Wai'Olu Ocean Cuisine Ratings and Reviews
This is a nice place to bring out-of-town guests for easy parking, beautiful scenery, music not too loud and fireworks display on Fri night. We both enjoyed our meals and although not many vegan options, the one I had was tasty and fulfilling.
The one complaint I have is that the waiter hardly stopped by to see how we were doing. My friend had ordered crab for the first time and didn't realize how difficult they are to eat. When we finally got the waiters attention, he brought out scissors. My friend was still struggling for a long time. We couldn't find the waiter so my friend told the receptionist. They were very generous in telling him that they won't bill him for that and then quickly walked away. I assumed they walked away to get him a menu so that he can actually order something that he can eat. No one showed up anymore so I got up and asked for a menu. I would think that any restaurant would want their customers to leave full and happy.
That was the only negative experience. He enjoyed his meal after that and we even went back the next day for lunch and had a pleasant experience.
Ate mid-afternoon. Very quiet - very few people - pleasant after hustle and bustle of Waikiki beach front. Distant ocean view from table. Server was knowledgeable and friendly. Terrific Mai-Tai! Palm heart salad very good, small expensive portion of sashimi.
On vacation here in Hawaii and wanted to experience delicious food and great ambience, Wai’olu has both! We were floored by the great view of Waikiki, you can see the waves 🌊 breaking on the beach even in the dark! Our waiter was happy to snap us a few pictures to commemorate the visit! He also helped with Our menu choices. The cocktails were perfection as was the sushi 🍣 The Trump Tower was absolutely beautiful and we enjoyed the entire experience! We ate at several outstanding Waikiki Restaurant during our vacation but this was the most beautiful restaurant experience of our vacation!

For most patrons, Wai'olu Ocean View Lounge is the perfect locale for Happy Hour drinks and appetizers...and of course the million dollar ocean views. With Fort DeRussy as its neighbor, there are no buildings to block the ocean views. But my wife and I may have un-raveled another gem for this establishment...Having lunch here on a Saturday, without the crowds and still enjoying the ocean views without the sun shining directly at you.
My wife ordered the Wai'olu, which is a Chicken Katsu entree that comes with steamed rice, greens salad and a scoop of locally made Ice Cream. I had the Local-Moco, which is a spin-off of the local plate lunch favorite, Loco-Moco. A Hamburger Steak on the bottom, Sunny Side Up egg on top and covered with a demi glaze sauce. This entree also, came with a scoop of Ice Cream as well. For some, paying $34 for dishes easily found as plate lunches, may be hard to accept, but believe me, the quality and tastes of the food is 1st class all the way.
The service here matches the 5-Star service that the Trump properties are known for. On this day, the bartender Kelly greeted us at the podium and provided us with friendly conversation and professional service. On this day, we had the place to ourselves, for about a half-hour, until a trickle of lunch patrons came slowly strolling in. For non-hotel guests, there is complementary 4-hour valet parking available. My wife and I will be back soon and will definitely recommend this establishment to friends and family.
Fabulous dinner on a Friday evening to see the Hilton fireworks. We booked a 7:15 reservation and were there in plenty of time for the show. Mai tai's were excellent as was the food. Great sushi, lamb chops and spring rolls. Would definitely recommend.
I brought my girlfriend here to try the food and watch the fireworks show from the Hilton Hawaiian. Everything was outstanding! The view of the ocean and skyline at sunset was so beautiful! Our server Jamie was the best! She provided recommendations, was very attentive and took great pictures! The food and drinks were nothing short of excellent.
Our hostess and waitress was wonderful. She was gracious and very helpful. We enjoyed our drinks and the small plates we ordered. I did not like I was supporting a Trump property. The view of downtown was beautiful, but there was no view of the ocean as the name suggests.
We went there for the first time to celebrate Mother's Day dinner--very relaxing as there weren't many kids. It's an open patio so it was fairly cool, but the night skyline was beautiful. The ocean is a bit far away but there. This is more of a gastropub, but we were satisfied with the selections.
Commendable dishes with beautiful presentation; delicious and looked good, too. Perfect place to have good time and to entertain friends. Would have given 5 star, but the service was not quite up to my expectation because I almost had to ask, every time, to have my ice tea refill. Perhaps, too few waiters to handle/serve too many tables. Lastly, I was a little disappointed with my booth table; watched the singer's back all night, not the way to entertain friends who were first time there.
