The restaurant mixes an early 20th century Austrian minimalist setting with works by contemporary artists, such as Julian Schnabel and Albert Oehlen. Gutenbrunner’s innovative menu, which showcases different variations of traditional Viennese and Contemporary, European Cuisine, has earned a coveted Michelin star rating.

Loved it. First time, not the last.
We had a memorable and delicious meal. The waiter and sommelier were happy to answer questions and explain the food and the wine. We got the four course menu with the wine pairing. The sommelier was hapy to spend time describing the wines and also wrote out the list for us. I am already looking forward to going there again.
Interesting menu, excellent wine list and truly great service
This was our first return to Wallse since leaving the West Village many years ago. It was not as good as we remembered, and the food was quite disappointing. At best, some of the dishes might be described as just good, and all of the flavors seemed muted. The foie gras torchon had little impact, the venison ragout was dried out, and the lamb had little flavor. Wallse did not live up to its reputation or its Michelin star. The restaurant has a mildly upscale feel, the dining room is attractive and the service is very good. There is a very extensive list of Austrian wines, which are priced high, but not out of reach. We did not really like the $95 bottle of riesling recommended to us by the sommelier with a long dissertation.
The five course tasting menu was a bit different than advertised on their site, but the substitution for the soup course I believe couldn't have been better. The elevated Austrian fare was well executed, brought solid flavors, and showcased a wide range of culinary talent. To say this was the best wiener schnitzel I have had is an understatement. The atmosphere was relaxed, and the service staff were attentive.
Fantastic spot. Haven’t been in a while but it’s a terrific restaurant. The cooking was subtle, wine was fantastic. A 2007 Gruner. Service impeccable and low noise. An adult restaurant.
Outstanding. Excellent service, wonderful food and a cozy setting.
Very attentive, but not overbearing staff. Food was amazing. Between the two of us, we got different things for three courses each. All of the food was divine. Would recommend over and over. Who knew Austrian food could be this complex and decadent? Ten stars to Wallsé, if I could.
Wallse is located on a picturesque West Village corner, and decorated nicely inside.
The service was attentive and polite. The food, however, was underwhelming. Had it been delicious it would be worth the price, but it was really nothing too special and then expensive on top of that. If you're looking for a fine-dining experience, I would check elsewhere.
We love Wallse and come here to celebrate all our special occasions!
Very approachable menu.
Mainstream, solid selection.
Wonderful meal overall. The somelier in particular really knew his Austrian wines. Everyone was pleased from vegetarians to meat eaters. We will be back
ONE OF MY FAVORITE AND BEST RESTAURANTS IN NEW YORK.
Great neighborhood spot with fab food and one heck of a wine program.
This was my first visit to Wallse and I will certainly be going back. In a nutshell - excellent food, fresh, well prepared, presented well, excellent flavor, cooked perfectly. The craft cocktails are tasty and present well and the wine and beer is very good.
They also offer a fixed course menu so ordering a 2, 3 or 4 course meal is very easy - super convenient.
Tables are far enough apart that you can easily have a conversation with your own table and hear very well without straining.
We thought some of the pricing was a bit high (wines were expensive by the glass) but it was a small complaint in an otherwise super experience.
So much posturing for bland food and fetiche austrian wines - who cares?
Fantastic evening on the occasion of a birthday celebration. Delicious food and superb Austrian wine list. Outstanding service in a relaxed and quiet ambiance.
We go to Wallse about 2 times a year usually for a special occasion. Years ago, I thought the prices were very high so we limited our visits. Now, so many inferior restaurants are just as pricey that Wallse is a terrific place to dine more frequently. It is difficult to find Austrian cuisine in New York so Wallse is a treat.
One of the best restaurants I've been to in many years. Fantastic food and service, and an very interesting menu. So quiet and calm, I almost forgot I was in NYC.
Outstanding food as always.
New York has already a lot to offer, however true Austrian (and southern German) kitchen is hard to find. Wallsé is hitting this spot. Very nice atmosphere, paired with excellent food, wine and staff. We will come again!
Excellent food, friendly staff, and good ambiance. Great place to talk.
Such a special and delicious place! A longtime favorite!
One of our favorite places in NYC. True Austrian food and drink. Knowledgeable and accommodating staff. Can’t wait to go back for another schnitzel.
Fantastic meal in this one Michelin star gem that features authentic Austrian cuisine in a wonderful setting. Chef Kurt Gutenbrunner does a brilliant job of marrying ingredients in the most creative of ways and his staff are outstanding in every way. Benjamin, who is from Austria took us on a journey through his country during the meal, telling us delightful stories of his country’s culture and food. The meal was a complete success. We started with Arctic Char then moved to rabbit spatzle and chanterelle goulash for a trip into Austria itself. Both were beyond delicious and worked well together. Then, we opted for halibut and veal wiener schnitzel. The later was served with lingon berries. For dessert, we had a pear strudel and a salzburger nockerl which was a soufflé. All were incredibly good. Mary also had a wonderful wine pairing of her four dishes with all Austrian wines. In the end, visit this terrific restaurant next time you visit the city.
Wallsé has become one of my favorite restaurants in New York. The food, service, and decor are all excellent. The decor is classy and cozy at the same time, the service was impeccable and thoughtful, the food sophisticated but filling. We plan to make it our special occasion restaurant.
Absolutely spectacular food and service. The Austrian wine list is particularly delectable! Arguably one of our favorite NYC experiences for people who dine out a lot. Kudos to the chef and staff.
Excellent meal, great service. It’s on my favorite list for NY now.
Disappointing. Big lack of flavors. The signature dish was...vapid. Service was still very good.
The food and ambiance was good as always. We were a bit surprised at how expensive it wound up to be, with individual glasses of wine and desserts very pricey. Dinner for four was in excess of $500 which included four glasses of wine and two desserts, two courses per person.
Unless you are a friend of the management, give this haughty and expensive place a pass.
We were left standing in the doorway for half an hour
Nowhere to sit
No drink offered
Our table had been ‘overbooked’
We were told it would be half an hour
After half an hour,
A large party arrived, was warmly greeted and seated right in front of us
BTW, we were booked, confirmed and reconfirmed for a family Birthday
Excellent experience. The price fixe menu is appropriately flexible with top notch presentation, and the wine choices are a treat for those looking for the very best range of gruner veltliner.
Wallse is consistently great. Excellent food, wine, and service in a relaxed but elegant surrounding.
It’s always good...ALWAYS. Wallse never disappoints the service is friendly without being overbearing. The drinks are expertly crafted, make sure to peruse the cocktail menu, and the food is exceptional, the schnitzel, the duck, the spatzle there isn’t a bad option. Choose four courses, it’s worth it. The space and the art are wonderful and the overall experience can be capped off with a mozartkugel which will be remembered for quite a while.
We went for our anniversary and had a great time. The food was delicious, service was impeccable and the wine was amazing.
tasting menu was great, spaetzle overcooked, everything else was perfect
Awesome menu also portions are large. Ambience is great and bar ample
Wonderful food . The spatzle with rabbit is divine! We ate at the bar and service was great. She recommended a wondering dry reisling wine.
