American
Built in 1840, this former Cape May plantation residence is now home to the acclaimed Washington Inn and Wine Bar. The Craig Family has carefully preserved the beauty & essence of this distinctive treasure without undertaking major alterations to its original form. The Inns welcoming facade overlooks tree-lined Washington Street in the seaside communitys Historic District. The Washington Inn offers six unique dining areas, from a summer patio to cozy fireside tables. Cocktails are a must in the Wine Bar, where the passing Cape May scene can be best appreciated. Often described as romantic, our easy-going elegance will satisfy anyones craving for fine dining. Our enticing menu offers the best of American cuisine, but with an inventive, upscale edge. Food, Service, Ambiance, the essential ingredients for dining excellence, are all deftly blended here at The Washington Inn. We are what "eating out" used to be.

Sean was our excellent waiter. He directed my wife to the most delicious halibut special. Had an excellent martini but the beach plum specialty drink was also amazing. A wonderful dinner experience as always. Highlight of a great Cape May vacation.

So, I am enjoying my salad when I bite into something hard. I thought I cracked a tooth. It turns out a piece of plastic found its way into my salad. I placed it in a dish and showed it to the waitress. She called over the manager. Very apologetic. Several times :I'm sorry" "I'm sorry"

While I do appreciate them being sorry I think the proper response would have been to also offer a dessert on the house. Something to compensate the bad experience.
We ordered a $120 wine. The waitress opened the bottle and did the first pour and then it was up to me to pour the rest of the bottle. And for that I should tip 20% on the wine too? Ordered the African tail lobster dinner with the extra crab stuffing. It was very good . My wife ordered the fillet minion. Asked for Medium + got Well Done.

However, even though this review may seem negative I am still of the belief that when it comes to Cape May dinning The Washington Inn has no equal

Waiter was nice as could be, but our table was uncomfortable, tiny and in the corner. I had made the reservation a long time before. It was a shame as the guests we brought drove far to dine with us as I told them this was my favorite restaurant.

This is the first time in several years we have dined at the Washington Inn, because we usually go to BYOB restaurants. From the greeting at the desk until our desert, the staff interaction was very pleasant. Our server, Gabriella was very pleasant and helpful, answering our questions fully. From our appetizer to our deserts, the presentation and preparation were exceptional - what we expected from the Washington Inn. All in all, the evening was a total success.

Very very good quality food at a higher price than most places down there. This is a nicer dining experience so as long as you go in knowing that - you are good to go. Awesome service food and ambiance.

My husband and I made reservations here to celebrate our anniversary. We were pretty disappointed. The oysters were perfectly shucked, but that's as far as it goes. Our food was subpar for what we paid. Sand in my scallops, corn in the crab cakes and a hair on my husband's plate made for a sad dinner. The creme brulee was disappointing. And there was a very obnoxious individual two tables over.

We are local and bring guest to the Washington Inn quite often. This past week we had guest in from the UK and thought they would love the ambience, food and overall history of the Washington Inn. Waiter was nice but did not give us prices of the Lobster Tail that was on special but we didn’t ask either so shame on us! Two of us ordered the lobster tails and when we got our bill they were $95 each! That is insane for lobster tail. It was delicious but I would never ever order any food that cost $95! Like I said shame on us for not asking and in all honesty the waiter should of told us the prices for the specials. My next problem was that our guest both ordered the oysters for appetizers. When the assistant waiter came to pick up there trays she dumped the tray of ice water and oyster juice all over my husband. Needless to say he was not happy and no one there really seemed to care they said it’s just ice water! It’s not just ice water when you have to pick oyster shells off your lap.
So all in all food was ok but over priced, my chocolate martini was excellent, guest enjoyed there wine but in all honesty don’t think we will be returning.

While the dining room is elegant and quiet, we had the misfortune to have the adjacent table become occupied by a quartet who had been trained in the art of conversation by John Madden. The staff was wonderful and moved us immediately to a quiet table. Many thanks to Gabrielle.
