Ate here with Azi: uni, very good; fois gras sushi, delicious; pickled veges, OK; fluke sashimi, good; fig and achi ice cream, good
Our third time here. Food is excellent and different. Fois gras sushi is amazing. Actually all of the dishes are amazing. Service is polite and attentive. It's not cheap but it's very special.
good asian food
some extraordinary snd different dishes
Truly delicious culinary experience. Even just a single appetiser from here proves that this is not another sushi spot.
We found Wasan East Village when staying in the city over President's Day weekend. The food was excellent. The fish was extremely fresh, and the plates were beautifully presented. It was a great meal and a wonderful time.
Really nice place. So quiet and comfortable. Tasty food. Great service.
We went for Valentine's Day and honestly, Wasan blew our minds. I can't wait to go there again.
Yummy! Service was awesome and people were friendly, would really appreciate more effort when it came to the ambiance of the restaurant because everything else meets the mark. Food was delicious!! The Fois Gras sushi, cod and wagyu beef bowl were amazing. Special shout out to the fig and mascarpone ice cream. So fresh and definitely my favorite. :)
One of the best Japanese restaurants in the city. The food has such a 'home-cooked' taste, much like "Okaasan no Aji" that I crave. There is a nice variety and the menu regularly changes. Service is very friendly and if you like beer or sake, the selection is perfect.
If I'm in the East Village, I'm likely to have dinner here. Authentic Japanese but not a sushi restaurant (though there is sushi on the menu). Delicious, friendly, relaxed and open late. I think the full menu is until 11 pm and then the late night menu is until 2 am!
Inventive Japanese food served in a low-key atmosphere. Excellent sake.
Great food. Great Sake. Great service. Had a wonderful time.
Tasting menu was excellent and well worth the price. Service was good during the meal but a bit slow at the end when we were trying to get our check to leave. Good selection of Japanese beer and nice warm and casual while still being upscale atmosphere.
Wonderful 6th anniversary special course. This is very authentic Japanese cuisine.
This used be to a really great hidden gem for non traditional Japanese food. I'm afraid to say it's no longer the same. I don't know what happened in the last year but the menu has not only changed but the quality has slipped. We did not enjoy our experience and will never come back. A shame...
Very creative Japanese food paired with good selection of beers or sake. Focus on seasonal specialities and updated classics. Tasting menu out of this world and 4 course chefs menu excellent for the younger set. Large selection of small plates if your focus is sampling the sake flights. We are regulars and never disappointed .
Very spicy, but really delicious. Not a lot of vegetarian options, although the kitchen was able to make some of the dishes without meet. Service was really friendly.
We went Wasan on mother's day weekend. I guess the kitchen was way too busy that night. It took way long time.
The omakase menu we had was six courses for only $60. Everything was beautifully prepared and delicious. This was my first visit to Wasan, but certainly won't be my last!
Interesting concepts but didn't deliver in execution. I didn't have high expectations for such low priced uni, but it wasnt even fresh. Sashimi Bowl was decently and good value. Friend's cod wasn't great. Appetizers were okay, but nothing to write home about.
Great vibe, great service, and solid food. We will be coming back.
Great food, great ingredients, very creative, and elegant presentation.
Went for all the uni on the menu and everything was amazing. Definitely going to try and make it a regular dinner spot.
a good combination of Japanese food and a tapas bar. very good and interesting small dishes. we enjoyed each one
Went to Wasan this past weekend. Had never heard of it, so went in with no real impression in mind. The spot is cool and cozy. We were seated right away, waitstaff was super friendly. Love their sake menu, which includes explanations so you find the exact taste you're looking for. Foie Gras sushi was sinfully good as was the uni lovers sushi. Sashimi was fresh and delicious. We had a wonderful time. Would go back.
Just love their food. No matter what I order there, it's great.
I never write reviews. This place requires one. It's just SO GOOD!!! I was shocked that it wasn't packed when we arrived. Quality of fish was A+++. If you're an uni fan-- GO HERE. Get the "uni lover" and the uni with wagyu sushi. I could have ordered the whole menu. It was all so great!!!
Great food and drink selections! This is a place for truly Japanese food fanatics. Don't expect basic sushi platters or tempura dishes - their menu is above that level. My only concern is that the portions are small to share - so if going in a group, order two plates of the same food. They have incredible sake selections!
The food was amazing and the sake list was unbelievable. Will definitely go back.
Uni Lover, foie gras sushi, pumpkin soup, and wagyu on stone grill are amazing, as is the pecan ice cream. The almond chicken was also good, but not super interesting. The beef casserole and salmon chirashi were extremely mediocre in comparison to the other food which was so good.
This was my second time dining there. The first time was much better. It seemed not many people working there; services were so slow. Sorry but I won't go there any more.
This is beautiful and delicious Japanese food. The open salmon roll is out of this world. The grilled vegetables are delectable. We loved everything we tasted. Our sake was fantastic. Our server was very polite and friendly. He had us taste a couple of sakes and we picked our favorite. We will definitely go back to Wasan.
Wasan is a place to visit regularly. The seasonal menu changes are always interesting, the produce excellent. Each time I go with a friend who has not eaten there before he/she has a wonderful, relaxed evening and finds the food delicious. Very good range of dishes from the pickles to the wagyu via shellfish and whitefish in great combinations, sauces and dressings excellent. Portions exactly right. Pricing absolutely correct. Sake list very good indeed. I don't like background music but the jazz is as cool as it gets.(at llow volume). Service a pleasure, could not be more helpful and aware.
As my Grandfather once told me about looking for a good restaurant while on the road, look for a diner that has a lot of parked trucks in the lot.
The ratio of of asian natives at Wasan proves his point.
Very good food, extensive sake list and wonderful pairing. A lot of their food is handmade. They have an array of pickled veggies that were delicious. They were also offering a "Tasting" that looked excellent for $55 but alas we had eaten a very late lunch and passed.
When you order sake, they let you choose your own cup. Very personal touch.
Definitely going back. We had a really great time and felt genuinely welcomed.
Highly recommend the uni on chicharron and shrimp wrapped in fried soba noodle. The bottles of sake are a little expensive but they are high quality and there is a varied selection. A couple of carafes sufficed for a party of two. Make a reservation if you want to go on the weekend.
Love the Foie Gras sushi! perfect combination of asian and western material!
Almost everything on the menu is good! (except Herring Roe, but this is my personal preference :P)
intimate ambience, not to loud.
everything was so delicious, so creative and friendly service. if you want to learn about sake, this is a great place to do so. they have flight sampling (2 oz. glasses) and excellent descriptions of each one. plus, its in a super cute glass so just loved everything about it.
Nice food, Nice sake and Nice service. I really recommend WASAN!
My husband and I have dinner in Wasan with another couple. We have the uni lovers and the chef special meal, together with a bottle of Wasan sake. The food is great and the service is attentive . This is a peaceful Tuesday evening. However, once another noisy group came into the restaurant, the whole atmosphere changed and noise level is bad. We understand this is a small restaurant but some patrons are not considerate as they should be. Overall we would recommend Wasan to friends and would return soon.
The menu intrigued us to try Wasan for dinner, especially the monthly tasting menu. For a very modest $55, each person receives 4 courses (minus the amuse). The first two are slightly smaller, but the main and entree are well portioned to fill you. The dessert tops it off with sweet delicate choices. The choices on the tasting menu are also unique from the usual ala cart menu.
The food was delicious and the ambiance of a quiet NYC night is unmistakable.
