Great service. Friendly. Attention to detail. Great selections. Good food preparation. Truly French. Nearby. We will be back. We will tell our friends to go as well.
From the complimentary soup to the complimentary aperitifs and all the wonderful food in between while eyeing the vineyard pastures it was a lovely time.
Good food, although a bit pricey. We liked the complimentary amuse-bouche and dessert wine!
This is a great happy bistro, out in the country, filled with locals, fit for foodies as well as the ordinary folk among us. We will definitely return.
One of the best meals we've had since we moved here 10 years ago. Went for restaurant week. Party of 4--we all loved it and will be back. Even for special menu--wonderful treatment, extra amuse bouche and shot of after dinner drink. They have special $39.00 3-course meals for a few days each month...and they sent us a 10% off coupon. For SoCo, on the pricier end (if you're from S.F. or other large city you might think it a little more moderate). Very quaint building (former large chicken coop? but nice inside)--long and narrow...so no need to wear your fanciest duds. Fine dining in a casual atmosphere. Very friendly. [My entree was petrale sole on bed of cabbage and potatoes with a thin lemony cream sauce. I did everything but pick up the bowl and drink out of it -- they provided a spoon when they served it.]

We have eaten here several times, during different seasons and with different groups of people. The food and the service have always been excellent. We enjoy our dinners and will continue to return.
Just plain outstanding ! Be sure to go !!!
Everything is 5 start especially the service !!!
Food was delicious, service very attentive, excellent place!
This was my first time at Walter Hansel’s Wine Bar, and it was marvelous experience. The food was just exquisite. Everything was prepared with great care, the combination of flavors and proportions of seasoning were wonderful.
This is a pricey restaurant, but not unusually so for Sonoma County. It’s very worthwhile for a special treat.
Haven’t visited this location since ZAZU days.
The cheese board selection was outstanding. We ordered off the Restaurant Week menu and were satisfied with our choices, the fish was excellent, my husband couldn’t stop eating the complimentary bread. The wine menu had a little bit of everything but wasn’t overwhelming at the same time, so any decision you made regarding wine pleased all taste buds.
We will be back!
Went there for dinner during restaurant week. We loved the pan-seared petrale sole! It was the best restaurant entree we have had in quite awhile. Salad was very good; dessert was ok. The service was outstanding. It's a fun place to dine. The only knock on the restaurant is the noise level, which can be pretty loud when the place is full. All said, we can hardly wait for our next dinner there.
This was my second time there and they exceeded my expectations again! The food is amazing, the service is on point, it's such a great place. I recommend it all the time and can't wait to go back.
A must stop! Lively roadside restaurant with cozy ambiance and friendly staff that makes you feel right at home. The food was incredible, thoughtful in presentation, great portion size, and really fantastic overall. . .definitely working hard in the kitchen to hit every note! Enjoyed being able to order Walter Hansel wines and having waitstaff be knowledgeable on them. And they have a nice selection of local wines if interested in branching out. Loved my first dining experience here and will definitely be back.
Our waiter (can't remember his name) was attentive and knowledgeable. The other servers bringing food were also focused on the dishes and the whole place seemed to really care about the presentation and quality of the cuisine. The waiter selected 2 different chardonnays and both were a hit. The water drawn from the tap had a slight sulfur odor and ordinarily, we would have drank without issue but were inclined to purchase bottled water. The extra mile the waiter did was to bring a tasting of dessert wine to go with our dessert. It was lovely.
Excellent food, service, and wine by the glass selections.
Have been to this restaurant many times and it has always been good to excellent. But this time it was a disappointment because the trout was buried in WAY too much butter. The salad and dessert on the other hand were good.
We are starting to be regulars at this fun bistro--great food, wine, and super service keep us returning. Bustling full house on a rainy Friday night. This time my wife loved the rich chicken cordon bleu, and I opted for a special-- tender skirt steak served with perfect fries. (I usually get the exquisite duck, which thankfully avoids any overly sweet sauce!) Our tablemates enjoyed a sole special, and helped us explore the superb and very, very reasonably priced Hansel wines on the menu. The wine list is good, but do try the Hansel, especially some of their elegant pinots go nicely with steak and that duck dish. Desserts and a courtesy flight of dessert wines ended our very mellow evening in this warm, friendly spot in wine country.
We just moved into the area two weeks ago. We’ve already been to eat here twice! Yum!
Always great food and impeccable service. The reason we love this place is the quality of service that is so lacking In Sonoma County
Really liked the Walter Hansel Pinot! The Veal special was delicious. The Beef Bourguignon was delicious with a smokey flavor to the beef. The Duck Gizzard salad was good but very filling which made it hard to rally enjoy our entrees do we took a to go box home.
