also the bread for the table was also simply not fresh.
Birthday I love. The food
I like the vibe in this restaurant but the prices are ridiculous. That said the place was packed. I know Water Grill has some of the freshest fish that comes into L.A. and I do think it's very good. However, $50 for a piece of fish with no sides is ridiculous. I stopped going to the Santa Monica Water Grill because I just was tired of paying their high prices. I went to an event in DTLA and thought why not? Well that's the last time I will ever go there again unless someone is on an expense account and treating and even then it's not that special.
The food is very good. Appetizers, entrees (they have a great seafood selection) and desserts. My family enjoys Cioppino, so we had 3 orders! One nice thing is that the food is served at a nice pace, no rush as one goes through each course.
I ordered soft shell crab. It was the worst ever.
Excellent meal and courteous service.
Very loud. Service was very slow and not even close to the level of former 1-star standard.
The Water Grill is the best seafood place in DTLA. The drinks are a little too expensive for what they are and the service this time was very slow. Still, the bread is good and the seafood is fresh and generally well prepared. The one thing that is always outstanding is the oyster selection.
Great good! Always consistent.
Love the food. Especially the tuna poke and bread pudding. Service was really slow Sunday and the restaurant was not busy. A little disappointing. Could be just a one time thing because other times the service has been great.
It was amazing
I love this place, but service was very slow this time. Drinks came out slow and so did the food. It could have been an off night because usually it is not like this.
