Waldhaus Restaurant - Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel
Discover your inner foodie, or as our German friends like to say your inner feinschmecker, at our "house in the woods;" The Waldhaus. This hidden Alpine delight is nestled in the woods above the Bow and Spray Rivers, and has everything you could want from a Bavarian haven.
German-inspired alpine cuisine such as divine schnitzel and cheesy fondue are just waiting to be devoured in an atmosphere reminiscent of a rustic hunting cottage. With a large fireplace and a wine cabinet, we promise to set the tone for a memorable dining experience at our "House in the Forest."

It was very good overall. Good cheese and dessert fondue.
First day back open after Covid closure.
Food and staff didn’t miss a beat.
This is our third experience at the Waldhaus and as always we had an excellent time and enjoyed the incredible food (salad, cheese fondue, chicken schnitzel) that is offered at this establishment. We were pleased to have Mark as our waiter again; his kind demeanour and spot on wine recommendation always add to the enjoyment of the evening. If you can visit just one restaurant during a trip to Banff, I highly recommend an evening at the Waldhaus Restaurant.
Our first Waldhaus experience was 15 years ago. We absolutely loved it. This time we were disappointed. Although our server was indeed most pleasant and attentive, and the fire was lovely, when we checked in - an hour before the reservation apparently (Texas time versus Banff time) - I felt chastised and dismissed. But we did sit by the fire! Food was okay - lot of confusion about the relationship between the Fairmont and the Waldhaus - billed on the hotel website and one of their restaurants - but we could not transfer (or take with us) our favorite Scotch highballs from the hotel down to the restaurant and the Waldhaus does not have a wide selection of cocktails. Anyway - sadly it wasn't the same experience and we won't go there again.
The Waldhaus had excellent atmosphere, pictures on the walls were great. Food was very good but pricey. It is a limited menu. The menu had only one vegetarian selection and it contained mushrooms- which the vegetarian in our party didn’t like but ordered it anyway-said it was good. Overall, we had a really nice time and would recommend this restaurant.
Great food. Grew up in Germany and love the schnitzel
Great views, amazing ambience, quality service. The food is very flavourful, however, the portions were a bit on the small side, especially considering the amount that you pay. Overall an great meal.
hostess and waiter were all very helpful food was amazing will come back again
We understand that the Waldhaus restaurant recently underwent a renovation.
I ordered the Schitzel which was dry and not very tasty. Thought the food was overpriced for what you get.
Being at a Fairmont property, you have certain expectations. There were cobwebs in the overhead light fixtures and the carpets were in desperate need of vacuuming.
As well, thought the Waldhaus was a German restaurant, but pretty sure the back of the dining chairs had the Swiss emblem on them.
Overall, a very average experience.
Did not like the menu changes from last year. Missed the trout and bradwurst.
Excellent food. Service was brilliant. Room and atmosphere was spot on. Food quite pricey but worth it as a nice treat. The restaurant is on the fairmont grounds so we expected it to be a little bit more pricey than the average restaurant. We had fondu and there was plenty of it and plenty of food choices to dip into the cheese.
Our Server, Julie, was phenomenal. She made the dining experience so much more amazing. Thank you Julie!!
Great food but it’s the atmosphere and service that really stand out! A bit pricey but worth it.
We truly enjoyed a wonderful evening - fondue always lends itself to good dinner conversation! A warm, cozy and upscale atmosphere and great service. We love coming here.
It's rare that I find a German-style restaurant to be a disappointment. The new and now limited menu was a disappointment, especially after viewing the website which still listed the older menu - you know, the one that actually offers wursts at a German restaurant. The ambiance and the waitstaff were great. The menu was lacking and the food we did order was not particularly good. The Wienerschnitzel was dry and lifeless. The fondue appetizer was good although heavy on the bread when we hoped for more pickled veggies. If it not been for the good beverage selection, ambiance, warmth of what sadly is the only real working wood fireplace in all of Banff Hot Springs, I would not recommend this restaurant. You can get a similar meal at the Walliser Stube in Lake Louise which we did and it was much better.
Great food and fantastic service!
A great experience all around. Looking forward to a return visit!
Service, food and atmosphere were great. We loved the fondue and wienerschnitzel! Even the walk from the main part of the hotel to the restaurant was gorgeously alpine (shuttle available also).
Very much enjoyed the authentic Swiss dining experience.
I took my boyfriend here for his birthday. Finding parking was horrible. Make sure to arrive extra early to figure out the whole parking situation as the parking described on the app was not valid due to the ice on the stairs. Once at the restaurant, it was a lovely venue, the food was fantastic however the only help our waiter offered us was choosing a wine and cheese selection. He was very talkative towards myself however didn’t seem to give my boyfriend the time of day. He barely visited our table and when finished our wine, we were not offered more. In fact, the glass was removed from the table and as he took it, we had to stop him to ask for more. Upon leaving the restaurant, we were graciously helped by another staff member with calling a shuttle which helped turn our sour experience around. If you go to this restaurant, and your waiter is Gary, I definitely recommend switching tables.
Raclette appetizer was good, however the schnitzel was recommended as most popular and we both got it. Unfortunately it was disappointing and nothing memorable other than the 1 hour long wait for it to show up. Not worth the time and price. Everyone else around got the fondue.
Fantastic food and wonderful service. Staff very helpful with menu suggestions. Fondue was great.
Our server (Julie) was excellent... the chicken breast was cooked to perfection... the jaeger schnitzel with mushroom gravy very good. Had a nice table right by the wood burning fireplace, very festive.
Majestic setting with classic Northern European cuisine. A true gem in the park worth revisiting over and over.
Went in for fondue as I heard this was the specialty. It was so bland and flavourless, even the truffle fondue was a major letdown. The only saving grace was the pork belly and outstanding service. I hate to leave a bad review but try some creative ingredients for the fondue, up your charcuterie game and go fine some salt! I spent 200 here and then went to Grape at the Banff Springs hotel to satisfy my palate and get that taste out of my mouth.
Appetizers were solid; main course over-cooked. Pricey for dated environment. Service was excellent though!
Service was top-notch all around! Our food came out very quickly and was excellent. Beautifully presented and delicious. The chocolate fondue to finish was a special treat! Shuttle service to and from the Banff Springs lobby was a great option, but one can also choose to walk to and from if conditions are good. Would recommend!
Great place - food was wonderful - service extremely friendly - very cozy - cheese fondue w truffles was amazing!
Horrible overpriced food with poor service. If I am paying that much I expect a whole lot more. Way better food/service in town at other restaurants. All of the hotel restaurants that I went to had very poor food quality... zero taste.
Amazing Authentic Bavarian meal. Service was attentive and wonderful. Great ambiance.
If you visit the pub or dining area you will not be disappointed. The food is fantastic, especially the Jaeger Schnitzel and the Truffle Cheese Fondue! Great host, servers and bartenders!
Cozy vibe with great service and amazing fondue! Definitely won’t disappoint.
A hidden gem located in the forest behind the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel. The atmosphere in the restaurant is enhanced by a real wood burning fireplace. Food quality and variety is outstanding. Great selection of beer, wines, and specialty cocktails. One of the best restaurants in Banff!
I loved the fondue!!! Definitely I’ll go back.
Great dining experience. Sad they took the meat fondue off the menu.
Excellent! Pricey, but it is a Fairmont restaurant. Loved the cheese fondue. Yum!
Delicious German food - attentive staff- great authentic European feel and convenient shuttle to and from hotel
Food was burned. Guest from out of country who now think schnitzel us served like that! Server was less than interested in our experience.
