This is a favorite Saint Paul dining destination since 1975. The Restaurant is housed in the turn-of-the-century Dacotah Building which lies in the heart of the historic Cathedral Hill District. W. A. Frost has incomparable ambiance and rare old world character. It boasts several grand wood-burning fireplaces, a charming old bar and the European-style garden patio and garden bar and lounge.
The new American cuisine at W. A. Frost is derived from an eclectic mix of ingredients meticulously sourced, with a very strong emphasis on local small farmers that use organic and sustainable practices. Minnesota's best wine list, best outdoor dining in the Twin Cities and the most romantic restaurant are just a few awards received.

Delicious. We splurged and got the chef's 6 course tasting. Worth it!! Expensive, but a fair price for being able to try a lot of variety in one meal. My favorite was the quail and the cheese plate.

The building is historic and beautiful. The bar staff attentive and friendly. The patio area makes a wonderful place for a romantic dinner, but the dining room is also lovely. There were a few good vegetarian options as well as tasting menus. Will be back!

Service was slow in spite of the fact that they weren't busy. I requested blue cheese dressing and they didn't have it so suggested the lemon vinaigrette and it was awful!

I was somewhat disappointed with the menu selection. There should be at least three more selections of entries with an offering of a chicken dish. The service was exceptional and the deserts were delicious. We most enjoyed the combination of the mini desserts. Overall we very much enjoyed our dinning experience and will come again.

We sat on the patio on Saturday for lunch. Would have preferred to have a regular lunch menu and not only brunch. Also, we thought the prices were quite high for what we received.

WA Frost is a long-time favorite. This visit was NOT a disappointment in any way. It's an absolutely beautiful place, in a historic building, with amazingly warm and inviting ambience; and a completely relaxed and intimate atmosphere. We were entertaining some out-of-town family, whom we had not seen in several years. Our table was perfect for conversation. Our server understood that we had some "catching up" to do, and was completely agreeable to our setting the pace, without making us feel rushed an any way.

As usual, the menu was amazing, and filled with unique and eclectic choices. Everyone was completely satisfied with their choices.

We have, in past visits, dined on the patio. That is a truly enjoyable and pleasant experience as well.

I would highly recommend WA Frost in every way. The entire staff is extremely accommodating, professional and knowledgeable; not to mention very friendly. Our evening was perfect! A truly memorable experience.

We enjoyed the food and ambiance so much that we went there four out of five nights on our vacation. The patio is especially lovely. Our servers were outstanding, informative and with a sense of humor.

We had a great anniversary meal, but the food took pretty long. The waiter did offer a free dessert as an apology which was delicious and a kind gesture. We were not in a rush for our dinner but if we had, I would have given a much worse review.

Service was not attentive. The bottle of wine took 20 minutes. We ordered 4 courses. The appetizer and small plate showed up together. The entree showed up 4 minutes later. The entree was completely cold before we finished the small plate. The waiter took it back and threw it in a microwave and said he was sorry he was so prompt with the food?????
I called ahead for a small cake with candle. They forgot and I had to ask twice in front of the birthday girl to even get it. We had to leave for a concert before we could eat it.
P.S. This was on a Monday night and it was not very busy.

We were put in a beautiful room with just us.... and a large (10+) group of people who were very loud. Everything was wonderful except for that. Also we ordered the small plates, for the most part they seem well priced but the beef carpaccio seemed a bit over-priced for the small amount of food that was served.

My husband and I went here on our two year anniversary and we had a great time. Service was quick, the time the waiter gave you between check ins was nice, and the patio area was a nice place to be in. As the sun goes down they turn on these string lights and the lighting is perfect for a garden dinner. A very enjoyable atmosphere. We spent 110 dollars for appetizer, dinners and drinks with tip included. We would recommend dining here.

We were early for our reservation by 10 or 15 minutes. The hostess told us to wait in the entry for ten minutes, then led us to our table, which was open and set. Why not allow us to sit down, serve the water and advise us that it would be a few minutes? We were being punished for being early it seems.