Our waiter, Matthew, was fantastic! The food and the service was above expectations.
What a delightful bistro out in the vineyards. Don't know why Walter Hansel's hasn't gotten broader acclamation. Updated versions of French cuisine, very high quality produce...even to the point of imported French butter. The fois gras was superb, as good as you'll find in the Dordogne....the sea bass fabulous.
We have passed this place on Guernville Rd. several times and had dined there when it was Zazu but this was our first experience eating here. It was on Valentine's Day so the place was packed. Despite how busy they were, our waiter could not have been more attentive without being intrusive. The service was great and our waiter informed and witty. The menu was French/California. My wife had the crab/shellfish risotto and I had the Coquilles St-Jacques. Both were excellent. As were the oysters, soup and salad we had prior to the main. For dessert my wife, who is gluten intolerant, had the flourless cake and was glad the restaurant had plenty of gluten free options. For dessert I had the assiette de fromages. The cheese selection was surprisingly varied and superb. All-in-all we were pleasantly surprised and pleased. We will be back!
The food and service were both wonderful. The only issue we had with the ambience was that our table was right by the door and it was a very cold night. Every time the door open we would get a big gust of cold air. Other than that we all loved it!
Sometimes we forget how wonderful this restaurant is. Did not let us down. Service and food outstanding
The food was just perfect. Each dish was outstanding and the flights of both their white and red wines complimented the flavors.
The staff are friendly and professional, and the food is always well-prepared and delicious. It's a great French bistro type of restaurant with several traditional dishes and always something new to try.
Amazing food, even better service, and overall dining experience is unique and authentic!
First time visit. Heard wonderful things. Was not disappointed. Food and service were excellent. Noise level was on the loud side. Made it hard to talk. Would definitely visit again.
My favorite place for dinner! Food is absolutely delicious, and service always outstanding. I always am made to feel welcome when I arrive.
Always great food and wonderful service love this place!!!
Food was good, wine was good, I like going there.
We had a surprisingly great time at dinner. The Shigoku oysters were fresh and plump, the entrees (duck breast and rack of lamb) were technically perfect, but the asparagus soup and cheese board were super winners! Even though there were only 3 cheeses on the menu/board, they were perfect for a small board. The wine flights were very good value at $20 for 3 pours. Unfortunately we didn't love any of the chardonnays or pinots enough to commit to a bottle of it. Our server, Kristina, was always attentive and efficient and made really good suggestions.
Great place to eat! Food is fabulous and the staff is amazing. We love eating at Walter Hansel Bistro!
Fantastic food, great service with a local ambiance!
My wife and I were looking for a special New Years Eve dining experience. We’ve had several good meals there and decided to try it for NYE.
We were seated at a small two-top that appeared to be a 2’x 2’ chunk of plywood under the tablecloth and attached to a wobbly base that tilted back and forth each time it was touched. It appeared to be scrunched in to provide additional temporary seating.
The Prix fixe menu looked very appealing albeit heavy on the prix end of the page at $95 per person.
The food began to trickle out, a delicious bisque served in a small shot glass. The very competent wait staff was reduced to a catering crew, slowly delivering the next course another sumptuous soup followed 10 minutes later. A bite sized delectable crab on pastry shell teased the entree of micro slices of Filet Mignon with Brussels sprouts. Once again, excellently prepared but extremely small.
At that point the gentleman at the next table, six inches from my elbow, said to his dining partner “we’re going to need to stop at Jack-in-the-Box on the way home.
Th balance of our meal. Dribbled out, great food in tiny servings and capped with a somewhat speedier service of the billing.
The bottom line was a total bill of $266 for two which included one glass of wine and a plastic liter of sparkling water and yet still hungry. This would have to be considered a poor value.
Enjoyed an incredibly delicious 5-course meal to close out 2017. Tomato Bisque, Pumpkin puree, filet mignon, petrale sole, flourless chocolate cake, all paired with a nice bottle of WH 2014 North Slope Pinot noir. Yum!
Prix fixe menu @ $85 + tax and 20% billed tip
Great service, great ambiance, and great food! Order the Beef Bourguignon. It was so incredibly delicious.
Our first visit and we came away pleased. Good wait staff. Personable, attentive, and professional. Seated promptly and offered something to drink while we perused the menu. Warm bread and butter with sea salt brought to us. Bread was excellent and the butter was slightly softened (other restaurants should take note). We ordered lobster bisque and ceasar salad to go with our entrees. Both were good. Our entrees were Alaskan Halibut and Alaskan salmon. Both were delicious. We did not order dessert, as the meal was filling. When bringing the check our waitress noted that it was our anniversary and offered us comp desserts. I declined, but my wife was given a dessert to take home and have later. A nice gesture
