Contemporary American
Fishing pub meets restaurant - that is the ingenious idea behind the Walrus and the Carpenter. This bustling neighborhood restaurant specializes in oysters and other seafood dishes. Using nothing but the freshest ingredients, Chef Breckin VanRaalte creates seasonal food. The Walrus and the Carpenter also serves wine, smart cocktails, beer and cider. It makes an ideal after-hours hangout spot. Enjoy some fried oysters with a cold beer, surrounded by cozy rustic furnishings. If you prefer an alternative to seafood, look no further than the steak tartare, which comes with thinly sliced rye toast and egg yolk. Launched in 2010 to rave reviews, The Walrus and the Carpenter is open Wednesday through Sunday between 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.

The oysters were good- everything else was way too salty. The service was mediocre at best. Too expensive for this place not to get basic things right.

I did it, I finally went. There I don't have to go again. Don't get me wrong the oysters were great... but this is Seattle... calm down your $4/each prices. I should spend $200 and then still have to get a burger afterward.
I will not be going back and the location (being in a back parking lot alley) I will not be recommending to visitors. sorry but not sorry.

I throughly enjoyed the food and drinks here. The staff are very conscious, the restaurant itself is beautiful, and the environment is relaxing. My one complaint was our server, he was very rude and made the dining experience uncomfortable. He was also blatantly sexist, treating my sisters and myself with a sense of disdain while cracking jokes with my brother and calling him boss the whole time. I would definitely try this place again, their cocktails were outstanding and their food was fun and unique.

The outdoor covered seating was delightful and romantic. Ambiance was spot on. There was plenty of spacing between other diners. Selection of oysters on the 1/2 shell was good and the 4 that I picked were mild and delicious. The plates are small, so if you are hungry you will need to order many plates. We tried the scallops with nettle salsa verde, the scallops were perfect. The nettle salsa verde was simply minced nettle with oil and the oil was the flavor that was dominant and overbearing. We also had the fried oysters. The oysters were cooked perfectly. The cornmeal breading was off putting with larger granules and lack of flavor. Lastly we had the bread with cow cheese & peppered honey and bread with goat cheese and cherry jam. The cheese combinations were spot on with the topping.

Amazing food, great service! The roasted carrots were a little weird, but the oysters, sea wolf bread & butter, and salmon were AMAZING.

My FAVORITE restaurant in Seattle! The ambiance and food are amazing. Nice and cozy with perfect amount of romance. The fresh oysters are a must but I have to say my favorite dish this time around was the oyster pan roast, you could run a rubber tire through that sauce!! Would highly recommend and will of course be back!

Great food and the outdoor seating during the pandemic is a great option. Our 3 person party had enough time to enjoy the great food and drinks before we had to leave.

I've eaten here 4 times and always love the food. It's about as Northwest as you can get with spot prawn crudo, oysters, miner lettuce, etc. It's on the pricey side, so some may question the calories to dollars ratio. For me, it's an occasional treat. The space is attractive and not stuffy. One of Seattle's best and deserving of its great reputation!

We sat at our table for almost 15 minutes before anyone acknowledged us. The raw oysters were delicious, but the other three food items we ordered were subpar.

I'd go back for the oysters, but the service was awful.

Walrus & Carpenter has done a fantastic job of pivoting to serve people safely during the pandemic. It's comfortable and still feels casually upscale -- just a perfect setting to enjoy their amazing food and drinks!

It is very good but pricey. Oysters used to be half priced and happy hour from four until five. Now it’s one dollar off during happy hour so the oysters were three dollars apiece. The tent set up for Covid quarantine is the best I have seen. Very spacious and very private. The oysters are superb. I don’t know of a place with a better variety of fresher oysters. I formerly loved the steak tartare. I found not special this last time and would not order it again.

I love the space, it is fun and the servers are very attentive. All the dishes are made with exquisite quality ingredients. The oysters are always the start to me, however coconut cake I had for desert was great. My grilled sardines were OK. Great selection of drinks, from wines to cocktails- I would definitely go back!

Service was amazing, food was exceptional - best oysters ever! - ambience was beautiful. This is the second time I have been here, first time was 10 years ago. I won’t wait 10 years in between this time. Also Covid protocol was tight and I felt safe and thrilled to be eating out at such a fine Seattle establishment. I’d give it more than 5 stars if I could! You won’t be disappointed!