Had lunch with a couple of girl friends on the patio during a beautiful August afternoon. Easily the best patio in the Twin Cites. Food is always excellent and service is typically pretty good. Our server seemed to be in a hurry for us to leave as we would have had another glass of wine, but she brought the check and dashed before we could ask for anything else. Oh, well. Will still go back as I always enjoy this classic spot - both inside and out are a treat.

My husband and I dined out to celebrate his birthday. We have been here before, both inside and on the beautiful patio. We had a wonderful meal- the tasting menu. We started with a watermelon gazpacho, then seared scallops, fennel seed crusted porkloin, grilled quail, a cheese course and finally a cheese course. The servings are mere tastes and each one was delicious. You can also order a wine pairing to go with each course. The whole meal was served with just the right time in between courses. It was a great evening!

Invited my parents here for birthday. The service and food was excellent. The decor was cozy and relaxed, the ambiance lively and pleasant; a very relaxed atmosphere -- has an upscale, hole-in-the-wall feel, old world flair. The steak sirloin steak was perfect but a little on the pricey side. The free parking attached to the building is ideal and I like the large patio out back. It's easier to get tables around 5 -- later on, there seems to be people waiting. Overall, a great place for a special occasion with family. Highly recommended.

We rarely eat anywhere that is as expensive as WA Frost but we can honestly say "It was worth it!" We were fortunate to choose a beautiful day to eat on their lovely patio. Food and service-perfect. Tables spaced to feel private. Only one complaint — the only women's restroom required taking stairs to and from their basement. If there is another option, we couldn't find it.

We had to bale on the patio because of the weather but had a wonderful dining experience inside. Our waitress was attentive at just the right level- left us to chat, checked in just enough as we enjoyed an evening of slow food and good conversation.

We brought my mother-in-law for her birthday as a treat. The food was outstanding but the service was subpar. The server was more interested in the few tables around us (perhaps because we were a table of 3 women he assumed we wouldn't offer as much $?). He failed to even mention the specials. We only knew about them after he gave them to the table next to us (too late for us to order). Our drink was so strong that it was not drinkable. To his credit, he ultimately removed it from the bill but should have offered to fix/remake/replace in the first place.
The runner brought our food and I wanted to order more wine for the table but the server never reappeared to see how things were going. I had to flag him down to order more drinks! It was clear we received short shrift.
I was at the restaurant with just my wife a month prior and the service was IMPECCABLE so I was surprised. From our prior trip we didn't hesitate to make the 30 minute drive out for a great experience. However, after this trip, I would rethink it.

I placed reservations 3 weeks in advance for 10 people for brunch. While the table was ready for us and it was a great spot, the service was extremely slow. The food choices for brunch are average, and I was not particularly impressed with the overall experience. WA Frost has always been a St Paul classic, and it feels like they need to step up their game.

They are selling an old, elegant Saint Paul. They do ok at that, but don't go for the food; nothing very creative, and no real effort at presentation.

One exception: a reasonable selection of vegetarian options.

I used to like WA but not this time. Way too noisy in the (foyer?) Square Table too small for 3 people as your plates are huge and with so many of them and all the glassware, etc., way too crowded!! And where's the tablecloths? I googled restaurants with tablecloths! That would cut down on some of the noise, ya know. I was there to visit with school pals I hadn't seen in years and we couldn't hear each other at times. And it was too dark! We couldn't see to exchange addresses or even read our bills, and it was before 8:30 p.m. in July when we left. Disappointed, I am.

The hostess's pleasantness unfortunately was the highlight of the evening. Server wanted to be someplace else and though we were one of three tables service was exceptionally slow. Curried cauliflower hummus didn't deliver on promise...bland...roasted chicken and broccoli rabe over-cooked. Sauce very odd. Maybe burned? Perhaps the worst flavor combo I've ever had. The outside seating area teamed with very happy people and that was great see, perhaps they were overwhelmed which might explain poor service and food quality. Inside decor is beautiful. If you want to go here call for a table, do not book online, they explained they only give the prized tables to those that call. If you love the food experience over ambiance I would try a different restaurant.

We adored the patio at W.A. Frost. The food was delicious (bottle of cab, spinach/artichoke dip, green curry mussels, NY strip steak) and our waiter was very friendly and respectful when it came to giving us our privacy to talk. We really want to come back in the winter because the inside is so cozy.
