Wa Jeal Ratings and Reviews
Superb Sichuan food--which does NOT mean overly spicy. There were many non-spicy choices on their large menu, and one could get the degree of spiciness adjusted to your personal taste on all of the dishes which the menu identifies as spicy. Great seafood choices and overall a perfect restaurant for those who enjoy seriously good regional Chinese cooking. Not inexpensive, but good value.
We had a great lunch at Wa Jeal. Starting with scallion pancakes (yum) and ending with my chicken and broccoli (yum again) , the lunch deal (rice, main dish and soup) was very well priced and really delicious. The setting is wonderful--brick walls, and pretty decorations and the service excellent. Highly recommend!!
Truly the best Chinese food experience of my life! The shrimp toast was flavorful and the exterior flakey. The Shrimp Lo Mein and Spicy Shrimp with Peanuts were equally amazing dishes. Our waitress managed to make both dishes not hot, but kept all the flavors. Even the tea was fragrant and amazing. We will be back.
Tonight, on Saturday, January 28, 2017, the Chinese New Year, my wife, our friend and I had dinner there. Our friend wanted to have a fish dish and a vegetable dish. We had the crispy whole fish with pine nuts, which was delicious. We also had the baby eggplant with spicy garlic sauce. The food was excellent. My wife and I were too embarrassed to order another dish. Our dinner was not enough for three persons. I left there in hungry way. When we got home, I ate something more. My wife and I have ordered take-out many times from there. This was our first time to go to there. It was very crowded and noisy.
The food was a real disappointment. It seems they have one brown sauce and they add one or more chilis depending on the heat you like. It was all tasteless.
Very sad that there are so few really good Chinese restaurants left in NYC. As China Fun as closed (not the best but ok), we were looking for a replacement. We will not go back.