Told what time to leave!!! Then told an %18 tip was mandatory on our bill!!! Details: We arrived promptly at 5 for our reservation. As they sat our party of 4, the hostess made a point of telling us that they were very busy, had another party that had reservations after us and that we could stay two hours and THAT WAS IT. I was speechless. We are residents, and have brought friends to this bar and been guests of other friends there on many occasions, enjoyed many drinks and menu items, tipped well, and left happy. We had never been treated that way before! Nothing about our dress (casual evening clothes and dress shoes) or demeanor should have raised any concerns that we would be anything but good customers, so it couldn't have been "bad tip" profiling or anything like that.... There were seven tables around us that were empty when we sat down, FIVE of which remained empty, and were empty when we left..less than an hour and a half after we sat down. Oh, and when our bill was brought out after we ate and had three rounds of drinks, IT HAD A NOTE THAT THE (%18)TIP WAS ALREADY INCLUDED ON THE BILL. Are you kidding me?? Ridiculous. We really liked that place.... liked bringing visiting friends and family there.... but don't ever want to go back and be embarrassed like that again.
This place was lovely. I especially liked that we got to see the fireworks from where we sat. This place is on the expensive side though and sometimes it took a while to get our server's attention. But we did have excellent service. The only other downside is that while I was there, there was a couple who tried to sit at our table because I had 2 available seats. They didn't end up sitting there, but I believe the restaurant should have the outside seating roped off so that parties that are dining there are not disturbed by unwelcome visitors that are not apart of their party.
The view of Friday night fireworks was awesome! There were 6 kids under 6 and 6 adults in our party. We sat in casual comfy couches around a low table. Our service was 5 star. The waitress was 100% attentive to all our needs, orders, requests and even the broken glass a kid managed to bump. She made great food recommendations based on our party and her knowledge of their menu and drinks. I'd go back on a Friday night again! The Christmas was in the air with music and decorated trees in the background. Overall, the perfect finale spot with fireworks and all to our vacation in Oahu!
Delicious food! Sushi could have been better. We are connoisseurs! Virgin drinks overpriced! And
Mojito is premixed "beads". Prefer hand made. Lava flows were perfect. Fish of the day superb!
We didn't appreciate guests who were also dining standing up along the railing and blocking our view while we sat at L3. Delightful atmosphere. Comfy seats. We loved it so much that we got a gift certificate for our second visit!
My friends and I decided to try Waiolu for Restaurant Week. The view from the restaurant is spectacular, too bad we didn't come here on a Friday evening. The Hilton fireworks show would be in plain view. I might come back on July 4, just to see the Ala Moana fireworks show. It was rainy and windy the evening we came, and because Waiolu is outdoor dining, it was chilly. Bring a sweater if you come. We asked to be moved to another table. The menu is mostly tapas style, so we shared. We ordered one Restaurant Week prix fixe special (chili relleno, wagyu steak, creme brullee) $58, dynamite roll - $24, 6 oz. NY steak - $24, kalua pork spring rolls - $18, and steamed clams - 18. The food is average, nothing to rave about, portions are small. There is a one-man entertainer, and for us, the music was too loud. Thankfully, we were seated on the opposite end of the music. I felt sorry for those seated closer to the music. The service started attentively because we were the second table to arrive at 6p. As more people arrived, service went downhill. The first plates we used became sloshy with chili relleno sauce and refried beans, soy sauce, clam juice, so we asked for new plates. After 15 minutes or more, the server brought it. At the same time, I asked for a small bowl to scoop out the clam liquid to drink. Server brought a spoon. I explained I didn't want to double dip and wanted a bowl, not spoon. We ordered another drink. After a long while we thought it wasn't coming, and just when we were going to ask for the check, the drink arrived. There was one spring roll left and we asked for it to be wrapped. The server took it away to be wrapped and we never saw it again. We paid the bill and left. For the price we paid, $218 plus $40 tip, total $258, I expect more. Overall, Waiolu is good if you are looking for a spectacular view, loud music, and good drinks. If you are looking for good food coupled with good service, especially at the prices we paid, the value is not there.
